Obed and Isaacís Microbrewery and Eatery Reviews

rubbishystuff
Obed and Isaacís Weizendebockle 3.5
From brewpub. Decent take on the style, more like a strong dunkleweizen, didnít quite have the weight of some weizenbocks, but it was more quaff-able. Slippery mouth feel, banana, clove, peach. Serving: Tap

Obed and Isaacís Jack-O-Ale 3.5
From brewpub. Supposed to be pumpkin ale, but not very pumpkinniny and not very traditional pumpkin spice mix either. Rich warm spices, boozy. Thick mouth feel. Serving: Tap

Obed and Isaacís Blackberry Wheat 3
Draft via crowler - good size slightly pink foamy head, deep red color, big blackberry aroma and flavor, moderately sweet, this is very much a fruit beer, good overall - if you love blackberries you will love this for sure ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Strykzone
Obed and Isaacís Belgian IPA 3.6
10 ounce pour at the brewery. Lots of bubbles on the glass. The beer is amber golden and it has just a little beige foam. First sip is a big tropical fruit blast. That is in the aroma but more so in the flavor. Grapefruit, too, so some bitterness. Belgian notes are a little thin but are there. I like the fruit in this beer and it is big indeed. A lot of flavor for a reasonable ABV.

Obed and Isaacís Saison 3.7
10 ounce pour at the brewery. Nice golden hue with some cloundiness. An off white frothy head ends in blotches. Grain and fruit with somewhat tart bitterness. A little spice. Some coriander? Just a little Belgian yeast and sugars. Tropical fruit is bigger here than most. I happen to like tropical fruit. Good stuff.

Obed and Isaacís Session IPA (Amarillo Hop) 3
Like a lighter version of Isaac in almost all facets but with less complex hops, since only Amarillo. Decent but not worth retrying

Obed and Isaacís Issac IPA 3.5
Decent IPA. Pine and citrus hops, lots of malt balance with a definite sweet caramel note. Pretty good, I was surprised.

Obed and Isaacís The Hefenator Hefe Weiss 4.3
On tap at the source. This was poured into a plastic pint glass. I was skeptical at first, but hereís the rest that might tell you differently. The appearance was a hazy to cloudy burnt orange color. No head or lacing but I figure it was poured into improper glassware so....yeah, no further comment. The smell, wow, thatís exactly what a true hefeweizen is supposed to smell like. Nice amount of speckled clove with the banana esters and a light wheat to it. The taste took those aromas to combine and complete with a light wheat kick on the finish. A sweet wheaty clove aftertaste came in front of the finish. On the palate, this sat about a light to medium on the body with a nice sessionability about it. The carbonation came across good and smooth for the style and for me. Overall, I say this was a hefeweizen true to its German roots. Pure in all that it is. By an American brewer, if only this got out of Illinois, uh oh, Weihenstephaner.

Obed and Isaacís Mother Road APA 3.7
On tap at the source. This was poured into a plastic pint glass. The appearance was a semi-hazy orange color with a bar pourís kind of slim white head that dissipated within a minute. Light lacing speckled the sides of the glass. The smell had a sharp crisp citrus with a roaming pine underneath. The taste copied the smell and gave it a good light piney aftertaste. A light semi-dry finish accompanies the flavor. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body. The carbonation seemed good for the style and for me. Its definitely sessionable and worthy to have with its respected food. Overall, I say this was a well worthy APA to have again.

Obed and Isaacís Coffee and Chocolate Milk Stout 4.2
This was poured into a plastic pint glass. The appearance was a nice looking dark brown close to black color with nice fully clinging lacing surrounding the top of the glass as the head dissipated. The smell had a huge emphatic roasty coffee bean and sweet to roasty chocolate. Light vanilla enters in as it warms. The taste was mainly sweet and roasty smooth leading into a semi - sweet to dry and roasty edged out aftertaste. A light sweet sticky roasty coffee and chocolate rolls right on into the finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionable to sipping aspect to it. Carbonation comes out super smooth and just allocates itself so nicely over my tongue in a rich and subtly smooth sort of way. Overall, I say this was a very well done milk/sweet stout that will hold its own with the bigger ones on the market.

