von Trapp Brewing Reviews

von Trapp Trosten Bier 3.6
Pours deep mahogany into a shaker. Pancake head with medium retention recedes leaving trailing sheets. Dark chocolate and caramel aromas. Dry with chocolate covered caramel upfront turning to mildly smoky roasted nuts and espresso in the medium length finish.

von Trapp Dunkel Lager 3.8
Dark tobacco brown color with off white head. Maple roast malty dunkel aroma. Wow, really good dunkel, so many dunkel a are just a malty flat mess. Certainly malty but clean without the yeast flavor of an ail that just not pair well with a malty beer like this. Biscuits, roast, hints of hob bitter, and a "clean" finish. Thanks dlovell2 for sharing.

von Trapp Dunkel Lager 3.1
Pours a deep brown with an off white head. Nose is slight roasted malt. Body is medium. Taste is under achieved roasted/dark malt with a slight - hardly detectable - sweetness that finishes dry with little bitterness. 12 oz bottle

von Trapp Dunkel Lager 3.2
Pint at The Blue Stone. Very deep brown with a tight, light tan head. Restrained dark-roasted malt, clean fermentation, a bit grainy, dry, moderate bitterness, straight-forward and well made.

von Trapp Bohemian Pilsener 2.9
Poured a pale yellow color with a white frothy head. Aroma is slightly skunky with pale malts and a touch of light yeast notes. Slightly tart with floral hops. Taste has a slight tartness to it with a decent amount of floral hops that help balance it out. Slightly skunky with pale malts in the finish. Not bad.

von Trapp Oktoberfest 3.4
Itís not the usual sweet fest beer. It has some malt sweetness but its bitterness makes it a robust version of the fest beer. Von Trapp has interesting versions of classic lager styles. 12 oz bottle in a variety pacl

von Trapp Vienna Amber 3.6
Pours a hazy burnt gold with a white head that quickly dissipates. Nose is slight malt. Body is medium. Taste is Munich malt with some complexity. Aftertaste has a higher hop bitterness lacking in other Viennas. Lighter in color than other Vienna lagers (Sam, Brooklyn, Leinenkugel, Dos Equis) but not in taste and bitterness. Very nice drink. 12 oz bottle in variety pack

von Trapp Vienna Amber 3.7
Tap. Pours an orange/amber with not much head. Excellent Munich malt flavors are prominent. Mild hops and bitterness. The only fault I could find with this beer was a bit of an odd aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

von Trapp Bohemian Pilsener 3.9
On tap at brewery. Pours hazy golden color with foamy white head. Aroma is light malt, spicy yeast, and floral hops. Flavor is a light sweet malt with peppery yeast and floral hops. Fantastic Pilsner. Tastes great sitting on the back deck of Von Trapp looking at the mountains.

This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a one and a half foamy off-white to tan head. Light foamy lacing stuck around the sides of the glass nicely. The smell started with a delicate amount of sweet milk chocolate sliding into a graceful smokiness. Light roasty edges balance it out. The taste was semi-sweet and roasty initially bringing in the smoke to balance. Light bready/yeastiness flows nicely into the grand scheme of things. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium with a nice score of level maltiness sliding over my tongue. Overall, really nice schwarzbier ranging close to the "rauchbier" style.

von Trapp Dunkel Lager 3.4
12 oz. bottle from Julioís. Poured a dark chestnut brown with crimson edges. Thin beige head. Aroma, although weak, hints at molasses, brown sugar and dark bread. Semi sweet with more dark baked bread, burnt sugar and roasted malt. Thin palate, could of been fuller. Didnít like it as much as I wanted to.

von Trapp Dunkel Lager 3.5
I want to like this beer more than I do. Itís an enjoyable and well-made brew; however, it is just a bit too sweet and really reminds me more of a brown ale at the finish. Not nuanced enough to be an appropriate dunkel lager, but still a nice beer.

von Trapp Oktoberfest 3.3
The typical caramel malts one should expect are present in this brew. However, I found the finish to be dull and almost stale.

von Trapp Trosten Bier 3.5
Bottled from Meditrina. Black with ring head. Smoky caramel aroma and hint of herbs. Sweet burnt caramel coffee chocolate brown sugar maple syrup with ashy woody smoky finish. Medium light body. Could use a hint more carbonation. A lot like Jacks Abby Smoke and Dagger but not as good. I was hoping this wouldd be a Bamberger rauchbier and not a black lager. Anyhow, pretty good, but Iíll continue to drink Great Northern Smokin Rauchbier as my regular. And Iím especially glad I didnít rate it last night when I poured it into a glass I had not properly cleaned and it sucked. Yes, clean glasses matter.

