09-Jun-13 (750-ml bottle: Purchased for $8.99 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) This beer pours a hazy amber body with half an inch of bubbly, off-white head that settles to a ring. The nose shows lots of toffee and caramel candy along with cocoa powder, some ripe apple and stone fruit. Toasty bread crust, medium-sweet toffee, milk chocolate, cocoa, and caramely candy dominate the flavor. There's a touch of smoky earth, but minimal influence from hops. Medium in weight, light-medium in carbonation, and very soft and delicate on the palate. Overall, this is not a complicated beer, it's just an easy, very tasty and enjoyable quaffer.

Pours extremely foamy. i mean, a glass full of foam VS half a cm of beer. foam slowly turns to beer, but is very creamy and stable, really. Smell is sweet, creamy, caramel, heavy, thick malty undertone. Taste is sharp, bit metallic, caramelly, toasty, ambermalty, light oxidation ( not sure if the bottle is old? I bought it days ago in a bar in France ) Extremely highly carbonated. rather thick mouthfeel. Mild esthery fruityness. Not sure why this gets a 100 in style, as I've had a few BDG before and I'd probably prefer them all over this...

Sample at Kurtkeller 026: Summer-tastic 01 on 06/25/2017. Clear amber color with a medium creamy off-white head that dissipates steadily to a frothy film. Stringy lacing. Aroma of malt, fruit and caramel. Medium body with flavors of roast malt, fruity yeast and malt. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

750 ml bottle purchased at the brewery in August 2014 and consumed the same week. B/B June 2016: Coppery golden. Puffy collar of fine-bubbled foam. Muddled aroma of licorice, cola, papery malt, hay, alcohol, sulfur and metal. Firm carbonation. Soft bodied. Sulfur and alcohol negate much of the lush and bouncy French malt on initial sip. Pronounced note of prune and grape jelly sneak in and mar things. Unrestrained sugars create a medicinal astringency. Simple and sugary finish shows lifeless papery malt, prominent alcohol and and hop-derived peppery accents. There’s just not a whole lot to inspire here. The dreaded grape jelly and cola notes certainly don’t help, but it’s fairly sloppy all around. Metallic, as well, and not the kind of deep maltiness I expect from a direct wood-fired copper kettle. A huge letdown.

Dark golden body, mostly clear. Honey, mild sweet. Simple taste, quite a clean fermentation, warming golden malt base. Not bad at all, but very very classically Northern France styled. (75cl bottle from Estimanet Lille)

Bottle, 0.25l. Cloudy amber brown color with thin creamy tan-like head, yeast residue and soft visible carbonation. Aroma of caramel, dandelion syrup, malt, cloves and grassy hops. Taste starts with light to moderate sweet caramel malt, follows by fruity, yeasty and bready acidity with mild spicy mouthfeel and moderate bitter finish. Medium body, slick texture and fizzy carbonation in palate. Collossal letdown, expected to give rating higher than 4.2...

25cl bottle from the brewery in Bavay, 6.5%. Filtered, clear, with no sediment. Clear gold with a thin white head. Oxidized malt gives it a notebook paper and copper penny character that fits with the "house" character of the other Theillier beers we’ve had on this trip. Sweet, metallic, low bitterness, medium acid, just a tad toffee-ish... light body, thin and watery. Problems here.

750ml bottle from the brewery in Bavay. Clear pale gold, still. Astoundingly awful nose of oxidized copper pennies and notebook paper pale malt. Sweet, lightly toasty in the mouth, watery and thin texture, though the carbonation is somewhat frothy. Lingering metallic finish. Not sure that the brewmaster Micheal knows what he is doing with this beer... I think it’s contracted for a few certain places, and he gave us bottles with somewhat of a grimace, a look to said we should not have high expectations. I admire his honesty.

25cl bottle from the brewery in Bavay. Best by December 2014, guessing bottle date of June 2014, 1-2 months old. Clear sparkling golden amber with a thin white head. Malt featured in the nose is honey-ish, bready, sugary, pastry-like. Hops are faint herbs / grass. Yeast is estery (apple / pear) with faint metallic notes. Medium-light body with creamy carbonation. Sweet and succulent and juicy in the mouth with moderate acidity. Caramelized sugar finish.

750ml from the brewery in Bavay, best by June 2016, guessing June 2014 bottling. Clear orange amber body with a short white head. Malty with grainy notes of seed bread, cara malt, pet food, saccharine. Slightly light-struck. Vibrant mouthfeel, a combination of succulent, nutty malt and peppery / spicy hops. In the mouth it’s sweet with medium-low bitterness and medium+ acidity. Faint touch of alcohol in the finish that doesn’t appear in the nose. Red apple yeast ester finish, with starchy paper notes lingering.

Bottle, 0.25l. Slightly hazy deep amber color with small frothy off-white head, millions of floating body particles and sparkling appearance. Aroma is fruity, yeasty, caramelly and a bit honeyish. Taste starts fresh grainy and fruity sour, follows by thick caramel and toffee malt with warming and spicy mouthfeel, while finish is moderate bitter. Medium to full body, thick texture and lively carbonation in palate. Interesting brew with misterious characteristic that I couldn’t have thought of, but luckily noticed in CanIHave4Beers’ rating: ice tea character...

Pours a reddish orange with a good head and nice lacing on the glass.

The aroma is honey and soft nuttiness, richly malty... but not overly sweet smelling, with mild notes of noble hops and leaf rot.

The flavor is earthy but sweet up front, nutty, with a good balance from leafy and earthy hops and the soft bitterness they exude... some mild honey, with a semi dry finish.

It’s got a remarkable balance going on in both the aroma and the flavor, not many beers pull off a malt character like this one does, my hat is off.

Déçu! !

Appearance: very dark amber, practically brown, has tons of particles floating in it, pours with a very large and dense beige to tan head that also has a lot of particles in it Aroma: plum, raisin, molasses, sweet, faint chocolate, Taste: plum, hint of chocolate, raisin, maybe graham cracker, Palate: above average carbonation, not too much aftertaste, medium mouthfeel Overall: not at all a farmhouse ale to me, more like a Trappist beer, lots of plum, a good beer but others do this style better ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Beautiful amber red body and stable head. Not too bubbly. Luscious warming malts, fairly clean yeast, fruity caramel malts, herbal and well present hops. Very rich without being thick or too sweet. Well bittered, bit medicinal under the warming solid alt base. Can rightfully carry the bière de garde style label, unlike most beers that are placed in this style. Very nicely developed, very well drinkable. Pairs great with food too. Nice!

750mL bottle, pours an opaque dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out lots oak, wet wood, very dry cardboard-like notes, and some farmhouse traits. Flavour brings out notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, fruity accents, wet wood and oak. There is some sweetness to it as well, which is unexpected in the style; though despite the sweetness, it’s still quite dry in the mouthfeel. Medium-to-high carbonation, finishing on notes of wood and spices. Solid stuff, but I actually prefer the blonde version more so.
