Metalman Pale Ale

Can. Pours a dark gold colour with a fluffy white head, aroma is light and hoppy with hints of orange, the taste is medium bitterness with more citrus, with a dry bitter finish.

My Bottom Line:
Caramelized cereals and deeply earthy hop resins sum up this overly sweet IPA.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the dark amber obscurity.
-Residual sugars are too important for the many bubbles to take care of.
-Some orange fruitiness tries to allay the impression of heaviness.
-This is flavorful and well made. Just not in the right decade for an IPA.

On tap at The Magpie Inn, Dalkey.

Can at home in London - picked up at Borough Wines in Hackney. Pours mostly clear orange-gold with a creamy, white head. Grainy malts in the nose, a little apple, ripening citrus. Light sweet flavour with further pale grains, white bread, fine grassy bitterness. Light bodied with massaging carbonation. Finishes with more grassy bitterness, simple pale bread, lightly husky grains, light apple, orange peel. A little too bitter in the aftertaste. So so overall.

28/VI/16 - 33cl can from Geers (Oostakker) @ the pre-AdamChandler-tasting, Erwin’s ponton - BB: 15/XI/16 (2016-706)

Clear dark orange beer, big irregular off-white head, unstable, bit adhesive. Aroma: very malty, oxidized, bit sweet, some orange peel, Madeira, marzipan. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sweet malty start, some honey, bit oxidized, caramel malts, soft bitterness, hoppy. Aftertaste: sweet, caramel malts, bitter, little fruity. Either the date on this can is completely wrong, or the BB-date is way to long after canning. Not a bad beer in se, but this has very little to do with an ipa. And calling your beer an ipa as a craft brewer, creates certain expectations, these days.

28/VI/16 - 33cl can from Geers (Oostakker) @ the pre-AdamChandler-tasting, Erwin’s ponton - BB: 13/VIII/16 (2016-705)

Clear dark reddish brown beer, creamy beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: malty, lots of chocolate, caramel, lots of dried fruits, raisins. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste:s oft smoke touch, pretty roasted, cocoa powder, little sweet, bit sourish. Aftertaste: roasted, soft chilli, some coffee, little bitter, sweet malts. I’d like to see more smoke and more chilli in this beer, then it’d be really good.

Can sample at a tasting at Ben’s place. Thanks Tom L. Dark brown to black with a nice tan head. Aroma of roast, some oranges, some chocolate, coffee. Sweetish flavor, roasty, with coffee, some chocolate, a bit of oranges, and an ashy bitter finish. Medium-bodied. Decent.

Can 15/11/16. This is undrinkable. Completely off Aroma has strong notes of nail polish, mold, bread, wet cardboard, some mango. The taste is much worse with a strong and long lasting bay leaf, chemical and alcoholic bitterness. Worst IPA ever. Extra points for being a craft beer…

Can. Clear amber beer, good cream colour head. Palate is smooth, fairly dry with reasonable carbonation. Caramel malts, sweet with a little cream. Hops are dry pithy, some orange peel. Mild pine. Dry caramelly finish. Somewhat malt forward and a bit dry pithy. Okay.

250 ml. draft @ Moeder Lambics Fontainas. Clear darker shade of orange with a creamy solid white head. Nose is moldy industrial hops, barn & unpleasant mothballs. Taste is weird moldy, big unpleasant herbal mothballs, something dirty, faint butter & big malty & herbal body. Strange mothball bitter profile doesn’t appeal to me, body saves it a bit, taste is not the greatest.

Draught Dense white head over faintly veiled orange beer. Fruity nose with citrus, but also strawberry, somewhat toasted malts. Bitter, bitter vegetables and kumquat. Medium bodied, well-carbonated. Despite the hops, quite clean flavourprofile. Quite good, better even seen its ABV.

The beer has a nice amber color and is crystal clear. The beer pours a rather creamy foam for an IPA> The foam collapses quickly, to leave a nice drape of foam. The looks are a blend between an traditional IPA and an Irish Ale. The smell is typical IPA. There are some strong hop aroma’s, full with citrus fruits and some grass tones. There is again that tiny strawberry-like touch to it. Tree taste is also that of a real IPA. There is a strong citrus hop flavor, giving the beer a nice fruity sweetness, a citrusy sourness and a strong hoppy bitterness. The flavor of the beer is very nice. Its a nice IPA, but not very special. It misses the ’WOOOW’ factor.

The beer has a nice look. The color was a nice amber. The beer has a slight cloudiness. You can see some nice bubbles rising towards the top. The beer pours a nice amount of soft white foam. The bulk collapses, only leaving a thin drape. The smell of the beer is delicious. The smell reminds me a little of a stout. I smell some bitter roasted barley aroma’s and a hint of chocolate. There is also that familiar fruity strawberry aroma, together with a fresh hoppy sweetness. I really wonder what causes that strawberry aroma in so many Irish ales. It gives the beers a sweet, rich smell. The taste of the beer is just slightly less than the smell. There is a lovely citrusy hop flavor, with loads of lemon. There is also a hint of strawberry and roasted barley. The beer has a delicious hoppy flavor. The beer has the right amount of gas. I like it.

Ar- light malt sweetness and hints of baked bread are joined by hop tangerine, apricot and ripe pineapple, Ap- pours a lightly hazed, dark gold with nice white head. Fl- malty sweetness is quickly replaced by hop bitterness. The tropical fruits are present here but this all seems a bit disjointed and a tad worty. Mf- medium bodied, dry / hop bitter finish. Meh Ov- like the nose here but the flavor is just too all over the place. I'd bump the malt complexity and scale down on the hop bitterness. This is way more of a session IPA than a pale ale. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

cask at Franciscan well winterfest
Bright lemony citrus on nose follows through to body, quite assertive in flavour, with almost washing up liquid like lemoniness with a herbal thyme note in behind. The peppercorn isn’t overly noticable however and the cask conditioning means the finish draws on a bit too long becoming cloying. Nice concept that needs tweaking.

hazy dark brown-black with beige lacing, slight citrus on nose which unfortunately doesn’t make it into the taste (spoke to brewster Grainne about it, she confirms it was a function of the carbonation stage at packaging - shame) Moderately carbonated, fairly full in body, cocoa, pine and light floral/citrus perfume
