Bottle thanks to Dave. It pours near black with a small beige head. The aroma is rich roasted malts, cookie dough, chocolate, earthy roast, treacle and fruit cake. The taste is smooth, rich roasted malts, charred wood, bitter orange, cocoa, spice, cookie, mild astringency and coffee grounds with a lingering warming finish. Full body and fine carbonation. Decent.

Bottled. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma has apple and citrus. Hazy, pale yellow coloured brew with no head. The taste has apples, lemons and is quite a bit sourish in a strange way. Does the cider mask an infection in the beer? Not sure. Anyway, quite a carbonated brew. Not sure what to think of it, but it is at east refreshing.

Beltane Maiden
Bottled. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma is citric, has some lemon, and smells winey. Hazy, yellow coloured with a white head. The taste is quite sour and tart, infected. There is some sweetish lemon and citrus. It is kinda refreshing, but definately not in the way it should be.

This appears golden and hazy with no head at all. Before I even stick my nose over the beer I am immediately put in mind of champagne: an aroma of grapes, fresh alcohols and yeasty esters. And then you put your nose over and immediately get a noseful of the same and then Belgian ale yeasts and lemon become predominant. The beer is tart, fizzy and tastes of non-vintage champagne, more of a young Belgian sour ale. What I don’t get is sweetness or a smooth velvety finish. Refreshing? Certainly. Like a Belgian witbier? Not at all. I’m not sure to make of this. I can see positives, but it is outweighed by the misrepresentation on the label.

Beltane Witbier
On tap @ Hashigo Zake. Expecting an easy drinking intro for the evening this was a big let down. Clear and yellow (rather than cloudy) the aroma was sour and spicy. Notably fizzy even before samplying. In the mouth spritzy, sour, thin with a spicy aftertaste. My wife (who ordered this) insisted the barperson had poured the wrong pint - but we were wrong. Couldn’t finish it and my better half cleansed her palate with a weizenbock.

Aroma: Wheaty, but with sour lambic bretty smell. Apperance: Quite light, pale and clear. Looks like (bit cloudy) pilsner, where as wheat beer usually is cloudy. Taste: Huge lemon flavour followed by bit of bretty sourness and little banana and bitterness at the end. Palate:medium body, quite light texture, not too fizzy - pretty soft and the sour flavour stays in the mouth for long time. zesty bitterness to finish Overall: Quite interesting beer, I couldn’t drink much for the first time, but once I got used to the sourness I can enjoy it. However the beer make me feel like I’m drinking concentrated lemon juice.

On tap at Hashigo Zake This is very complex: hybrid lambic- wheat beerish ciderlike . . . . and nice. Very complex. Pale almost champagne colour and minimal head and lacing, fruity and spicy nose and a little spritzy. Quite sour without being lemony sour and fruity. Good body without being heavy. Finish is surprisingly quick and clean. Wonderful.
