Bottle @ home. Let me first say this is 3.5 years past the BB date. Deep amber colour wit particles floating. Small off white head with retention. Aroma's: sweetish, oxydized, red fruit. Retronasal about the same, a bit herbal. Flavour is moderate sweet, perfumey. Light medium bodied. Soft prickly carbonation. Slightly dry finish, slowly evolving into light moderate bitterness. Not too bad given the age.

Clear deep amber beer, small pale tan head. Palate is smooth, light, fairly dry and has modest fine carbonation. Thin dry malts, and little smoke and quite a bit of tangy molasses. Mildly tangy dried fruits. A bit dry and molasses dominated.

330ml bottle - thanks Martjoobolut!
Almost watery on first sniff, very oxidised. Later, there’s some raisiny bits too. Looks like a classic barleywine, ruddy, small head. Palate remarkably light too. Taste has a woody dryness and some drying bitter old hops. Seems like it’s aged too much to be young, but not old enough to be properly old. Finish brings a pleasant sweetness back to the experience.

330ml bottle (thanks Mart). Weird looking brown with floaty bits in it, color. Tiny size, yellowish head, stays. Raisins, prunes, fruity, sweet, caramel in aroma. Raisins, hay, newspaper, tingly hops, fruity in taste. Caramel and prunes and yeasty in aftertaste. Soft carbonation. Despite of xtra ageing still feels, bit raw. Drinkable brew.

Klavervier Avercamp Xtra Aged
Dutch barley wine brewed in Belgium. Quite strong gushing. Medium thick, pale greyish beige, regularly shaped head retaining well on the edges and as a thin beige veil on the liquid’s surface; dark chestnut brown colour with ochre edges, hazy. Aroma of candied fig, raisins, brown sugar, damp cellar, dried banana, mouldy leaves, toffee, toasted brown bread, whisky, forest floor, walnut, old madera, vanilla tannins, wet oak and FFF (manure), on the brink of becoming disturbing. Estery fruity onset, fig, raisin and banana sweetness in tune with underlying basic sourishness but sweetness prevails, aided by residual brown sugar; softish carbo, smooth and thick, supple mouthfeel. Caramelly malt sweetness with pleasant nutty edges, nicely evolving from sweet to bittersweet and leading to a satisfying finish of lingering fruit esters and brown sugar sweetness (though not cloying at all), drying wood (tannin-rich), leafy, peppery hops providing sufficient balance against the sweetness, a powdery, notably bready yeast effect and warming, whisky-like alcohol, lasting for quite a long time but not too astringent. Too bad for the gushing and the light off-flavours, would have been a very rich and enjoyable offering otherwise, but the ’damage’ is limited so this can be easily forgiven. I don’t see how this is a true barley wine, though: this is much closer to a classic quadrupel in all respects.
