Hopfenstube Lager

Hopfenstube Weizen
Keg at Hopfenstube, Beijing. Really cloudy straw colour, creamy head. Hugely phenolic nose with bubblegum, tiger balm and slight citric banana. Mid sweet with medium body and rounded, spritzy mouthfeel. Bubblegum and sassafras dominates. Some sugared wheat buns. No bitterness. Correct, but lacking proper soul.

Hopfenstube Lager
Keg at Hopfenstube, Beijing. Cloudy straw colour, small creamy head. Fruity nose. Sweet and very fruity with some caramel and overripe late autumn apples. Medium bodied with rounded mouthfeel and heavy carbonation. Creamy, but diluted with sugar and sparkling water. Lightly fatty finish with low bitterness. Was expecting more.

Hopfenstube X-mas Ale Strong Ale
Keg at Hopfenstube, Beijing. Lightly hazy copper / amber, small head. Fruity caramel aroma. Mid sweet with medium-full body and well rounded mouthfeel. Caramel, notes if grass and prunes. Fairly low bitterness. Could well be a dunkler bock for all I know.

Hopfenstube Weizen
Dark yellow-orange colored, hazy appearance. Huge yellow head. Banana and yeast dominates the aroma with even peppery spices. Thin to medium bodied. Flavor also has yeasty-banana note dominating, some grains also here. Aftertaste has thin hops with yeast still here. One of the best weizens in Beijing.

Hopfenstube Dunkel
Dark brown-yellow colored with little yellow head. Chocolaty, bit fruity aroma with thin roasted touch. Medium bodied. Flavor is more roasted with thin hops, some burnt note here as well in aftertaste, with thin grass. Decent dunkel.

Hopfenstube Dunkel
Draft @ brewpub. Opaque brown with stable head. Chocolate comes late, and the aroma is a bit husky, maybe oversparged. Flavors too. But it’s got nice cocoa bitterness, a dry finish, and is very drinkable. Like the others, better than it seemed at first.

Hopfenstube Weizen
Draft @ brewpub. Uber cloudy, almost muddy, but has a nice stable head. Yeasty but very estery aroma is floral. Slight pedio in the flavors happens to be integrated. Too thick at first, but ultimately smooth and drinkable.

Hopfenstube Lager
Draft @ brewpub. Hazy orange. Head is stable but leaves no lace. Aroma of overripe fruits--banana, plum, peach, pineapple. The flavors are balanced by a nutty, earthy hop that marries the yeast well. A yeasty number but ok, especially due to the toasty finish.

Hopfenstube Dunkel
Cloudy nut brown colour with a thin head. Slightly toasty aroma, maybe with a light fruitiness. Sweet, slightly yeasty, with a toasty/caramel taste and vague chocolate. The finish also gets a bit yeasty. Although it dries out in the finish, something I normally like in a dunkel, it does so without much bitterness. This would probably be better if it dried out with a blast of dark brown sugar if it isn’t going to be hoppy - the malts just aren’t rich enough.

Hopfenstube Weizen
Cloudy with a thick head. The aroma has smokey phenols at first, but they blow off quickly, leaving banana and a hint of wheat...promises a thick and sweet beer. Sweet it is, but with some wheaty acidity for balance. Decent weizen, quite thick.

Hopfenstube Lager
Quite densely sedimented. Thin had. Glowing opaque yellow. The aroma is very bready. The taste is very yeasty, but no so much kit-beer yeasty as just seriously unfiltered. The finish is dry-ish and quite yeasty as well. A pretty good example of the Asian brewpub yeast-bomb helles.