tmoreau
Obed and Isaacís Issac IPA 3.6
32 oz. vessel/1/2 growler brought back from Springfield to share, poured to snifters displaying an orangey gold color, with a modest layer of bubbly, white head foam, and dots & dashes of lacing. The nose was initially dank, then expressive grapefruit, pith, and some lemon, with a mellowing touch of malt sweetness. Medium bodied, with carbonation that was probably livelier on tap, but softened during transport, the taste was similar notes as the aroma, adding moderate, lingering, earthy, citrusy, and rind-like bitterness, and complementary dryness to the finish. Tasty, drinkable brew.

Obed and Isaacís Mother Road APA 3.5
[Growler] Clear amber pour with a pillow of white head on top. Great looking lacing on the glass. Citrus and caramel are the main features in the nose. Grapefruit, lemon zest, toffee, caramel, pine needles and mild grainy notes in the taste. Soapy mouthfeel with lively carbonation. Decent.

Obed and Isaacís Obedís Pride Amber Ale 3
Look: pours Amber in color with an off white head, almost light brown. Very clear. Smell: hot alcohol smell. Sweet toffee and caramel. Slight hop under tones. Taste: slight bitterness with heavy alcohol. Slight sweet taste. Minimal hop flavor. Feel: thin mouth feel. Medium carbonation. Overall: ok beer. Looking for more hop flavor and aroma. First drank: 11/1/14 Obed & Issacs brew pub.

Strykzone
Obed and Isaacís Van Go Go Coffee Porter 3.9
A 10 ounce pour at the brewery. Almost black with a good amount of red. A creamy beige head that becomes blotchy. A layer of foamy lacing. An aroma that is spot on coffee. The feel is creamy and smooth. Roasty coffee notes define this beer. Coffee is everywhere. Just a hint of citrus fruity hop notes are a nice offset. Just a hint of chocolate and grains.

Strykzone
Obed and Isaacís Cascade Rye Pale Ale 3.6
10 ounce pour at the brewery. Copper hued and a little haxy. A smallish beige head. This beer is a nice marriage of the rye and cascade hops. It is soft enough to be a pale instead of an IPA. Citrus, tropical and the classic Cascade flavors. Rye grows toward the finish and adds some spiciness. A beer that works nicely.

Sampled at the brewpub. It poured a clear dark copper color with an average off-white. The aroma was moderate to heavy earthy hoppiness. It had a medium body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. The taste was medium to heavy bittersweet with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of medium to long duration. Very nice.

Strykzone
Obed and Isaacís The Long 9 Black IPA w/ Hop #01212 3.7
Shared pint at the brewery beer garden. Listed as 7.7%. black with a tan head. First sip made me look for berries on the deScription. Currants are there. Those are out front. Hops bring bitterness and some citrus. They grow. A very different take on the black IPA theme. Short of delicious but still quite nice.

Obed and Isaacís Frothbite Winter Ale 3.4
Pint at the brewpub. An opaque beer that has a frothy tan head that leaves nice laving. I smell cinnamon and nutmeg but taste less of it. More fruit in the flavor than spice. Only a bit of bitterness. It finished with a nice balance of fruit andspice with hops that were nice.

Obed and Isaacís Dragon Face Imperial Stout 3.6
At the brewpub. This will sneak up on you. Thin-ish body, some woody oakiness, not a lot, some but not a lot of burbony flavors. A little smoke a little roasted barley. A vanilla sweetness. Nice. Serving: Tap

