2.9 Port 44 Old Boot A blended mix of the tail end of other batches of beer at the brewpub. Clean lines. Beer pours medium brown, with medium head retention. Aroma is malty but complicated due to the blend; taste is similarly confusing - a bit too much going on, but that’s what you expect from a blend of 4 distinct beers! Finish is earthy with a creamy sort of lingering toasted and barnyard sort of taste. Glad I tried it, interesting experiement, but not a brew I would favor at this stellar pub! 4.3 Port 44 Hopocalyptic XX IPA On tap at Port 44 in Newark; clean lines. Beer pours dark golden brown and translucent with a hoppy, citrusy overtone. Medium head retention. Hoppy attack, balanced very nicely by a smooth transition to an even-keeled body. Not too malty, just enough to bridge the hoppy start to grapefruit, clean finish. Very nice IPA, and strong enough to give you a run for your money! Friday, June 3, 2011

2.5 Port 44 Old Boot From tap at the brewpub. Pours clear and golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is hoppy and fruity, slight citrusy and fruity. Butterish initial flavoured. 3.6 Port 44 Ziegelstadt Alt On tap at the brew pub, Port 44 in Newark, NJ. Clean lines. This alt was aged for more than 6 weeks at lagering temperatures. Beer pours a medium brown color, still a bit hazy, though that should settle out over the next few weeks. Not much head retention. The mouthfeel is medium carbonation, with a straightforwardbut mild attack. Light maltiness gives way to a nice, nutty middle, and a clean, mildly bitter finish. This beer really drinks like a nice session ale. A nice addition to the menu here. Friday, May 6, 2011

4.2 Port 44 Black Bodhran Irish Stout On tap at the brewpub, Port 44, Newark, NJ. Clean lines. Beer pours black and opaque, with a dark tan head, good head retention. Attack is smooth and creamy, with immediate notes of toasted malt and barley. Mouthfeel is a bit more lively, with some earthy and coffee overtones, and a nice dry finish. Excellent stout! Great springtime drinker’s stout, especially in time for the season :-) I even like this one better than the ’original’ stout variety at Port 44 (the Longy’s Black Market Stout). 3 Port 44 Penalty Kill Pilsner On tap at the brewpub; Port 44 in Newark, NJ. This is the first lager beer brewed in their system. Beer pours unfiltered & hazy, with a lively head. Aroma is of citrus - lemon, with a bit of orange too. Attack is citrusy, not all that pilsner-like. Simple, middle-of-the-road body. Lively mouthfeel with a clean, dry aftertaste. I think this brew will become much more pilsner-like (and better) with time. Thursday, March 3, 2011

3.4 Port 44 Cailleach Scotch Ale Draft from the Brewery. Served in a pint glass. Scotch ales are usually hit or miss for me, but I liked this one because it was more on the mild side; I can’t stand overpowering scotch ales. A sweet, malty beer with bread notes and a medium body. Enjoyable and not overwhelming. Sunday, February 6, 2011

2.4 Port 44 Goldfinch Ale Pint from the Brewery. Overall, a weak ale. Subtle lemon and spice notes in a mostly flat delivery. I didn’t really get much of a hop bite while the malts in this beer were overpowering and made this beer kinda boring. This was my least favorite that I tried for the night. 3.3 Port 44 Longy's Black Market Stout Pint from the Brewery. Pours black with a dark brown head. This stout has all the makings of a great stout (toasted hops/malts, smooth finish, etc) but there is something strange about this beer. Believe it or not, it has a strong meat flavor to it, almost like fried bacon. All the pieces in this beer don’t really come together in unison, but this isn’t bad. Sunday, February 6, 2011

3.8 Port 44 Devil's Red Pint from the Brewery. This was the best of the bunch from my visit. Pours a clear ruby with a tan head. Grapefruit and cherry notes blended with the smooth, vanilla like flavor from the malts. Like crispy hops bite. Well balanced and a great session beer. Sunday, February 6, 2011

4 Port 44 Cailleach Scotch Ale Draft. Pours brownish amber with a beige head. Malty sweet aroma with a light roast and toasted bread. The flavor has toasty and sweet malts, lightly roasted malts, earthy notes, and just a touch of peaty smoke. Solid. Sunday, January 30, 2011

