Minhas Thumper American IPA 2.8
$3 bomber at Trader Joeís, but itís called Boatswain American IPA. Again, let me reiterate... $3 bomber of IPA. An at 6.7% itís probably the best thing to happen to the homeless since St. Ides came to market back in the late 80ís. So, with this in mind, this turned out to be unremarkable, though not as bad as St. Ides. They also have a DIPA for the same price, but I knew I was already pushing the boundaries of taste and self loathing by getting this. That said, itís not awful and should I embark on hard times, this will be my sauce (or maybe the DIPA... you need milage for the buck when youíre down on your luck). Itís a lame IPA... thatís the depth of my review

Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA 2.6
Purchased a bottle under the Boatswain label, and poured into a pint glass to drink. The beer had a cloudy, sediment deep amber-copper color with a good-sized foamy/creamy off-white head with average retention, cling, and lacing. Its aroma featured grainy and pine hops notes along with some barley and spice. The taste was mostly a bitter and sour grainy blend with some bread and earthy tones, and a sour alcohol finish. The body was mostly wet and full, with average carbonation and thickness, and a strong alcohol presence.

Minhas Mystical Jack Traditional Ale 2.9
Also known as Boatswain Heavy Lift Vessel. Good taste, good alcohol content.

Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA 2.5
A disgusting IPA, with almost no hops to it. Good high alcohol content though.

NGB Gluten Free Lager 2
12 oz in Seattle. Very pale white yellow. Very clear and cidery look. Pale sweet, odd flavors but effect is still like a crappy weak euro/macro lager. Cardboard. Almost like a NA beer.

Minhas Chocolate Bunny Stout 2.9
Bottle under the Boatswain Chocolate Stout moniker from Trader Joeís in Newport News. Black pour with a short, fizzy tan head. Aroma is roasted malt, light cocoa and watery chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, toasted grains and light chocolate notes. Body is medium with a soft, prickly carbonation. Ends with more roasted malt and light chocolate.

Boxer Watermelon 0.7
Please Minhas Brewery, stop. Just stop brewing beer or whatever it is that you call it. A friend over the holidays had me try this "craft beer", I almost laughed myself into not breathing. Tried it and no surprise ... horrendous. Stop ... just stop.

Red Oval Classic Lager 1.9
can as name tag lager. Pale golden with one finger head. Sweet corn and a very strange perfumey or soapy nature. Not quite unpleasant, but not something Iím looking for in a lager either.

Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA 2.9
22 ounce bomber from Traders Joeís. Limited aroma. Leans sweet with more malt than hops. Wouldnít buy again.
Monday, December 14, 2015

Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA 3.5
Bottle under the Boatswain Double IPA moniker. Aroma is fruity and floral with soft malt notes. Taste is very fruity with berry notes, light citrus, floral hops and sweet malt. Body is medium with a moderate, bubbly carbonation. Finishes with more fruity notes, berries, light citrus, sweet malt, floral hops and a touch of caramel.

Mountain Crest Classic Lager 2.5
Aroma is mild bubblegum and fruit. The flavor is bubblegum, fruit, grains/malts/adjuncts and a tart/slightly sour finish.

Huber Bock Beer 3.2
Bottle. Pours clear brown with thin off white head. Nose is brown sugar. Nasty taste. Chemical. Caramel. Brown sugar. Couldn't finish it.

Minhas Chocolate Bunny Stout 3.4
Purchased under Boatswain Chocolate Stout at Trader Joe in Vegas. Pours a real dark brown colour with a frothy beige head, long lasting with creamy lacing. Chocolate malt aromas with the cacao added. Some stronger hops than usual for this style. Eventually, nutty notes comes out with mild coffee. Some sweetness flavours from the chocolate with roasted malts and light bitterness in the finish. This chocolate stout is a little too sweet, rich overall. Started with a lot of hops for the style, but now has disappeared in the taste.

