Boone Valley Halligan Porter
At SAVOR 2016. Poured a nearly black color, just a touch of brown in it. Fizzy small head. Aroma was lots of chooclate notes, roasted malts, some light dark fruit character in this. Earthy hops, dark chocolate, roasted character. Very bold.

Guest tap at 515, Iowa. Yep, the source. Clear red color, no head to mention. Aroma is weak yeast with weak toffee notes. This style just is had to get excited about but... Tickets GOT to tick. Flavor is standard Irish red, toasted grain. Lager yeast like finish. Yes, love this brewery and what they brew, this is just simple. Pretty easy for the masses to down.

Boone Valley Halligan Porter
Tap at The Beerhouse in Urbandale. Perfectly black wih a dense tan head. Jose is medium roasted coffee wih some bit of bread crust and walnuts. The flavor is slightly sweet and lightly toasted wih some walnuts and bits of coffee. The finish is clean and has some medium tobacco character. Overall a nicely done and very smooth beer that tows the line between a brown and robust Porter.

Boone Valley Dunkelweizen
Pours a hazy rust color with a small head.

The aroma is potpourri & banana, pungent & sweet smelling.

The flavor has some honey and spice; itís a touch sweet but not overly so. The beer has some light lemon, banana and yeasty notes.

A nice Dunkelweizen, standing somewhere in the balance between Dunkelweizen & Hefeweizen.

Boone Valley Rye IPA
Pours a bright orange with a good head & lots of lacing on the glass.

The aroma is fantastic, grassy, fresh cut weeds & citrusy hops, bright & very hop forward.

The flavor is again high on hops, itís got a medium level of bitterness, some orange zest, melon, & light onion. Multi layered hop character where nothing really gets muddled but balance prevails.

Really nice.

Boone Valley Midnight Stout
Pours basically black with a thick tan head with nice lacing on the glass.

The aroma is roasty and rich, chocolaty with some mild blackberry fruitiness. Not quite wafting out of the glass, but subtle enjoyable and inviting.

The flavor is perfectly bitter, lots of dark chocolate with a nice level of hoppines, rich, nutty, dry... very satisfying.

The palate is creamy and mouth coating.

Really an enjoyable & refreshing stout, easily my favorite beer I tried from this brewery.

Boone Valley Blue-Eyed Brown
Pours a deep reddish brown with a good head and nice lacing on the glass.

The aroma is nicely hoppy with good fruity notes, light molasses, and some very light nutty and roasty notes.

The flavor is plenty hoppy, a touch soapy with a good earthy hop presence. The chocolate character is good as is the nuttiness. I normally like my browns on the hoppy side, so I dig this, but I think a touch more malt character in this one would make it truly awesome.

The aroma is toasty caramel with some faint light graininess & some leafy hops.

The flavor is nicely earthy with a good zippy hoppiness, some light caramel & some pleasantly grainy as well as bright malt character.

One of my favorite examples of the style, very nice.

[On-tap at BVB] Pours quite dark red-brown with a small beige head. Great lacing. Aroma has light sweetness, zesty aspect, and some toastiness. Taste is pretty nice. Good amount of sweetness, moderate bitterness. Toasted malt really shines. Creamy, good mouthfeel, and long finish. Overall, simple, but very enjoyable. One of the better BVB beers Iíve had.

Nitro tap. The body is.a hazy deep orange brass with a thick and dense yellow tinted head. A sweet grapefruit and bread crust nose. There is also some apple. This tastes like white sugared grapefruit. There is also some black pepper spice at the tail end. Fairly tasty.

On nitro at the brewpub. This was black with the expected khaki head. The nose was deep with milk chocolate and molasses. There was also some pancake syrup. The taste was dark chocolate and light bread dough. There was a strong note of roast in the. A nice brew, but I canít help but think it would be even better without the nitro.

Boone Valley Back Street Wheat
Tap at the brewpub. This was a hazy bronze with a dense off white head. The nose was the expected bananas and a little bit of black pepper. This had more esters like a hefe than an American Wheat. The taste was peaches and slightly spicy in the finish. There was a slight note of soap, but not distracting. This was smooth.

[On-tap at Boone Valley Brewing] Pours dark brown with a nice khaki head. Aroma is a little weak, with a lot of roasted malt. The taste is simple, but nice, with a lot of roasted malt and dark chocolate. Long, lingering finish. Now this is really solid. Very well-rounded, with the roasted malt never dominating or coming across as rough. A very enjoyable beer, and makes me look forward to trying other stouts that BVB may make in the future.

Boone Valley Roxie Irish Red
[On-tap at Boone Valley Brewing] Pours reddish amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is malt driven and quite sweet. The taste is interesting and really hard to peg. I like it, but it baffles me--a pervasive, fruity acidity (grape?) mixed with big maltiness with caramel sweetness. Some hazelnut notes showed up after awhile too. Pretty nice stuff. Overall, I liked this one quite a bit, and it was one that I certainly plan to try again some time.

Boone Valley Semi-Crazy Blonde
[On-tap at Boone Valley Brewing] Pours golden with a small white head. I know that this is a session beer and isnít necessarily supposed to be real complex, but there is almost nothing going on. There is faint maltiness...and that is about it. Thin mouthfeel. Similarly to the IPA, this isnít offensive by any means, there just is very little to the beer.

Boone Valley Downtown Brown Ale
[On-tap at Boone Valley Brewing] Pours brown with a small khaki head. Subdued, roasted malt, caramel, light alcohol, and a little chocolate. Not bad. Medium-thin mouthfeel, and an average finish length. Quite nice, just slightly bland. A middle of the road brown ale, but I enjoyed it.

Boone Valley Iron Horse IPA
[On-tap at Boone Valley Brewing] Pours dark amber with a small off-white head. Aroma is very minimal. Taste has pretty good hop bitterness, decent maltiness, but doesnít hide the alcohol very well. Medium mouthfeel. This was a hard beer to rate, and not just because it was just from a sampler. There was so little aroma, and other than mild bitterness, there wasnít much in the taste either. It wasnít bad, just bland. Iíll re-rate after having a full pint some time.

Boone Valley Back Street Wheat
[On-tap at BVB] Pours slighly hazy golden with a small white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is very malt heavy, and what I can only describe as dusty. The taste is fairly plain, with wheat, multigrain Cheerios, and odd chemical notes--chlorine? Decent mouthfeel, quite carbonated, finish length is above average. Overall, this was really quite bland, and the chemical taste really killed it for me.

Boone Valley Olí Griz Barley Wine
[On-tap at BVB] Pours red with a nice, long-lasting beige head. Aroma is quite sweet and hard to peg--candyish, caramel, a little citrus mixed in (orange). Nicely balanced. The taste is huge on strawberry jam. There is also caramel, a slight nuttiness, and mild alcohol. As it warms, the alcohol really comes out though, and gets a little distracting. Medium mouthfeel, incredibly smooth, and has an average length finish. Overall, very solid, just gets a little hot. Would be a great sipper in the winter.