4.6 Port 44 Cailleach Scotch Ale Beer pours a charcoal color, dark, with an off-white head. Aroma is slightly hoppy, slightly toasted caramel with a malty sort of smell as well. Attack is slightly sweet malt with a coffee overtone, but the maltyness minimizes any bitterness - no alcohol overtone here, surprising for such a high-octane winter ale. But make no mistake, it’s high-octane! Smooth mouthfeel and delicate on the palate, again surprising for 8.4% ABV, and a clean finish. Very unique Scotch Ale, worth a trip to Port 44 by itself. 4 Port 44 Newark Bay IPA Floral hop aroma, cascade hops and perhaps another variety. Quick, crisp hoppy attack that is pleasantly and surprisingly followed by a medium-malt body - and a clean finish. Pour is golden-amber, unfiltered, with a moderately creamy head. A creative and unique IPA, great for at least a few in a sitting! Tuesday, January 25, 2011

3.7 Port 44 Newark Bay IPA Draft. Pours orange with a white head. Piney and floral hoppy aroma with pale malts and a light citric note. The flavor has piney and citric hops with some lightly sweet malty notes. Solid. Sunday, January 23, 2011

3.1 Port 44 Pomegranate Wheat Draft. Pours amber orange with an off white head. The aroma is wheaty with some fruity sweetness. The flavor has a wheaty base with a nice fruity sweet note that balances nicely. Not overly sweet. Pretty good. Sunday, January 23, 2011

3.2 Port 44 Siren's Wheat Draft. Pours hazy orange with a white head. Wheaty aroma with some light floral hoppy notes. The flavor has a wheaty base with some light sweetness and a floral hoppy hint. Solid for a wheat ale. Sunday, January 23, 2011

3.8 Port 44 Pomegranate Wheat A variety of Port 44’s Siren Wheat, where some of the wheat was combined with pomegranate juice and kegged to produce a unique fruit beer. This one, to me, is an improvement of the basic Siren Wheat as it adds some of the fruity overtones that I like in a wheat beer. Yet, this is not an overly sweet beer - really a nice combination. The color is a dull red, with a off-white head. The pomegranate really brings out more of the bread taste and subtle carbonation of the wheat. A nice idea. Thursday, January 6, 2011
RGDave |
3.2 Port 44 Siren's Wheat This one pours beige, with a subtle head, and less overtones than most wheats that I have tried. Unfiltered goodness! But this beer started out very young, and ended up with less flavor than I like out of a wheat beer. It came out as a light-bodied beer with a mild finish. Thursday, January 6, 2011

4.3 Port 44 Goldfinch Ale A solid ’flagship’ beer for the new Brewpub. This was the first American-owned, Newark-brewed beer in a generation and it was awesome to be there for the first pour! This one pours golden as the name suggests; unfiltered (like all beers here so far) and with a lively, large-bubbled head. It is a medium-bodied beer with minor hop notes, a bready but crisp taste with some minor citrus overtones, and a clean finish. A nice go-to for regulars. Thursday, January 6, 2011

4 Port 44 Longy's Black Market Stout This beer looks like a perfect stout; pours black with a beige, almost khacki head and nice toasted coffee aroma. You can’t see through it, and the head is generous but not overwhelming. CO2 pour. It is a chocolately sort of malt, sweet at first, and toasted at the end, with a gentle mouthfeel and toasted finish. Nice beer drinker’s stout. Thursday, January 6, 2011
RGDave |
4.3 Port 44 Catskill Hop Beautiful, full hop aroma that came with a perfect pour; stronger wet-hopped ale (7.5% ABV) with a warm, dark golden harvest ale color. The boquet sets you up for a full, malty body that perfectly balances the hoppy character; nice bitterness on the end is complemented by a clean finish. A real treat! Too bad this one is seasonal! 4 Port 44 Goldfinch Ale Tap. Golden beer w/ a light head. There has been a couple versions of this beer brewed already at Port 44 and they’ve been very similar to each other. The sooner you get to a fresh batch the better. Overall an EXCELLENT beer. Thursday, January 6, 2011
