2.7 Salisbury Somer Cask at the Kings Arms, East Stour; orangey gold, thin white head; taste is light fruit, dusty malt, nothing more; very light body / thin; inoffensive, but really only acceptable in a ’ok alchohic beverage to accompany Sunday dinner at rural pub before having to drive home’ kind of way (or cycle 35 miles home, in my case). 3.5 Salisbury Somer Bottle, 500ml. A pale straw colour with a small white head. Aroma of grassy hops, a little citrus. Flavour is hoppy with lemon, grapefruit and a little underlying malt. A herbal note coming through occasionally. A fairly sweet floral finish, no bitterness. Light carbonation. A quite pleasant low ABV golden ale which, unlike many, actually has some flavour. 2.5 Salisbury Somer Bottled 19/04/14. A golden coloured beer with a thick white head and lace. Very dull. A watery aroma. Just a regular old fashioned English bitter feel in the mouth. Plain and not for me. Sunday, May 4, 2014

2.4 Salisbury English Ale Bottle b+M. Dark amber colour bubbly beige head +lacing. Weak aroma of fruits and malts slight bitterness. Taste is simlar. Thin to medium body very flat could do with more carbonation which is a rare thing for bottled beer. Not great. Sunday, January 26, 2014

3.4 Salisbury Sarum IPA Bottle at home in London - picked up at Kris Wines. Well, I went to Salisbury School and our nickname was Sarum, so I had to buy this beer. Pours perfectly clear gold with moderate effervescence and a small, foamy white head that settles into a cream before dissipating fully. Simple, sugary malts in the nose with hints of apple and ripe orange. Medium sweet flavor with further basic, bready malts, touches of caramel, apple, hay. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Somewhat crisp to finish with lingering bready malts, faint dirty hay bitterness, vague citrus notes. Relatively pleasant. Easy drinking. Monday, January 6, 2014

3.3 Salisbury Sarum IPA 500ml Bottle from B&M Newport (Shropshire):BBD on the cap stated end of Aug 14. Poured into a UK pint sleeve on 18 Dec 13. Golden with a thick white blanket of foam for a head. The nose wasn’t as hoppy as I thought it would be, neither was the taste. This is more like a well balanced beer with a good hop content that is kept in check by the semi-sweet malts in the brew. The aroma was on the maltier side of the scale than well hopped, the taste followed that line: very pleasant and easy to drink, just not very IPA-ish in my eyes. Went well with ’White Stilton’ actually. Wednesday, December 18, 2013

2.5 Salisbury Somer 500ml Bottle from B&M Newport (Shropshire): BBD on cap end of July 14, poured into a tall UK pint glass at home on 18 Dec 13. Golden pour, lager like in it’s clarity and colour: a full white head of foam sat on top. The head turned into a wisp and collar after about ten minutes. Semi-sweet aroma: pale maltiness with cornflakes and sugar. The taste leans towards a sweetish lager/pilsner just like the smell: this is a weird bird and I bet it’s a ’Heath Robinson’ sort of affair. Great idea and lots of ’faffing’ during the brewing and blending but an end result that doesn’t add up. Citrus notes begin to appear (the brewery suggests you serve it ’slightly chilled’, so I did) in both the nose and taste as it warmed in the glass. Different and a mish-mash of contradicting smells and flavours: not all bad, but not really for me. Wednesday, December 18, 2013

2.9 Salisbury Sarum IPA Bottle from Nuneaton B&M. Low-headed dusted amber. Not much happening aroma-wise: sultana, honey, beer-stained denim. 2.7 Salisbury English Ale Cask @ Oluthuone Leskinen, Oulu, Finland. Dark and hazy amber/brown beer, frothy cask-head. Grainy, slightly caramelly malt aromas, green leafy and perfumy/green leafy hop notes, some ripe berries and earthy yeast. Grainy malt flavor is quite dry. Finishes woody/herbally bitter and slightly yeasty-sour. Medium body, soft texture, sticky finish. Some good elements, but there might be some wrong with handling. Tuesday, November 12, 2013

3.2 Salisbury English Ale Two hand-pulled pints in the excellent Rai d’Or; a pub/Thai restaurant in Salisbury on 12th Oct 2013. Brown to dirty amber in body colour, the head being a dull white covering. Malts rule the aroma and taste with the hops playing second fiddle in both senses. Not really sweet, but a definite malt lead in all aspects. Medium bodied and easy to drink, especially with the delicate Thai food I had with my beers. I really enjoyed this beer from a brewery I’ve never seen beers from before, hope I bump into another one day. Monday, October 14, 2013

1.9 Salisbury Somer Bottle from Hinckley B&M. Live rate. Pale gold skimmed with white. Muted lemon, honey, shrub and polythene aroma. Smells like a pretty nasty lager. Flavour a mixed and ultimately unpleasant (plastic) bag dominated by mildewed stale water in warm polythene off notes. Some compensating lemon, shrub, lagery malt, corn softness and peanut butter streaks. Bitter linger. Something has gone seriously wrong here and ruined what might have otherwise been a decent Germanic lager/pilsner/GA-type hybrid. As likely to buy another bottle of this as Salisbury City are to take anything but a thrashing away from The Sperrin on Saturday. (Edit: all credit to Salisbury, I’m off to buy a crate in the morning). Thursday, September 19, 2013
