To Øl Black Malts & Body Salts Black Coffee IIPA 3.4
Shared 12.7 oz. bottle. Pours almost black with a two-fingered tan head that has good retention. Solid lacing. Nose is cocoa, roasted malt, with a floral, hoppy scent. Taste is coffee, chocolate, alcohol, salt, and roasted malt with citrus notes. A plethora of flavors; interesting, to be sure, but a rather unorthodox combination. Finishes with strong dose of pine/coffee bitterness. Medium to full-bodied.

Aroma: interesting mix of hops and chocolate; intriguing; Appearance: black with tan head; nice lacing; Taste: rich, hoppy with a somewhat odd taste that I can’t place -- salt? Palate: heavy body with sharp/bitter aftertaste; Overall: good but it doesn’t quite work for me. Wouldn’t buy again.

With Z, on the patio on a rainy Saturday night, pours a pitch black color with a nice Java head . Nose is milk chocolate with a confluence of sourness. Taste is sweet milk chocolate with oak and punctuated with nice tartness ... a very nice mix of flavors. Finishes on the same tasting notes, dryly with a moderately long finish. A nice puppy indeed . Quaff Score 8 / 10

Just awful, far far too hoppy for me, it’s strong at 17% but I take no pleasure in drinking, it’s supposed to be an unadulterated director’s cut of the original so it’s going to be very odd but I wouldn’t drink this again.

Pour at RateBeer Best Festival. Actually, joet gave me half of his glass in the hotel lobby after the fest. This is a beast. Somewhat hazy orange appearance with a thin tan head. Aroma is sweet, cookie-like with some citrus and bland/dull hops. Pretty intense booze in the mouth though I guess it isn’t the booziest 17% beer I’ve had. The hops seemed awfully faded in the flavor with just some dull bitterness to go along with a little pine. Doughy, biscuity, and quite sweet in the mouth. Gimmicky and just ok. I’ve never been a big fan of these style beers for what it’s worth.

Slightly hazy golden color with white head. Aroma jumps at you with lime and tea leaves but underneath these you can also find some belgian yeast esters. Taste starts also with citrus fruits and tea character. Slightly acidic at first but gets very balanced towards the middle taste. There are also some hops, slightly grassy and "green", which give a light bitterness. Body is on the light side but still feels smooth. Carbonation is crisp, aftertaste follows quite dry. Really nice overall. It’s citrusy, has a pronounced tea character and a very pleasant mouthfeel.

Pours black with a tan head. Roasted and sweet, thick and sticky. Some funk from the wood, and a dry, vinous finish from the muscatel. Nice, but I can’t help thinking it would have been better aged in a bourbon or rum barrel... not sure the tannin notes compliment the beer that well.

Bottle. Cloudy pink with an almost white head. Interesting aroma with lemon, cherries, wheaty funk, raw celery, hint of boot polish. Not unpleasant but odd. Very thin and quite sour with cherries, grapefruit, apricot stones. Minor vegetable and Dubbin notes - again, they’re somehow not unpleasant. Both bitter and astringent at the end. Not sure that this has worked but it’s drinkable.

6.3%ABV.  Wheat Ale. Tapped out a gold Amber. 10ºSRM. Nose has sweet milk and is remiscent of the pink milk left behind after you munch the crunch berries.  It’s sweet, but has a nice lactic depth to give it some body.  Otherwise there are sweet ripe fruit aromas of apricots.  Interesting note is that out of the bottle you get a lot more citrus brightness in the nose with yellow grapefruit and oranges. Mouthfeel is soapy.  There are pale malt flavors of malt shakes, pale wheat toast, cookie dough and raw peanuts.  Overall a  palate that rides very sweet.   This brew also boasts a full-bodied malt palate with nothing beery or lager-like.    Hops have a pleasant spiciness, being closest to Thai basil, which is sweet and spicy.  Finish is abbreviated and clean. A good effort.  Makes it to the list. Goes on Favorites List!

As the beer warms there are some nice funky lactic barnyard floor aromas make their appearance. Mouthfeel is sudsy. Carbonation is perfectly just there. There is opening sour and the the clouds part to reveal really full bodied matly flavors of taffy, Maltersers and barley bread. Some nice funk to the palate. Then the bitter cuts the barnyard stomp short. There are moderate bitter flavors in the finish, which is mild and brief.
