Professor Fritz Briem Reviews

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 2.7
Pours hazy, hubby solar yellow with a thick but effervescent snow-white head. Aroma presents nice fruity and yeasty tones. Flavor has a malty core that supports yeasty and somewhat sour fruit notes. Mouthfeel is on the thin side and has little fizz. Nevertheless, give it a try.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 3.8
On tap at Trapeze. Crisp, refreshing and delighful. Definitely a summer beer but superb for the style. Super tart and tons of lemon/ citrus notes. Light bodied and crisp but still complex. Lactic notes throughout. Really well done.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 3.8
Poured from a bottle. Slightly heavy haze with a mild straw yellow hue. Has a very big pillowy white head that disappears quickly. Very nice grain and cereal aromas with a citrus and lemon pop in the nose. Above average acidity and tartness that is very pleasant. Champagne like body to heighten and play with the sour quality and bring out some of the grassy and citrus notes. I would buy this often.

Bottle, 50cL. @Poitiers, bar Le_Palais_de_la_Bière. A clear yellow golden orange beer ; many small bubbles ; big creamy white omelet ; good retention ; good lacing. Banana, clove, smoke, roast, herbal note. Light to medium sweet, light sour, light dry refreshing. Light to medium body, thin texture, soft carbonation, sweet refershing finish ; smoky note. Overall, highly drinkable ; nothing outstanding, nevertheless good "light smoky german hefeweizen" ; 1-dimensional.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 4.2
Pours bright light orange with a two finger white head with nice lacing. Aroma is of tart fruits, wheat bread, funkyness, salt, lemonade, and overly ripe fruits. Taste is about the same as the aroma. Has a medium body with a creamy mouthfeel and a dry, sour, long finish. Overall, a very nice Berliner that super refreshing and drinkable.

13th Century Grut Bier 2.4
Bottle. Gold in color with a nice head. Aroma and taste both was like some kind of old timey medicine. Just average. Wouldn’t want to drink again.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 3.1
Bottle. Not real familiar with this style, better than I thought it would be. Gold in color with a large, explosive head that slowly dissolved into a slightly irregular head. Aroma was slightly fruity with a lactic acid note. Taste was not as sour as you would imagine. Taste was almost a tart wine taste. Not bad.

Piwo Grodziskie - Grätzer Ale 3.3
Bottle. Pours hazy orange, medium kinda fizzy off-white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma is paper smoke, wheat, dust. Flavor is extremly lightly tart, light sweet, minimal bitterness, hints of smoke, lemon, wheat. Medium body. Not too exciting.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 3.6
Bottled 02.10.14 Straw, pale yellow hue. Strong, musty, apple acidic aroma on pour. Fizzy white head. Adequate retention. Lemon warhead, aroma of an apple cider. First half drinks like a cider, then the a creamy maltiness pokes out near the end. Mostly sour on the lips. Mouthfeel is heavy on carbonation, but no astringent bite. A bit bland in taste, papery (not oxidized though), finish very dry like a vernors soda. 4 years ago I would have thought this to be unique, now I’m bored. Props to staying to the style.

Piwo Grodziskie - Grätzer Ale 3.7
Part of a 10 euro, 6 beer blind tasting set at Trois 8’s biergarten event in Paris. 100% smoked wheat used by this German gypsy brewer. It pours golden with an off-white head. The aroma is of honeyed smoked wheat, it’s got a lovely soft body with flavors of tangy wheat, smoke & honey. Elegant.

Piwo Grodziskie - Grätzer Ale 3.6
500 ml bottle. Clear amber-gold pour with very light haze. Aroma is wheaty, light smokiness, campfire smoke. Taste is lightly tart, very mild smokiness, bready wheaty notes, quite lactic, strange but oddly appealing. Palate is light bodied with thin carbonation, silky. Nice stuff.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 4
1pt bottle- Explosive carbonation, fruity fresh scent with less tang. Not too cloudy golden color. Not too sour in the taste, has a slight bit in the middle, more sweet in the ending.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 3.7

Piwo Grodziskie - Grätzer Ale 3
Draft at Brasserie V in Madison. Just a hint of haze. Light amber pour with h a slight white head. Low carbonation. Low level of tartness and a low level of smoke. Mild in all regards. Biggest feature is the bitterness on the backend.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 3
Draft at Mekong. Pours golden with a thin white head. Not much lacing in the glass. A slight hint of sourness on the nose. A bit of tartness on the tongue but it feels pretty faint. Finished clean. A lot more subdued and laid back then I was hoping for. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Piwo Grodziskie - Grätzer Ale 3.4
Amber pour with suspended particulate matter. Normal head volume, lacing and retention. Light nose of mild smoke, a bit of sour funk and hints of malt and yeast. As it warms, floral and apple notes are present. Heavy light body with a smooth texture. Nicely carbonated with a bit of effervescence in the middle and a fair burst in the finish. The flavor profile is good, but rather weak. You get a little weak smoke, a little weak sour funk and a hint of balancing sweetness. As it warms, sour funk is the most prominent. The finish is semidry.

