3.6 Fellows Old Fellow Burton Ale Dark brown, opaque and very, very flat. Aroma of soy, brandy, soot, espresso. Bittersweet taste with strong sarsaparilla and cinnamon notes. Finishes sour with a flat oily body. Some more apothecary notes in the finish. Very drinkable and with surprising complexity. Wednesday, May 24, 2017

3.1 Fellows Old Fellow IPA Gravity cask at the 2016 Cambridge Beer Festival. Golden/honey brown, clear with a bit of white head around the edge of the glass. Smell has papaya with some basement odours... not what I expected. The astringent bitterness of the taste lifts it a bit. Bitterness stays throughout the long finish. A very English IPA at a very North American intensity. Sounds good on paper but doesn’t quite work in my opinion. Worth trying all the same. Wednesday, May 25, 2016

3.4 Fellows Old Fellow Double Stout Gravicask (CWAF2015) Slightly sour aroma, a rich roast, but a little bit ashy and dry. Pleasant stout, but just a bit flawed I dare say. Anna gets plums. On the fruity side, I get blackcurrant in the aroma. The finish is a lovely rich burnt roast, which makes it worthwhile. Nice. Wednesday, July 15, 2015

3.5 Fellows Old Fellow Double Stout Gravity cask at Cambridge Winter Ales Festival 2015. Very, very dark brown. Nary a sliver of light getting through this little chap. Smells of naked alcohol, single estate dark chocolate, charcoal. A shadow of Scandinavian salt liquorice. Bittersweet, chocolately and slightly herby taste. Spicy bitterness in the finish. Bitter hop aftertaste. Flat and a trifle sludgey. A tongue-coater of a stout. Dangerously drinkable. Friday, January 23, 2015

3 Fellows Full English Gravicask (CWAF2013, Thurs) A bit watery. Very fruity, a little sharp. Dryness and sharpness sum up the palate. Finish, however, is fruity. But too drying. Monday, January 28, 2013

2.8 Fellows Full English Cask conditioned at Cambridge Winter Ales Festival ’13. Amber with no head. This had a staleish note to it initially, malty dry and slightly bitter yes, but musty too. Probably not at its best. Saturday, January 19, 2013

2.5 Fellows Pepys' Ink Cask conditioned at Cambridge Winter Ales Festival ’13. Black with no head. This was very fruity tart from the off, dry and with a chalky, mineral flavour to it. A really odd beer and unfortunately not to my taste. Saturday, January 19, 2013

3 Fellows Balmy Fellow On cask at the Ely Winter Beer Festival, 2012. Pours a golden colour with a thin white head. A yeasty aroma with caramel and alcohol. Similar flavours with mild carbonation and a dry finish. Mildly bitter. OK. Saturday, February 18, 2012

3.1 Fellows Balmy Fellow Cask (CWAF2012, Friday) Copper. Mineral aroma. Slightly sweet old ale fingerprint too. Major minerals in the mouth. Slightly drying, more so as you drink it. Does have some roast that builds. Disappointed me a bit, the minerals were too imposing. Thursday, February 16, 2012

3.3 Fellows Jolly Fellow Cask, gravity, at 34th Bedford Real Ale and Cider Festival. Served to be by a lady whose name tag informed me her surname was ’Mudd’. I really wanted to say, ’So, your name is Mudd.’ But I didn’t dare, and it would have been quite offensive. Reddish amber. Buttery aroma and slightly buttery malt taste which I have to confess I rather like. Sharp bitter finish. Saturday, October 8, 2011

3.8 Fellows Burton Snatch On cask at the 10th Annual Townhouse Beer Festival in Ely. A golden ale with a lacy white head. Lovely hoppy aroma of fresh cut grass and pine. Big pine flavour with grassy hops, hay, toffee and caramel. Quite resinous and a little dry. Monday, July 11, 2011

2.9 Fellows Festival Mild Cask conditioned gravity dispense Northants Beer Festival 2011. A chestnut coloured beer with an off-white ring of head. Rum and rasin notes in the over sweet nose. Sweet licorice in the mouth with rum and raisin again. A bit ott with too much sweetness and alcohol really. Monday, May 30, 2011

3 Fellows Clever Fellow Cask (Cambridge Winter Ale Festival 2011) Bright orange. Must be mushrooms in my head! Not much aroma, a bit of general hops. Slightly watery taste, again just nondesctipt bitter hops and a bit bland. Doesn’t get better on swallowing. Mushroom comment implies this might not have been on top form. Thursday, March 31, 2011

2.9 Fellows Gulping Fellow Gravicask (Cambridge Winter Ale Festival 2010) Mid orange, loose head. Mildly lactic aroma, but mostly grainy. Slightly sweet, shrooms, minerally taste. Palate drying and acidic perhaps, chemical. Felt that there was a good beer behind the flaws, though, and rated it a little charitably. Saturday, March 26, 2011

2.6 Fellows Gulping Fellow Cask (gravity dispense). Beer #7 at Cambridge Winter Beer Festival on 21 January 2011. Amber colour. Something not quite right here. Green apple and moist, worty malt suggested this wasn’t in top nick. A shame because this was my first sighting of this new brewery. Flagged for re-rate. Default score in the meantime.