Minhas Mystical Jack Traditional Ale 3.1
Labeled as boatswain heavy lift vessel. Lighter in color than I thought. Thin head, no lacing. Aroma is floral, grassy, I suspect English hops, it has a Nobel nose and flavor. Kinda plane, but as is the style I suppose. Itís actually not unpleasant.

Minhas Chocolate Bunny Stout 3.1
Dark brown/black color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted sweet malt, cocoa/chocolate, & some coffee; Flavor of roasted sweet malt, coffee, chocolate, and some caramel; Finish is slightly bitter; Somewhat artificial sweetener taste to it - but not too bad.

Minhas Fighting Billy Bock 3.5
Bottle. Pours dark brown with some off white head. Nose and taste is toffee and caramel. Some roast. Nasty aftertaste.
Saturday, November 28, 2015

Minhas Mystical Jack Traditional Ale 2.7
Aroma of brown sugar, raisins, bread. Deep brown color with a huge tan head. Sweet up front. Sweet fruits, some caramel. Muddy on the finish with a slight bitterness and alcohol burn. Off aftertaste on finish as well. Meh.

Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA 2.7
Bomber from Trader Joeís. Very nice price for a double IPA so I gave it a try. Now I see why the price was so low. Not terrible, but nothing good to really point out either. Pours a mostly clear copper amber color with a medium sized off white head that quickly fades to a thin cap. Some loose sudsy lacing along the glass. The aroma is extremely muted for a "double IPA" with notes of caramel but no real hop presence. The flavor has some alcohol and sweetness with bitterness in the finish but nothing exciting going on. Oh well. At least I didnít spend much on this venture.

Radek Kliber
Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA 3.3
Where and how: b. 650 ml as Boatswain Double IPA
Aroma medium intense, citrusy hop feel with plenty of red malt. Mild whiff of alcohol.
Appearance :
Top: medium, white with some lace and rings.
Base: hazy amber
Palate : medium, an OK impression.
Taste: hops muted, herbal zesty feel with mid-heft red malts. Not overly sweet mind so. It felt as strong red ale. Late residual hop feel with soft warming alcohol.
other notes decent.

Axe Head Fruit Punch 1
710ml can. (incomprehensible scribble) [pink] pour. Aroma is generic brand licorice twists. Flavor is boozy sweet tarts. Tastes like an underage stripperís pussy.

Boxer Ice 0.6
Pour is dark yellow, a lightning fast head and light carbonation. smell is barely there: sweet abstract corn and funky earth? Taste is barely there, again abstract sweetness, sweetened palate that fades quicker than the head. This doesnít taste like anything!

Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA 0.5
22FL OZ (>$3) this was possibly anti beer. dog shit in the microwave on full high.

Minhas Oktoberfest (2013-present) 2.9
Had this as Rhinelander. It is is strikingly tolerable for a Minhas brew, which is different than being really good. Itís clear orange w/ a foamy head. Itís got earthy hops and is kinda grassy. It does have a nice light texture. Itís a bit sweet and unfinished w/ some odd yeasty notes as well. For all thatís wrong w/ it, it is tolerably drinkable though.

Huber Bock Beer 2.9
On tap at minus brewery. Strong old school Bock. Not a lot of Carmel but still very nice with no after taste

Minhas Mystical Jack Traditional Ale 2.7
22 oz bottle poured into a nonic pint glass. Bought from Trader Joeís, labeled as Boatswain H.L.V. Ale Heavy Lift Vessel. Hazy amber brown with close to two fingers of beige head. Aromas of caramel, malt, some figs, light toasty notes. Tastes of dark fruit, caramel, sweet syrup. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Cloying sweetness.

Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA 3.1
I donít particularly like rabbits at all. Less as pets, and even less as farm animals. Ok... there was a distinct alcohol presence and it made me feel relaxed with all the tension in the dart tourney (I won thank you very much!) but again.. it was a muddle of a beer. with no overall outstanding qualities other than it was cheap. Wooo!

