Again, this varies wildly based on bottle or at-brewery consumption. I wonder if their bottles get boiled in a warehouse before being distributed. On tap at the brewery in a pils glass (wrong glass), aroma of light citrus, floral, cracker malt. Taste is more of the same, this seems more like a delightfully hoppy pils to me. Medium body, very dry, excellent beer.

I have a wildly differing opinion of this beer based on where and how it is consumed. If I rated this purely on what I experienced in a variety pack purchase in MA, it would be a 3, tops (even though the bottles were fairly fresh). But at the brewery, it was a different experience. Poured into a pils glass, clear golden color, nice white head. Aroma of grain, slight pepper, and that typical pils scent. Taste is so crisp and clean, lightly sweet up front, crackers, slight pepper, and a decent bite from the hops. Light to medium body, lots of flavor, this could be consumer by the gallon.

von Trapp India Pale Lager
Can at home in London - picked up in Waterbury. Pours clear gold, effervescent, with a billowing, frothy white head. Crispy biscuits and pale grains in the nose, some citrus peel. Light sweet flavour, fairly dry, with more pale biscuits, lemon peel, moderate grassy bitterness. Light bodied with lively carbonation. Clean finish, crisp and drying, with more biscuity sugars, dry hay, crispy cereal grains, more lemon peel and grass. Great stuff. Really drinkable.

von Trapp India Pale Lager
Purchased a 4-pack of very fresh 16 oz. cans at Brewfest Beverage in Ludlow, VT. while on a trip. I’ve been a fan of other Von Trapp lagers so didn’t think a 4-pack was a gamble - and, as it turned out, there really wasn’t any gamble involved. This IPL more than lived up to the standards set by its predecessors. Nice golden pour with attractive lacing. Smell and taste dominated by citrusy floral hops. Quite a hop bite for a lager but not unexpected for an India Pale Lager. Glad to see that Von Trapp is canning a number of their lagers - no difference in taste but I just prefer the can as a better all-around package.

I can’t say I really enjoyed this. It just doesn’t have the depth and subtlety of a true German Hefe. It’s a little too sweet or something....I don’t know, I just can’t put my finger on it. I am going to try it again, however, and will re-rate if warranted.

TAR
3.8
von Trapp India Pale Lager
Bottle, best by Oct. 9, 2016. Unfiltered golden. Gentle pour yields a fat cap of frothy, clingy foam. Soft and elegant hop bouquet of honeysuckle, apricot, lemon meringue, melon rind, piecrust and hay. Fluffy carbonation feels very natural in the mouth. Spicy, herbal and lemon-zest hop bitterness rises up to match the profusion of bright, supple and oily hop flavor that precedes it. Quite zippily hoppy, with a rounded juiciness which bursts with luscious oils. Envelope-pushing hops are potent to the point of stinging the tongue, yet there is not a trace of resin or astringency. Very polished hop flavors reveal a plentitude of nectarine and apricot as they continually unfold, capped with a chewy bitterness which gets enveloped by beautifully extracted haylike notes. Biting yeast marks the beer with character. Low filtration aids the mouthfeel and richly textured baguette-like malt so commendably. Soft finish shows excellent attenuation and even balance between supremely oily Hallertauer (honeysuckle) and pillowy, finely detailed pils malt. I’m always suspicious of IPLs, because nearly 100% of the time they’re just another excuse to put another brutish IPA in the brewery’s portfolio, and they seldom bear any resemblance to traditional lager. But, Johannes is crafting some rather authentic lagers in Vermont, and this doesn’t diverge much from the rest of his line despite the misleading name. It’s rare to find this kind of finesse and purity in an American hop bomb, but this is uniquely elegant. Very impressive, and still very European in character. Thanks to AirForceHops for the bottle!

12 oz. bottle purchased at Prost, North Hampton, NH. Nearly clear gold with just a slight haze. Aroma shows a light lemon peel with a mild floral hop presence. Pilsner malt is also evident.

The flavor is exactly as the aroma leads you to believe. Pilsner malt backbone with a mild bitterness after the sip from Floral hops. No date code on the bottle but this must be a fresher bottling. Hops are alive and doing well. Good lighter body with a fresh mouthfeel. It is a nice IPL.

von Trapp India Pale Lager
This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a soft hazy yellow color with a slight transparency to it. Carbonation could be seen rising at a moderate pace to fill a one finger white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Semi-moderate lacing runs here and there. The smell takes the crisp sweet floral hops to bounce upon some delicate smooth sweet bready malts. The taste was basically the same with a sly little bite of the floral hops sliding into the aftertaste and then on into the finish whish is somewhat sticky wet. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body with a crisp sweet sessionability about it. Carbonation rides fairly low so some stickiness runs about, nothing overbearing, feels good and still some light hop harshness comes to give it a slight bitter/harshness, why, well, it just does. Overall, as an India pale lager, I’d say it’s a good one, definitely fits everything von Trapp says it should. I’d have this again.

BBQ beer on Memorial Day. Extremely light color and flavor, but everything was also crisp and clean. Low hop bite, which left the slightly sweet, slightly grainy malt body to come through. Extremely light, but also perfectly pleasant.

Appearance :
Top: medium white cap with rings on glass.
Base: hazy gold.
Palate : soft bodied, very clean.
Taste: Clean, no dms, hinted with smoke (sic!). Very drinkable lager. I like it a lot.

Bottle on Mother’s Day. It’s a Czech pilsner, which isn’t my favorite style, but it does a game job of trying to stay flavorful and interesting. I didn’t find it exciting, and I thought it was a bit thin, but there weren’t any big flaws and it hit the spot on a hot day.

12 oz. bottle purchased at Prost, North Hampton, NH. Deep ruby or brown type color, thin tan head. Aroma is rich with Munich malt showing, chocolate hints, burnt sugar, dried fall leaves. Earthy

The flavor has a bready character with the same earthy malts that are found in the aroma. Sweetness balance by some spicy hop bitterness. The body is decent for a lager yet leans on the lighter side. Overall for the style it is pretty correct.

Consistent example for the style, this pours a clear golden with small white head that settles to a ring with a bit of clinging. Aroma is toasted malts and grassy hops with a touch of honey sweet. Flavor follows nose with just a bit too much carbonation along the way. Finishes briefly semi-sweet but clean. Very nice.

Flavor is spot on for the style. Molasses / caramel base that gives some mild sweetness. Mild nuances of chocolate. The finish has a burnt grain and very light smoky hint. Traces of yeast. The carbonation is moderate with a chalky / smoky grain texture. Easy to drink. This is rather nice.

Bottle from Brewtopia. CLoudy golden orange with lasting head and lace. Clovey spicy aroma with some wheat tang and light banana. Peachy malt with grass and wheaty tang and fairly long assertive spicy citrus mineral grassy bitterness. Medium light fairly soft body. I like my hefes sweeter with more banan esters and less bite in the finish. Had high hopes for this. Oh well, back to Paulaner even though it’s not as fresh.

12 oz. bottle purchased at Prost. Hazy lighter yellow color, decent head retention. Aroma is light citrus, mild banana with a bready malt hint.

The flavor shows the German yeast character that you would want in the style. Body is lighter and not having a chewy yeast texture. Pretty much standard for the style. Decently made but can’t stand next to the older German examples in style. No flaws or problems.

Buttered kettle corn without the saltiness, European hop spiciness. Lacks the creaminess of the top five or six German Helles but is a good interpretation of the style and can be had at a fair price. Not concerned where beers are from as long as they are enjoyable. That being said this is the best one I’ve tried from the US and a top 10 or 15 Helles overall.