Smooth and sweet roasted malt aroma. Although it may look black if held to up to a light bulb itíll show deep mahogany red. Itís topped by a modest of white head. Silk smooth sweet roasted malt taste. Wet and clean finish. Excellent brew.

Dark garnet pour with minimal head and no retention. Aromas are roasty, toasty and malt. Flavor is a bit different with some nice semi-sweet caramel up front, finishing very balanced with mild hops. Well done dunkel.

von Trapp Oktoberfest 3.2
12oz bottle into a pint glass. Best by date reads "12/26/2015" Aroma - Bready malts, some caramel. Appearance - Golden color. Thin off white head with little retention. Taste - Replicates the nose. Bready malt flavors, touches of caramel, graham cracker? Herbal hops play almost a co-starring role as opposed to the supporting sort you see in many marzens. Not bad, just different. Finishes dry with lasting herbal hop bitterness. Palate - Light to medium bodied. Dry with snappy carbonation. Overall - A very solid offering though nothing really wows me. The slightly more assertive hop character was interesting though.

von Trapp Vienna Amber 3.8
Mild grain malt aroma. A clear golden amber body. Bold malt taste with only a hint of bitterness. Mild earthy sweet spice finish. Has a European lager quality(as best I can describe it) that I rarely taste in American craft brews.

Clear copper pour with zero head/retention/lacing. Looks kinda silly without any foam on top. Aroma starts to make up for the appearance, with some nice caramel, bread, and slight floral notes. Flavor is even better, full of nice malt breadiness. Very little carbonation is to my liking, making for a very smooth semi-sweet finish. One of the better of the style Iíve sampled.

von Trapp Oktoberfest 3.6
Howler/ mini-growler from Growler Garage, emptying step: itís yummy & I was hoping that this would be one of the breweryís best products, seeing as itís a German immigrant familyís operation.... Better than the other one Iíve rated here, but I can still tell that itís not a true Marzen from deutschland, so call it a mixed review? October actually starts in September in Germany, so itíll be that much sooner until Weihenstephaner 1000 in 2040! See you there

von Trapp Oktoberfest 3.2
LIVE RATE! On tap at WHYM. $7.00 exactly for the full pint. To stein glass, it pours a copper-toned effervescent orange with which a snowy white head 1 finger in length stood.

Aromas of German noble hops, corn kernels, mineral water, dry active yeast, sweat, and chalk.
Tastes much the same with the addition of DME, tin, and toasted breadcrumbs.
Clean and palatable but not amazingly complex.

Bottle from Bertís Deep golden color with a small tightly bubbled white head. Sweet bready pilsner maltiness with a touch of spice and just a hint of fruit. Pretty nice stateside version of a German Lager, most donít do it this well.

von Trapp Oktoberfest 3.6
This was poured into a mug. The appearance was a sly hazy bronzed to burnt golden amber color with a slim fingerís worth of foamy to bubbly head that quickly died off. There wasnít any lacing. The smell started off with crisp sweet caramel malts running into toffee and nuts. A light earthy to grassy hop rounded out the edges nicely. The taste was moderately sweet with a semi-balanced grassy edge to the flavor, not bad, good for the most part. A lingering sweet caramel maltiness runs into the aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly light allowing smooth sweetness rolling over my tongue. Overall, to me, it works as an Oktoberfest. Iíd have again.

4oz pour at Johnsonís. Pours yellow gold with a persistent white head. Aroma is honey and cracker. Flavor is slow ghtly sweet, with honey, wheat, a touch of lemon and just a hint of saaz hop flavor in the finish. An easy drinking summer lager with no discernible flaws.

