Gravity cask at St Peter’s Ale House, Bedford. Dark brown but certainly translucent. Not much visible carbonation. Roast coffee and sweet milk chocolate dominate the aroma. Sweet taste with a rounding bitter on the finish. Long and somewhat bitter aftertaste. Body is watery and a bit flat, but otherwise an above average stout.

Gun Dog Chilly Dog
Gravity from a wooden cask at Engineers Arms 2015 Beer Festival, Henlow. Golden brown, clear, very little head. Wood, vinegar, forest floor aroma. Taste is much improved: an astringent sweet/sour with warming chili. Balanced finish, drier wood in the aftertaste. Fuller body than I expected. Wooden casks can change a beer immeasurably, and I wasn’t sure I would even rate this at first. It is an interesting presentation of a good beer although the wood is far too dominant.

Bottle from The Wine Cellars. Dirtied honey capped generously with white. Good succulent red apple, melon, blackcurrant and fruit salad chew aroma. Overly fizzy but with a pleasant spiced plum and Fruit Salad character emerging from beneath the carb. Blackcurrant and flowers. Well up for trying the cask version.

Gravity poured half-pint on 18th Oct 2014 at the CAMRA Oxford Beer Festival. Golden amber coloured body with a thin off-white wispy head. The aroma was mildly malty with a fruity, floral hint. Taste followed the nose closely with light malts leading the way, some nut and fruit traces which gave way to a dry and semi-bitter finish: an OK brew.

500ml bottle from the WIne Cellars, Lutterworth. Good as black with an initially high tan foam lowering to a collar. Aroma has liquorice and blueberry-like sweet fruit beneath ash-flicked Youngs and Cadbury’s. Mouth a mix of ash, rust and warm berries spooned with mocha. Fizzy like Vimto with some of the flavour. Rustic but good.

500ml. Honey amber beer with a low white head. Nose of privet, bridleway and chalky minerality. Pretty non-committal (bitter) bitter flavour with attempts at Fruit Salad chew, marmalade and pear-like fruitiness over a lean peanut husk-like base. Robust finish clinging long after the swallow. Seawater without salt impressions. Perfectly drinkable if a little dull.

Medium sweet, bottle conditioned winter ale with hints of spice. Pours with a quickly diminishing head, a reddish ale with little aroma. Smooth mouthfeel with a generous hoppy finish. Needs to be more like 6% to be a true winter ale in my opinion though not bad for the first of the evening or a lunchtime tipple.
