Rocky River Street Car Pilsner
Pale golden color with a foamy white head. Light nose of grains and alcohol. Sweet beer with strong alcohol, strong hop resin bitterness and maybe a bit of fruit. This has the harshness that i find in these imperial pilsners.

Aroma: Lots of chocolate aromas, but little else. Appearance: Clear, dark amber with rich tan head. Taste: Heavy sweetness with hints of bitterness at the edges. Very rich. Palate: Full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, long finish. Overall: A nice strong chocolate flavor, but there’s little else here. Not disappointing, but not mind blowing, either.

Aroma: Lots of sweet spices--ginger, clover, etc. Appearance: Dark copper color with a rich tan head that leaves a lot of lacing. Taste: Light sweetness shifting to a medium sourness almost instantly. Palate: Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, long finish. Overall: A bit too sour and cloying for a holiday brew. Wretched aftertaste. Very disappointing.

Rocky River Coopers Gold Kolsch
Aroma: Faint hints of malt aromas--caramel and bread--but I almost had to snort the beer to get them. Appearance: Clear gold color with rich white head. Taste: Light sweetness balanced by a light sourness. Palate: Light body, slick texture, average carbonation, long finish. Overall: It’s a well developed beer, but nothing spectacular. Standard issue quaffing beer for a microbrew.

Aroma: Hints of malt and yeast, but very faint. Appearance: Pale straw with white head. Taste: Light sweetness straight through. Palate: Light (no?) body, slick watery texture, soft carbonation, no finish. Overall: Yech...microbrew for the non-micro crowd, I guess. It’s better than having Bud Light on the tap, but still...

Rocky River Sub Chaser Hefeweizen
On draft at brewpub
This was by far the best release at the brewpub. As a general rule it seems that if you stick to the German styles here then you might come out with something that is more than a forgettable pour. I’ll certainly keep that in mind next time I visit.

Aroma / Appearance - The cloudy yellowish base looks almost like diluted fresh squeezed orange juice with a clean white styrofoam cap. Vanilla, ripe bananas, orange peels and dough push this to the bready side of the style without a doubt.

Flavor / Palate - An easy drinker fills the mouth with its fluid presence. Lemons, bananas, and orange pulp enrich the profile and move it from run of the mill to above average. Vanilla custard and honey bookend a well balanced spectrum. I am glad I ordered the 20 ounce pour of this rather than any of the other current drafts.

Rocky River Boondock Spring Ale
On draft at brewpub
Spring may have come and gone. With it hopefully went this subpar offering that is much like the groundhog’s shadow - a reflection of the real thing. Forgettable in most aspects it can safely be passed for the reliable drafts.

Aroma / Appearance - Golden semitransparent liquid fills the glass with sparkling light. A ring of crisp white head adds hints of more depth but fails to deliver. Lemon, grain, and simplistic patio beer aspects are effective but somehow bland and marginal.

Flavor / Palate - Honey, almonds, lemon butter, and a transition of honey nut cheerios are hallmarks of a so-so profile that feels hollow. Light and clean it has less complexity than some beers half the ABV. It is not bad so much as just forgettable and another face in the crowd. The only reason to order it is for a baseline of what Rocky River drafts are like.

Rocky River Hop 2 It
On draft at brewpub
A respectable IPA might not be the best offering from Rocky River but it is pretty par for the course. The good news is that during happy hour prices are less which makes it a bit more palateable.

Aroma / Appearance - A bronze base and vanilla head looks a bit inspiring but do not jump out. Peaches, oak, mango, and fresh bright hops are as fresh as expected. Something feels as if it is missing though even with all that depth.

Flavor / Palate - Bitter with a light blast of citrus, the flavor profile is not that complicated. A refreshing transition teases the promise of more to come. Sadly it never materializes. The finish is the taste of air on a cool autumnal day while walking through deep woods. This one can be skipped if something better is available.