If Amber was gold, then this beer might get higher ratings, i.e. color is way off & obviously clashes w/ name of style.... Tastes reminiscent of Yuengling, which is a more true representation. Vermont H2O plays a big role here, Shed beers used to be made in Stowe but are produced in Middlebury VT now

This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a slight hazy burnt brown color with a fingerís worth of white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some light messy lacing sticking and then sliding down into the beer. The smell started off with a sharp sweet breadiness rolling over some nutty malts. Lager yeast shows a nice sweet effect. The taste was mainly sweet with a slight smokey effect rolling over in flavor. A slight roasty to sweet aftertaste rolls into the aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs fairly smooth with a decent sharp nuttiness hitting my tongue. Overall, as a Munich Dunkel, it works. Iíd have again and it could definitely be a decent food beer. Maybe closer to dessert.

12 oz. bottle thanks to Willrunforbeer for the share! Aroma has that distinct Bohemian pils malt and damp grass clippings. Maybe a trace of honey. Flavor is spot on the style. Big Pils malt, light hop balance with a slightly funky lager yeast in the finish. Has that Macro lager yeast finish, OH YEAH!

von Trapp Golden Helles Lager 3.3
Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Best by date reads 9/29/2015. A - Sweet notes - honey, oat cereal. Fresh cut grass. Yeast (buttered biscuit) is present, despite the fact the beer has been filtered. A - Clear, straw yellow. Whispy, white head. T - Chewy, sweet flavors upfront (honey, oat cereal) followed by slightly spicy hop bitterness. Good balance. Resiny bitter hops linger on the pallet. M - Light-medium bodied, chewy. Soft carbonation. O - Though unexpected, the diacetyl was a welcomed addition to this well balanced pale lager.

von Trapp Golden Helles Lager 3.6
Best by date of 10/03/15. This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a transparent golden yellow color with carbonation rising at a decent pace. A one finger white foamy head accompanied the top of the beer and gently dissipated leaving some light stringy and clingy lacing. The smell started off with a sweet biscuit ordeal and blended into some light sweet corn. The taste was mainly sweet and added a light crisp bready setting leading into a refined gentle biscuity aftertaste and having no finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. Carbonation comes across fairly smooth leading to an all around smooth feel over my tongue. Overall, I say as a Munich Helles lager, it works. It would probably be a great food beer.

von Trapp Vienna Amber 3.1
This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a nice looking hazy golden orange color with a two finger white foamy head that dissipated within about thirty seconds leaving messy clingy lacing sticking to the glass. The smell started off with crisp sweet nutty malts leading into a slight sweet biscuity edge. The taste was mainly sweet through the combination of the nutty malts and biscuity aspect and also allowing a slight roastiness coming into balance. Thereís a nutty aftertaste and a quick sweet finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. Carbonation feels right and leads to a nice smoothness about it. Overall, this was a pretty good Vienna Lager that I could have again.

von Trapp Golden Helles Lager 3.5
12oz bottle from mixed 6 pack, poured into shaker pint glass.

Aroma: low spicy hops, slight diacetyl

Appearance: golden, clear, white head

Taste: Light bitter, Light sweet

Palate: light to medium body, avg carbonation

Overall: A nice Helles. Very clean pilsener taste with a slight hint of diacetyl in aroma and taste (or maybe my diacetyl dectector is too sensitive). The diacetyl isnít overpowering, but itís present if youíve every made a diacetyl homebrew. Very nice flavor. Good hops and malt balance for style. Not sure the malt bill is as "complex" as indicated on the label, but itís a fine and standard Helles.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. The pour is a cloudy, yellow tone with a lingering foamy white head. Toasted German and pale malts to start in the nose with a friendly sweetness and grass. The body is light to medium. Better than anticipated. Toasty sweetness in the taste with a mild, grassy bitterness to finish. Just a classic and likable Pilsner.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Slightly hazy olive-yellow pour with short-lived head. The aroma is of roasted pale malts, grass, and sweetness. A little overripe fruit. Light to medium body. The taste has an array of sweetness and clean crisp hops making it slightly complex and well balanced. It is ideal for a warm day like today.
