The Commons Biere de Garde
A robust, dry and yeasty nose. The woodiness of the yeast with a sweet burst of malt and a very dry finish. Very rustic.

The Commons Urban Farmhouse Ale
750mL bottle, from Spring 2016, drunk 7/16/16.
Big, lasting, white head tops a sparkling, peach-nectarine-golden with light copper tints and a good clarity.
Very lively yeast in the nose shows pretty straightforward white pepper, nectarine, apple, a touch of bubble gum and nuttiness. Fresh though and quite charming, even if not every single note is quite the pinnacle of saison brewing. Spicy/peppery hops show respect to tradition, with a big honey-caramel kick on the finish as the malts enter the picture. No alcohol or flaw.
Malty, with lots of honey, light caramel and a big bready character. Tons of carbonation, though mostly tight and natural make for a lighter perceived body than what it actually is and as the carbonation settles and the beer wears on, I do think it gets just a bit too malty and sweet. Still, there are plentiful enjoyable esters and phenols to behold with soft, spicy hops lingering and no alcohol or flaw.

The Commons Pils
Draft at SB. We kicked the Stivo, and the managers called a huddle of customers at the bar. Do we put on the Commons next, or the Happy Little Clouds? Ordinarily, HLC would win hands down, but a couple of us were curious to try this one. Turns out Iíd already had it a year and a half ago, but hadnít rated it. Bad RBian, bad. Rate the pils. Rate the pils or else it gets the Chelada again. Anyway, here we go. Pours a crystal clear medium gold with tons of steadily rising nucleation columns (not quite columns, but, still, so active) and a frothy platinum-blond head that sticks around forever. Forward grassy nose--the very picture of the warm summer meadow, the heath, where possibility seems boundless. Oh, shut up. Itís grassy. Whatever. Creamy medium body with lively (as expected) carb. Lightly toasty mid palate. Grassy notes all over the place. Mild dry finish. Doesnít have quite the clarity or pop of the two pils surrounding it, which perhaps shades it in an unfairly unfavorable light. Itís essentially flawless, but the pils race isnít getting any easier on anybody. Being clean isnít enough anymore. You need great design to carry a pils across the finish line, even on an 84F day in the PNW.

Bottle share, thanks to Toby. Pours a reddish brown with a thin ring of beige cap. Aroma is mostly fruity sweet with a bit of malt. Just the faintest hint of being a farmhouse ale. Good flavor of sweet and sour fruity bits, a little funk. Finished dry and a bit tart.

The Commons / Modern Times Good Problems
Bottle @ Mikeís House. Hazed golden-orange beer with a tall white head. Not sure I get a ton of the grape here, but definitely something a little "different" about this beer. Slightly earthy, some floral notes, and a bit of fruit skins. Very full carbonation. Light malt flavors of cracker and biscuit. Just a touch of yeast and cracked pepper. Maybe a very, very light acidity. Not bad.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a deep dark reddish amber with a small beige head. Aroma brings out dark fruits, some toffee and bready malts. Flavour brings out a good mix of Belgian yeast, dark fruits, toffee and bready malts. Fair amount of heat showing to this too, but it creates a nice warming effect rather than detracting booziness. Nice stuff - better than average for American dubbels.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Dark amber color, clean. Moderately sweet, but lean, it has enough caramel and malt flavor, quite good, the alcohol is not apparent, the bitterness is on the low side; knowing that there is star anise, I guess that the light soap touch comes from that, while the cacao leaves a light coffee trace that is perceived only with the first sips.
Not bad, solid, although, of course, without the harmony or depth of true Belgian beers.
