Drakes IPA

Drakes Oaklander Weisse - Cucumber
On tap @ Drakes. Hazed pale yellow beer with a thin ring of white foam. This is pretty much what you’d expect. Their base Berliner Weisse is pretty light and lemon forward, so the cucumber kind of just adds to that light feeling but offers a touch of sweetness. There isn’t really a ton of cucumber here either, which is probably why it works. Flavors of cracker and biscuit malts, some lemon peel, and a bit of lemon juice. Good tartness but not overly sour.

Drakes Bryean + Patryecks
On tap at the Dealership. It pours a dark brown color with a light brown head. The aroma has some bready dark rye with a little cocoa and coffee. The flavor is smooth with lots of anise and rye. A little roasted malt related acidity in the finish, but the body is lightly oily and satisfying. A solid rye stout.

Drakes Little Black Rye
On tap at the Barrel House. It pours a brownish amber color with a khaki head. the aroma has dark rye bread with hints of coffee. The flavor has dense rye and roasted malt. Lots of bitterness from the roast and piney hops. A little coffee and smoke. It has a light body that accentuates the acidity and bitterness from the heavy roasted malts, leaving it kind of acrid and unpleasant. Overall, this one was a pass.

Warms the throat. Orange, toffee, marmalade and caramel - a little like brandy. Great desert beer. Plenty of hoppy bitterness with citrus and exotic fruit but it takes a bit of a back seat.

Drakes 1500 Pale Ale
355mL bottle from International Beer collector. BB 01/19/16 Orange gold body, dense white head. Moderate intensity nose - peach, apricot & citrus hops, toasty, biscuity almost vanilla-like malt. Full bodied, nice touch of chewiness about it, moderate-low carbonation. Apricot/stonefruit & melon hop notes continue on the body, that nice sweet biscuity malt in there too, suprisingly restrained bitterness for style (especially for an American one!). Quite enjoyed this one!

Drakes Black Robusto Porter
The only reason that holds me back from classifying this as the best porter I have had is because Founders makes the best porter. Period. Black Robusto measures up very closely. 22oz bottle poured into a large wine glass. The head is dense and creamy with a light brown/dark tan color. The look is solid black. The aroma is sweet caramel malt, chocolate and some floral notes. The flavor is semi sweet cocoa and velvety caramel malt.

Drakes Good Morning Willie Brown
On tap at the Barrel House. It pours a very dark brown/mahogany color with a lasting, creamy light tan head. The aroma has some dark fruity cherry, plum, toast and hints of coffee. The flavor is nice and creamy with coffee, some dark fruity raisin, plum and a good amount of roast. Nice full body with a smoky, roasted finish. This one has a bit more going on than just being a coffee bomb like the Cafe Cacoa.

Drakes Cafe Cacao
On tap at the Barrel House. It pours a very dark brown/mahogany color with a lasting, creamy light tan head. The aroma is coffee with creamer. Strong coffee notes with sweet hazelnut and cocoa cream. It has enough coffee roast to keep it from being too sugary on the nose. The flavor is crazy strong with coffee, nice chocolate and smoke in the background. Good medium body with a roasted coffee finish. This really tastes more like coffee than beer, and it could maybe have a bit more body, but otherwise great.

Drakes Becky’s Basic
On tap at the Barrel House. It pours a pale yellow color with a white head. The aroma is very grainy and worty. Smells like a brewery with a little farty sulfur. The flavor is the same. Mostly pale malt, hints of creamy cooked grains and floral/spicy hops in the finish. Only mildly peppery. Bright, with a little acidity. Medium bitterness. Ok.

Drakes Hop Topp Hefe
On tap at the Barrel House. It pours a lightly hazed pale orange color with a white head. The aroma has wheat and hints of circus peanuts (the candy) and noticeable floral, spicy hops. The flavor has subtle spicy hefe yeast and a velvety mouthfeel. Strong floral hops. Medium bitterness, but high for the style. Not oppressive though. Some citrusy orange notes. A hoppy beer with nicely integrated hefe yeast notes. I wouldn’t have thought this idea could work, and it’s still not really a beer for me, but it was well executed anyway.

Drakes Hummingbird Pils
On tap at the Barrel House. It pours a clear straw yellow color with a small white head. The aroma is really fresh and lemony with some flowers, a little grass and lemon peel. The flavor is dry, crisp on the palate and hoppy with intense lemongrass, lemon, strong hops spice with some strong lemon rind bitterness in the finish. A little too bitter IMO. It has some very light crackery malt and a silky mouthfeel. Bone dry and bitter. Some acidity. Nice combo of noble and citrusy hop character.

Drakes Kick Back
Bottle from Total Wine in Sacramento, CA. Pours light gold with a white head. Aroma is light stone fruits. Med body? Not quite. Flavor is very light pale malt with some Mandarin citrus. Nicely bitter; quite clean. Very light, but the citrus is at a decent level, and the bitterness is adequate. Really a good candidate for lake, beach or pool.

Drakes IPA
Bottle. Pours a clear golden yellow-ish beer with a small white head on top. Aroma of grassy touches, mango, tropical fruits and light citrus. Flavor is bittersweet, loads of fruit, lemon zest and nice grassy touches. Very light, misses some body for a 7.2% beer though. Carbonation is very soft, aftertaste is long and fairly bitter. Certainly not bad, but I’ve had way better IPA’s so far.

Very hazy gold beer, good cream colour head. Palate is light, mildly dry and has good fine minerally carbonation. Soft malts, a light creamy sweetness. Smooth and slightly sweet floral mid. Smooth pine hops. Modest orange citrus and light hop spice. Smooth finish brings a trace of brett. Pretty smooth but it lacks something.