Piwo Grodziskie - Grätzer Ale 3.4
500, capped. Thanks, Michael! Many cheers to you, my friend. Pours a clear dark amber with minimal head or lace. There’s a minimum or tart tanginess on the nose, similar to maybe overripe plums, but the predominant note is definitely a sweet woodsmoke. Creamy medium body with minimal carb. Lots of sweet woodsmoke on the mid palate with hints of overripe fruity tartness. Mildly smoky finish.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 3.2
A little higher ABV than expected. Effervescent and straw colored on the pour. Tart and dry. Very enjoyable. Will absolutely purchase again. This would be a good entry into the broader sour beer category since it isn’t so sweet or have the additional fruits.

Piwo Grodziskie - Grätzer Ale 3.6
24k gold liquid sitting under a small head of foam. Big fruity tartness with a bit of smoke in the smell. Taste wise, again, delightful fruity tartness backed by a very mild amount of smoke. Fairly subtle flavours which makes this a very easy drinker. Light bodied. Nice historical brew!

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 2.9
Pours a very light yellow color with a light citrus fruit aroma. Taste is dry, easy drinking with notes of pineapple and citrus fruits. The dryness of the beer kills the aftertaste leaving only a small apple, pineapple juice aftertaste.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 3.3
Bottle: Translucent, bright-golden & sunshine yellow body; super cloudy & topped with a spritzy, foamy white head that is gone in moments. Aroma of tart apples, lemons, light lactic acidity, German yeast, clove, a touch of spice, & some dusty wheat. Flavor is very effervescent & light. Wheat, musk, lemon-lime zest, a touch of apple, lemon, & some very sharp carbonation to close things out. Super lofty. Somewhat mineral-ish with a hint of cereal grain alongside the wheat body.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 3.7
Bottle on 25/7/14 Pale golden with white, big head that lasting and lacing beautifully. It definitely has wheat!! Aroma is phenolic(light clove), earthy, light tartness, sweet hay, spicy wheat. Reminds me of a hefe but less intense and a bit more complex. Flavor is light sweet and has just a hint of tartness, wheaty, sourdoughy, nice light bread crust. Aftertaste is tart, some earthy tones from the hops, light salinity. Generally my first try of a Berliner Weisse that is like a soured Weiss, meaning it’s got the phenolic and doughy character but with lactic tartness. No bret character or funkiness what so ever.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 3.3
Pours cloudy lemon yellow with enormous white head, and both are indicators of what’s to come. When the head subsides, the nose is lemon, dough and yeast. On the palate, the dough adds a sweet touch, but the overwhelming flavor is the refreshing lemon, which is tart but not mouth-puckering. The other element is the pillowy carbonation, which remains even as the head goes. This was bottled in November 2014 and perhaps needs a bit more time to develop. As it is, this is a very straightforward brew, ideal for a summer’s day in the beer garden, but not geared toward late winter.

Piwo Grodziskie - Grätzer Ale 3.4
Bottle 500ml. Pours slightly hazy amber with huge frothy slightly off-white head. Good lacing. Aroma is of smoke, spices, flowers. Taste is of sourness, sugar, some smoke. Weird. Palate: Medium (almost to full) body. Low-medium carbonation. Overall: Good. Nice to try. Would not be a go-to beer for me.

Piwo Grodziskie - Grätzer Ale 3.6
Bottle (500 ml). Bought @ Winooski Beverage Warehouse. Split 2-ways with Minderbinder.

Appearance: Almost clear bright golden with a medium persistent and easy to revive white head along some lacing.

Aroma: Mild. Grains forward along light smoke, hints of lemon peel and mineral presence.

Taste: A bit more expressive than the aroma. Quite mineral with mild acidity, light smoke and lemon peel.

Palate: Medium body. Medium carbonation. Mild moderately lasting mineral and herbal finish with smokey notes.

Overall: Somewhat tasty for a 4% abv beer even if it’s isn’t exactly very flavorful. Easy drinking. I like the mild smoke presence and acidity in this one.

1809 Berliner Style Weisse 3.7
Cloudy yellow with 2-inches of medium-coarse cream-colored head, moderate rate of decay. Aroma is tart hay, sour-wheat dough, a touch of fake-grape flavored candy, hint of ground of candy cigarettes. Body is light-medium-light, watery, a touch of starchiness, carbonation is big with a strong burn and medium coarseness. Flavor is a very consumable tart grain, hints of lemon and pound cake. Tartness is incredibly clean certainly no acetic, but also almost no indications of the usual lactic signatures. A great Berliner, very yummy, top-notch body. The abv is a bit on the high side for the style, but otherwise a go-to.
