Crooked Stave Nightmare on Brett (Raspberry)

Crooked Stave Motif Reserva
Sours draw more comparisons to wine all the time. Motif Reserva is one of those beers that seems to welcome such comparisons. It’s tart, dry, and fruity. Hell, the fact it’s aged in Sherry barrels doesn’t hurt anything. Motif Reserva brings together an odd medley of flavors. Cherry, green grape, wood, caramel malt, vinegar, tart strawberry, and earth. It pours brown and smells funky. Like all of Crooked Stave’s beers, Reserva is predictably well-made... and expensive. If you like your Sours acidic and bone-dry, this one’s certainly worth looking for.

Slightly sweeter and pinier, less cat pee and lemon but they’re still there. Can’t articulate what the difference is between the noir and regular. Both are good not great, and I like the regular a touch better.

I’ve been sitting on this for a while, but the hops are still very much up front and center. Sour aroma with dark malt and lemon. Flavor is a little heavy handed with the lemon and cat pee covering up the darker malts. Pretty sour. Good.

Crooked Stave Colorado Wild Sage
375ml bottle. August 2015 bottle date. Appearance: Light golden, mostly clear, with a light white foam cap. Aroma: Brett earthy funk dominates with moderately strong lemongrass and a bit of herbal sage. Taste: Strong acidic tartness, with and underlying earthy brett funkiness and a fresh lemon zest. Moderate bitterness with a touch of sage that shows up in the swallow. Mouthfeel: Light to moderate body with high carbonation. Finish: Dry and earthy funk that lingers. Acidic and lemon character leaves a puckering tartness. Overall: Awesome beer. Earthy funkiness and acidic lemon dominates the overall profile of the beer. I detect very little sage character, more apparent on the swallow

Crooked Stave Flor d’Lees
Bottle from Johns. Pour is cloudy straw color with minimal head but lots of small, lively, twinkling bubbles. Aroma is earthy and funky with light stone fruit, lilac, dirty water, brett, and lemon. Flavor is funky up front for just a moment before a wave of lemony tartness rolls in. The sourness covers the tongue but does not linger long. It ends with a quick salty kick and transitions back into dry, yogurt funk. The finish is dry, lightly floral, and faintly farmy. Lively palate pokes the taste buds for increased sensitivity. This is just really nice.

Enjoyed on tap at Crooked Stave Taproom in Denver, CO while on vacation. Appearance is a dark gold with a moderate white head. Aroma isn't too apparent, light hop profile and light funk. Taste is mighty fine, hopiness shines through in the flavor and the tart factor is subdued but apparent. This is a good one for sure!

Crooked Stave Surette Provision Saison
Enjoyed on tap at Crooked Stave Taproom in Denver, CO while on vacation. Appearance is a juice like cloudy dark gold with a prominent white head. Aroma smells tart with notes of oak, light stinky cheese. Taste is overly sour in the best way possible with a fantastic crisp malt finish that nicely lingers for at least two seconds. I haven't had a beer like this in a while that knocks you back after first sip. At first I thought it was my least favorite of my sampler offerings but now I think it's my most favorite. Great stuff!

Crooked Stave Vieille Artisanal
Enjoyed on tap in sampler form at the Crooked Stave Taproom in Denver, CO. Appearance is a cloudy bright gold with a prominent frothy white head. Aroma is 'earthy' like herbs and fertilizer, not the greatest smell but its faint enough and I can appreciate it. Taste is very strange, like raw hops with sour grape notes, I can appreciate its complexity but I'm not into it.

Crooked Stave Motif Reserva - Leopold Bros Whiskey
November 2015 Bottling
Gusher bottle. Tasted on 5/24/16 from a capped 375mL bottle purchased at Woodland. Pours murky dark brown with a massive, fizzy tan head that slowly recedes to thick and very sticky lace. The nose is dusty cocoa soda, a funky dried fruit prune note, with touches of sweet caramel and whiskey, along with more citrus coming through as it warms. The flavor has some aggressive citrus sourness up front, moving to some of the richer vanilla, caramel, and dried fruit on the mid-palate, finishing with more sourness and dusty funk. The body is medium with very lively, fizzy carbonation, a nice tannic structure, and a long funky sour and dusty cocoa finish.
