Pours a crystal clear golden color, fast fading white head. Nose is lovely, I get lots if orange peel, a hint of juniper and the gorgeous lemon myrtle. Flavor is similar, a little wheaty, lots of botanicals, dry, spritzy carbonation, lovely. Adding a dose of gin is really interesting, and amplifies the flavors even more. Lovely, and a pretty crazy but tasty concept.

Doctors Orders Tonic
Can 18/3/18. Pours a pale straw with thin white head. Aromas of orange pith, coriander, wheat, pepper and fruity sweetness. Fruit juice to begin, wheat to finish, with gin attributes through the middle (coriander, pepper, bitter juniper). Good carbonation. These notes relate to beer being drunk straight. For the second half I add gin and ice to the the glass. I like gin and loved it in the beer. The ‘tonic’ took a subtle backseat and showed the gin off.

Poured a translucent dark red-brown with a billowing tan coloured frothy head that diminished to a 1cm cap that remained throughout. Laced well. Carbonation low, slow and coarse. Aroma of coffee, sweet syrup and roasted malts; no real hops presence. Taste of slight citrus at the front followed by quite bitter coffee and roasted notes; no real hops bitterness. Medium body. Smooth and very dry with very bitter coffee on a lingering finish.

On tap at Union Hotel, Newtown (from notes - 2013). Pours a murky aqua green with a thin head. Kind of looks like toxic waste or paint mixed with turpentine. Aroma: citrus, wheat, grapefruit, yeast, funky notes. Taste: citrus, grapefruit, yeast, grass, mild herbal flavours. Medium to full bodied. Moderate carbonation. Mild tartness that lingers on the palate. Not pleasant to look at, but was quite a decent beer.

Strawberry stalk lingers in an effervescent light brew with a touch of bergamot. In fact, this has the essence of gin hiding inside its bubbles. Honest and pleasing, I could easily drink a couple on a warm summers day, then rest in fields sucking on the tips of long grass waiting for the dappled afternoon light to fade and another sip, for me, just divine.

Doctors Orders Nucleus
Day 17 of my advent calendar 2017.
Into a tulip, chilled. Must say it looks the business. Honey orange and radiant. Misted by minute proteins in suspension. Alive with only a single, fine conditioned stream of carbonation lifting up a rocky and fluffy white cloud to a good inch and a half. Strong Belgian yeast bite against stewed stone fruit notes on the nose. Aroma is quite sweet, sticky and robust more like something of higher strength aided by spicy phenols and sweet sherry. As expected it is quite fruity and sweet with very pronounced stewed plum and apricot which dominates over all else. Quite tangy, tart and sharp in the back with a raspy bitterness moving into a smoky, phenolic finish. Quite rounded with a lot of residual sugars. I reckon they could have got a point or two more in ferment had they left it alone a few days longer. As it warms it becomes cloying. A note of berry bubblegum builds. Not altogether a tight unit. And I was expecting something completely different as to this. Still, it punches above its meagre 5.5% ABV. My first Doctor's Orders so I look forward to trying more!!! 375mL can from Carwyn Cellars. P/D 30/08/17 Slightly hazy ornage body, dense white head. Hop forward - orange, grapefruit, woody spice, tempered with faint yeasty phenolics & bready, cereal malts. Medium-full body, bit of slick chewiness from the oats, reasonable carbonation. Hoppy once again, fairly bitter, spicy, pine, cereal notes, dry finish. Not a bad APA - other bits & pieces could be overlooked.

Can. Clear orange with a dense white head that laces well. Aroma of light dough, oranges, vanilla, cloves. Smells very standard Belgian Blonde, but it turns out to taste rather less sweet and first and a fair bit more bitter at the end. Has a lot more presence than 5.5% would suggests.

Poured a crystal clear golden amber with a one- to two-finger bright white dense foam head that retained very well but laced poorly. Carbonation moderate to high, average and fine to coarse. Aroma of spicy yeast, tropical fruits (pineapple) and hints of citrus. Taste is bitter hops with yeast spiciness. Light body. Smooth with a bit of a spicy tartness on a moderately long finish. Different, a bit weird.

330mL can from Beer Love. PKD 28/04/17 Rather good looking - near-black brown, holds a dense tan head throughout. 5 Enjoyable aroma - browned toast, burnt nuts, coffee grinds, dark toffee with an appreciable measure of piney, citrus hop in the mix. 7 Full bodied, dries out a bit without being overly astrigency, lowish carbonation. 3 Flavours work well - cococa, burnt toffee sweetness, black coffee, plenty of nutty & toasty character lingering with hop notes of ripe stonefruit, cooked citrus & woody sap. Fairly bitter to finish, hops keep hanging on. 7 Yeah this is good - rather drinkable above everything! 14 3.6

I’ve never been a huge fan of Rhubarb but subtle flavours hidden within this wheat Gose makes it quite enjoyable. Quite bready with a little saltiness this one is good for after a long day working on the veggie patch in your hippy commune.

010617. Can from Greenslopes Cellars. Great beer for the first day of winter. Not quite a Stout and not quite an IPA but has the best of both. Pours black with a coffee coloured head. Dry finish with a good combination of hoppiness and maltiness. Another great beer from the good Doctor.

Tap at the Boilermaker House, Melbourne. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is roasty malt, grassy hop. The flavour is moderate to strong bitter with a crisp smoky malt, caramel, grassy, fruit hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Stout or Black IPA? More of a Black IPA for me... but the brewer intent is a hoppy stout.

Pours a reddish to dark brown colour with a light tan coloured head. There is a slight aroma of roasted malt. The taste is of hops and very little of the roasted malt comes through. The beer is considerably bitter for a stout with the bitterness long lasting on the palate. Overall a disappointing ’stout’. It is not heavy enough and is more like a dark IPA.

140417. I was expecting a little more than I got out of this beer and I was a little disappointed with it, even though it was an okay beer. I have come to expect big things from Doctor’s Orders Brewing and this beer was just a little underwhelming. I think it lacked a bit of tart bitterness and saltiness that I normally find in a Gose. Deep white head above a gold coloured beer that is reasonably clear . Dry finish without the sourness that I was expecting. I had this beer in a can purchased from Greenslopes Cellars.

As Electrolyte Serum. Can, 4% ABV. Cloudy straw-coloured with a creamy white head. Wheaty, briny, mildly funky and earthy covers the aroma - it’s clear enough there’s rhubarb in there if you know, but I don’t know whether I’d have picked it otherwise. Light bodied, slightly slippery. Tartish - just a funky wheaty twang really - but there’s a kefir like feel that makes it for me. gentle rhubarb, almost no bitterness, moderately salty finish. Refreshing.

Can. Almost clean pale gold with a good inch of white head. Fine bead. Aroma really a tonic-like wit, with juniper, citrus peel and bark. Soft texture, medium carbonation. Sweet and plain apart from the spices, with no wheaty tang or tonic-like bite. The woody spices come through at the moderately bitter finish though. Pleasant enough, a bit of a let down after the aroma.
