Monkey Paw Pub and Brewery Reviews

SHIG
Monkey Paw / Marin Funky Sea Monkey 1.3
Draft: Poured a murky toilet with turd brown green, the head was white. The aroma is beach funk, salt and fish guts. Taste was salty, grain, and funky gunk. I can’t believe adnielsen down this garbage juice.

Monkey Paw BEAT L.A.! IPA 3.5
Type: 16-oz. draft Glass: Clear pint glass From: Monkey Paw Brewing in San Diego, Calif. Price: $3.75 Purchased: April 6, 2016 Consumed: April 6, 2016 Misc.: Brewed for the Padres’ season-opening series with the Dodgers Love the name and decided I had to try it once I saw that it was a one-off and I might not get to try it again. Only good things come out of Monkey Paw and I expect nothing less here. Poured a yellow, golden, hazy color with 1-to-2 fingers of frothy, white head when I got it. Great spiderweb, foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Good retention. (Sight - 4.25) Smelled dry hops initially. Also Mosaic, dankness, tropical hops, mango rind, resin hops, Galaxy hops and trash. Reminding me of Modern Times’ Hooloomooloo. (Smell - 3.50) Tasted much better than the nose, getting dank Mosaic, tropical hops, tangerine peel, grapefruit pulp, mango and pineapple. (Taste - 4.00) Light body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, danky finish. (Feel - 3.75) This one grew me on a bit as it went down. I’d have it again. (Overall - 3.75) 3.82 86 B+

Monkey Paw Bonobos IPA/SD Pale Ale 4.6
(En fût au Tiger!Tiger!): Ils appellent ça "San Diego Pale Ale". La plupart des narines, langues et intérieurs de joue appelleraient ça DIPA. C’est San Diego, quoi dire de plus. C’est aussi juteux que résineux, hyper protéiné et amer, vicieusement tropical et sapiné. Bravo terroir.

Monkey Paw / Marin Funky Sea Monkey 2.9
On tap @ brewpub during RateBeer weekend, January 2016. Green poop appearance with a white head. Maybe the least appealing beer I’ve ever seen based solely on appearance. Aroma has garbage, old fruit, yogurt, and is twangy. Salt, yogurt, lactic acid, lemon in the very strange but not all that horrible flavor. Light body. Flavor is pretty decent but the aroma is incredibly unappealing, as is the appearance.

Monkey Paw Dr. Bill’s Extra Special Barleywine 3.9
This English leaning Barleywine has a very nice malt profile - dark fruit, leather, and little hop bitterness. Good body but drinks easy for 10.5%. Nicely done.

Monkey Paw Dr. Bill’s Extra Special Barleywine 3.6
On tap at Capitol Beer & Tap Room. Pours dark golden with a clinging off-white head and a sweet malt aroma. There is a mellow malt and honey flavor with a very dry slightly sour finish.

Monkey Paw / Marin Funky Sea Monkey 3.7
Draft at Urbn. Really unusual. Strange gray tan color with no head. Not much aroma. Just touches of tartness. Flavor was better. With tart and more strangeness on the finish. Slightly salty. Idk. I kinda like this new (to me) style.

Monkey Paw / Marin Funky Sea Monkey 2.3
On tap @ Marin. Opaque brownish cola colored beer with a thick khaki head. Incredibly sour and lemon forward. A lot of salt and green apple, too. Slight metallic quality to it both on the aroma and flavor, which is unfortunate. Gets to be a bit much in all facets. Maybe a little bit of a blackberry note to it? Letting it sit does not do any favors. Becomes earthy, tinny, and incredibly briney.

Monkey Paw / Marin Funky Sea Monkey 2.1
Draft at Marin, served in a flight. Pours a very hazy color that suggests ink spilled into old gold. So it looks the part, but it looks terrible. Small off-white ring for a head. It smells like rancid ocean water, like they walked up to the nastiest part of the shore and dropped a collection vessel in. If you don’t breathe in through your nostrils while drinking, the flavor and palate aren’t bad. Tastes like lemon, sea salt, water, and metal. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a tart, salty mouthfeel. One of the weirdest beers I’ve had. Ever.

Monkey Paw / Marin Funky Sea Monkey 1.1
[1/29/16] Draught at Marin Brewing in Larkspur. Murky gray-ish amber. Aroma of stinking sea food, dirty seawater. Really bad sour flavor with yogurt and salty rotten sea food. Medium-bodied. Really weird and awful. What were they thinking?! Even 1.1 is kinda generous for this one, really nasty stuff.

Monkey Paw Lab Monkey - Simcoe 3.5
On draft at Tap 25. It pours a clear pale yellow gold color with a white head. The aroma is grainy, piney and herbal. The flavor is the same with a hint of lemon cleaner that I got from some of their other IPA’s. Still, a pretty nice hop profile, but without the lemon cleaning fluid notes this would’ve been several ticks higher for me.

Monkey Paw Mandrill IPA 3.5
On draft at Tap 25. It pours a lightly hazed dark orange color with an off white head. The aroma is strong with florals, orange, peach and mango. Fruity and complex. The flavor is full bodied with some caramel, dank, flowers, pineapple and mandarin orange. A little menthol and lemon cleaning fluid in the finish. Not bad.

corby112
Monkey Paw Oatmeal Pale Ale 2.8
Pouts a very dark, hazy golden orange color with deep apricot edges and a one finger frothy white head that slowly settles into a thin lasting ring. Excellent retention with streaks of soapy lacing coating the glass on the way down. Somewhat bland aroma with very faint smoke, floral hops and fresh cut grass countered by pale malt and light fruit sweetness. Biscuit, bread and cracker along with subtle cider-like sweetness. Fuller body than expected with a spicy hop bite that lingers over the sweeter notes and pale malt backbone into a slightly dry finish. Slight dry bitterness with grass, pine needle and subtle resins countered by faint citrus sweetness. A touch of tart grapefruit followed by bread, biscuit and light fruit esters. Some cider, pear and banana with subtle boozy sweetness in the finish. Light and easy to drink but not very interesting.

Monkey Paw I-5 Black IPA With Coconut & Himalayan Pink Salt 4
(En fût au O’Brien’s): Une richesse de guimauve, chocolat, sel parfumé, noix de coco dans une soupe moelleuse et caressante. L’amertume est très fruitée et se prolonge dans la noix de coco. Un satisfaisant breuvage.

Monkey Paw Yeast Farmer Sour Saison - Mango 3.6
On tap at the Ales for ALS festival at Faction. It pours a hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma is very fresh and tart with lemon, tangerine and grapefruit. Tart and citrusy. The flavor is mild but pleasantly tart with more lemon, tangerine and slight hints of mango tropicals. Bready malt backbone. A little floral with some worty grains in the finish. Kind of like a big Berliner. The graininess throws it off a bit though.