Minhas Thumper American IPA 3.2
This particular beer was provided by Buddy Alex for the dart tourney in which I particularly dominated. I have this fluid to thank. A decent IPA but it does not stand on the shoulders of giants. Thru Boatswain label via trader joeís. Mer. Body was a bit on the watery side.

Minhas Chocolate Bunny Stout 4.1
Joy of Joys! The third in the dart tournament contest. A solid chocolate stout. Sweet and full bodied. Nose of cacao and bakers chocolate. Subtle hop finish for me. Evidently aliased to Trader Joeís. Especially economical.

Minhas Lazy Mutt Farmhouse Ale 1.8
33 cl bottle @ home. Pours cloudy golden with a white head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma and flavour are lemons, yeast, and funk - with a slightly dry finish.

Huber Bock Beer 2.5
Bottle from Millets Farm near Abingdon. Itís brown with a light fizz and a thin beige head. Thereís caramel and brown sugar throughout. Itís very sweet and the alcohol is very evident. Felt like it was dissolving my teeth. Thereís no real off notes in it- but then if you ate brown sugar by the spoonful you wouldnít get any off notes. Just too sweet for me Iím afraid.

Minhas Lazy Mutt Farmhouse Ale 1.3
Bottle shared at CBC CW during The Cad 10yr celebrations, London. Thanks to Ian for this one. It pours a clean golden color with small white head. Aroma is off, plastic, burnt, sweet, mess. Taste is off, vomit, plastic, mud, sweet mess. Undrinkable for sure

Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA 2.7
22 oz bottle poured into a Spiegelau tulip. Bottle from Trader Joeís as Rhinelander Boatswain Double IPA Twin Screw Steamer. Very slightly hazy amber/orange with a finger of off-white head. Aromas of big malt right off the bat, some citrus, light floral. Tastes of malt, some citrus, caramel, biscuit, sweet syrup. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Sort of a thin syrupy mouthfeel. Very malt-forward and sweet. Not terrible for two bucks and change but not something Iíd revisit.

Boxer Light (US Version) 1.2
12 oz. can pours a clear straw yellow color with a quickly diminishing white head. Aroma is not strong, but has corn, grass, and metal. Taste is slightly sweet without any complexity and thankfully a short finish with no disgusting aftertaste. Almost tasteless. Body is watery thin with average carbonation. At 50 cents/can in a 36-pack, you get what you pay for. I prefer the regular Boxer 36-pack, but would like to meet a woman who buys this one instead of it to lt to stop gaining weight without giving up her habit of massive beer consumption.

Minhas Thumper American IPA 3.4
Labeled Boatswain American I.P.A. at Trader Joe"s. Much better than the ratings. Modest aroma, but taste was a fine blend of sweet malt and woodsy hop flavor. 6.7% ABV.

Axe Head Fruit Punch 1.1
This is twelve percent alcohol cough syrup. Holy crap, if I have ever had a beverage that inspires violence, this is it. I am going to drink the hell out of this and pound someones face in w/ my sticky, sweet fists. Finishes w/ a long alcohol burn.
Tuesday, October 06, 2015

Minhas Chocolate Bunny Stout 3.5
22 oz bottle as Boatswain Chocolate Stout, poured into a tulip pint glass. Dark brownish black with two fingers of nice tan head. Aromas of maple syrup, milk chocolate, roasty notes. Tastes of milk chocolate, light roasty notes, vanilla. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Not bad for two bucks.

Minhas Oktoberfest (2013-present) 3.4
Orange and sweet taste. Draft pour at Lena brewing company. Orange and vanilla flavors. Pretty interesting beer

Red Oval Classic Lager 2.4
From a can that says name tag so I guess its pale yellow. First taste is a little coarse for a typical American lager. Good carbonation, has a tad of that minhy flavor to it. Seems to mellow just a tiny bit during the session. Ubiquitous, cool, cheap, decent generic pale American beer, what else can be said! $3 for a sixer at trader joes, heheh.
Thursday, September 24, 2015

Minhas Lazy Mutt Farmhouse Ale 1.9
Bottle. Frothy White fair fully deminishing head. MOderate malty and light hoppy aroma. Moderate swet and light bitter flavor. Short light bitter finish. Watery palate.

Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA 1.9
$3 bomber from trader joes labeled as boatswain double IPA, twin screw steamer. First I thought it to be a little ruff then it seem to smooth over a little as the session continued, must have been the 9% alky dulling my senses. Yes, some dull hop sensations with a tad of sweetness along with that typical mouth coating ipa feeling. but I must say, this is probably a little easier to take than many double IPA. Not sure if it really is a double but it provides the brain numbing kick of a double. Good value fer sure! Glad to have come across these boatswain beers, very good value for what they are.

Minhas Thumper American IPA 1.6
$3 bomber! This stuff so rude it borders on the double imperial old IPA taste. Cloudy iced tea color. Strong, medicinal. Alky begins to stick its ugly head up. Does have some minor cutting co2 in the background. Difficult, semi hard, strenuous, arduous, laborious, tough, onerous, burdensome, demanding, punishing, grueling, and nearly back-breaking, Good deal, thanks trader joe.

Minhas Thumper American IPA 2.1
Decent pour but another horrible offering from minhas! Pours copper w/ an off white head & lacing. The aroma is just a little malty. The taste is very odd & more similar to malt than hop. Fiercely hopped? Really? I donít get any hop flavor & Iím not sure if Iím going to b able to get these 22 ounces down! Ehhhh

Minhas Mystical Jack Traditional Ale 2.3
From Trader Joeís Nashua, a $2.79 bomber, what a deal! Labeled as Boatswain HLV. Thicker looking dark cloudy ice tea color. Somewhat viscous on the palate as well, medicinal in taste. It shows itís 7% up front. Some barely sizzling co2 in there saves it. Boosts my overall score by a few points because of the price, otherwise a thicker high alky malty thang that is difficult until you down a 10 oz; then rest goes pretty easy after you numb up the synapses a little. .

Minhas Imperial Jack Double IPA 0.7
This is the third beer Iíve had from Minhas brewing, albeit listed under a different label. The first two were actually so bad I returned them. This one is barely better. Resembles a double IPA only in colour. Body is watery syrup. Aroma is malt extract with not even a hint of hops. Flavour is malt extract; no grapefruit or any citrus for that matter, nothing earthy or herbal, not even one iota of bitterness. Did they even add hops to this rough bunny? Minhas has no business calling this a double IPA. Alcoholic malt water at best.

Mountain Crest Classic Lager 1.3
Straight from the can on draft day!! Damn that is sweet, like cheap hard caramel candy, corn and malt. Gross!! Go Crotchville Kevlar Condoms!!

Radek Kliber
Minhas Thumper American IPA 3.2
Where and how: b. 650 ml
Aroma medium strong, mildly pungent with feel of caramel sugars, touch of citrus.
Appearance :
Top: small, off-white with rings on glass.
Base: hazy, amber
Palate : medium bodied, drinkable. Average, maybe tad lighter than most carbonation. Average finish.
Taste: interesting blend, chose of hops and malts. It created notes of black tea, tad leafy greens with raw end.

Minhas Chocolate Bunny Stout 2.2
650 ML bottle from Trader Joes; labeled as "Boatswain Chocolate Stout." $2.49 for this big bottle. Aroma: Cocoa powder is most prevalent along with some very light roasty notes; itís fairly one dimensional all around but not offensive. Appearance: Thin, dark garnet brown pour with a sticky mocha head that settles into a creamy skin. Flavor: More caramel than cocoa up front, and all around; anything resembling cocoa or roast character is dialed back; the finish dries up well. Palate: Light body, slick texture, soft carbonation, abrupt finish. Overall: Itís pretty unimpressive, but not undrinkable, either. Of course, itís a bargain, and probably best reserved for those moments when you need a quick stout fix, or you are far enough into your drinking session for flavor and execution not to matter much anymore.