Obed and Isaacís One Night Stand APA 3.5
At the brewpub. I think this one was made with experimental hops. I canít totally recall. Hops were floral and grapefruit. Some dandelion? Almost IPA like but not as strong. Serving: Tap

rubbishystuff
Obed and Isaacís Zerkle White IPA 3.5
At the brewpub. Iím a little conflicted on whether this is a IPA or a witbier but the IPA qualities stood out much more than the Witbier qualities. The flavors typical of a witbier were very subtle and the hops more bold. Not much cloudy/white appearance, much more pale yellow and clearer. Serving: Tap

rubbishystuff
Obed and Isaacís Belgian IPA 3
At the brewpub. The one I had was 7.4% Very little belgian-y character at all. A decent IPA but the yeast didnít really come through with the fruity-yeasty-floral flavors of belgian ales. Serving: Tap

wxman
Obed and Isaacís Jack-O-Ale 3.3
On tap at the source. Ostensibly a fall pumpkin ale, I didnít get any pumpkin in either the aroma or taste. Pours a clear orange/amber with a thin off white head. Aroma is primarily cinnamon. Taste is sweet caramel malt, spices, and a smoky/whiskey barrel character. Pretty good.

Braudog
Obed and Isaacís Roggenbier 3.6
Draft 5 ozíer at the brewpub. Dark, murky reddish brown. It gives off an almost pumpernickel aroma. Drinks with the same heavily malted bready flavors, the rye a definite component. Different and unique, and quite tasty. (#5222, 8/28/2013)

Braudog
Obed and Isaacís Belgian IPA 3.3
Draft 5 ozíer at the brewpub. Nice, medium-colored beer, almost orange. Yet another very well balanced beer without technical defect. Delivers a sharp acidic bite up front. The continental yeastiness is fairly mellow. Good. (#5221, 8/28/2013)

Braudog
Obed and Isaacís Righteously Rye Pale Ale 2.8
Draft 5 ozíer at the brewpub. Quite musty, and a half shade darker than the big crowd of beers here. After the really good Mother Road APA, this comes across a bit off balance, with an odd almost-rubbery flavor component ... but it can also be labeled even keeled, if that makes any sense whatsoever. Comes across more sweet than hoppy, IMHO. (#5220, 8/28/2013)

Braudog
Obed and Isaacís Mother Road APA 3.9
Draft pint at the brewpub. Definitely my favorite at this fine place ... deep golden, with a good solid sheen and average but strong head. Emits a very good floral aroma, and this drinks with a great American hoppy bite, and firm malt backdrop. Only hit I can give it is itís a bit on the thin side for such a flavorful brew. (#5219, 8/27/2013)

Braudog
Obed and Isaacís Ditzy Blonde 2.4
Draft 5 ozíer at the brewpub. Nothing wrong with this offering. It starts at the same golden color of most of their brews. This is cleanly made, without technical flaw. But it also has virtually no flavor ... very odd. Usually beers taste like something, and arenít always good. But this literally tastes like almost nothing. Guess itís an option for someone who doesnít really like beer. (#5218, 8/27/2013)
Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Braudog
Obed and Isaacís Strawberry Blonde 3.3
Draft 5 ozíer at the brewpub. Almost all of their beers have a very similar golden color, shiny and clean. This one is crisp and cleanly malty with a nice, subtle berry topping. Iím usually not a fan of berry-based, American wheats, but this one ainít bad. (#5217, 8/27/2013)

jandd1983
Obed and Isaacís Blackberry Wheat 3.2
Sampled at the brewpub. It poured a hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma was a little doughy and buttery with some berry flavor and smooth wheat malt. It had a medium body with a small amount of sharp carbonation. The taste was doughy smooth malt. It was good, but just not my style.

jandd1983
Obed and Isaacís Strawberry Blonde 2.9
Sampled at the brewpub. It poured a pale golden color with a small white head. The aroma was of strawberry candy, sugar and maybe a little water and grass. The taste was more of the same. It was pretty sweet. There was a light tartness, some sugar and a strawberry syrup sort of flavor. It wasnít bad, just not my type of beer.

jandd1983
Obed and Isaacís Righteously Rye Pale Ale 3.6

Obed and Isaacís The Long 9 Black IPA 3.3
Sampled at the brewpub. It poured a dark color with an off-white head. The aroma was of sweet malts, chocolate and hops. The taste was a little bitter dark chocolate, coffee, some sort of fruit and hops/burnt malts. Very well done.
