Has the worrying taste of salt and vinegar potato crisps, with a bit of popcorn in the finish. Fizzy palate. No sign of alcohol, but it's probably hidden behind the bad stuff. One of those - not sure there's any beer here at all. I really wouldn't normally buy an "imperial pastry sour", or whatever they're calling nonsense like this nowadays, but it was a special for Nisha, and I'm in Nisha, so I'll make an exception. FatPhil	3.6 Apynys Kalėdinis Kosmosas 330ml can (Vigniu non-existent webshop, Kaunas - thanks Tomas!) (7:4:7:4:14=3.6) Basically black, doughy head. Hot cross bun aroma, sweet and bunny, orange peel, cinnamon and clove, and I even imagine raisins here. Quite a light palate, no heaviness or stickiness at all, it seems like a British 5.X% real ale winter porter - even has the softness of the carbonation too. Taste is also bunny, but also beery - there's a proper roast to it. Spices are obviously clear, but they aren't stupid, I am actually going to approve the use of the word "subtle", because compared to some of the nonsense out there this has barely more than a hint. If I close my eyes, I wonder if I can imagine being at the Cambridge Festival of Winter Ales. Yes, I can. That's impressive. Downstairs back bar, yeah.... Great winter porter, even if the concept is simple, like the British beers that I love. And if this is bottom fermented, this is another proof that snobbery over such differences is misplaced, that yeast makes a good beer in the right hands. And if this is a cheeky top-fermented BP, that's fine too - challenging the stuck-in-one-moment-of-time mindset of "BP=lager" should be done regularly as well. Friday, February 18, 2022

FatPhil	3.1 Apynys / Rockmill Third Wave NEIPA 330ml can (Vingiu non-existent webshop, Kaunas - thanks Tomas!) (6:3:6:3:13=3.1) Woh, that's a hoppy aroma, right from opening the can the sweet citrussy aroma hops literally fly out of the can. Sweet pale malts accompany that in the glass, a fairly clean NEIPA aroma. Pale and cloudyish. Light palate, carbonation a bit prickly. Clean NEIPA taste, pale malts, some zesty orange, but also some washing detergent. Pleasant bitter bite, but perhaps a bit soapy, quite assertive and tingly, but no hop acid burn. Way better than average NEIPA, I can happily drink this. Sunday, October 10, 2021

Sweet caramelly malty aroma, some graininess, but no grunge, some Horlick's. Rich sweet malty taste too, some almost marmitiness too. Medium palate, residual sugars soften it, carbonation lightens it but perhaps is a bit too high. Just a touch raw, I could do with a bit more attenuation, but ambers are allowed to be sweet, I'm not faulting it. Nice bitter bite in the finish, good use of noble hops. Sunday, September 26, 2021

FatPhil	2.9 Apynys / In Peccatum Brut IPA 375ml bottle (Vingiu webshop, Tallinn) (6:4:5:2:12=2.9) Clear golden orange, large frothy head, sediment settled nicely so that it was easy to pour almost all of it. Lovely fruity esters as I pour, almost grapey but not quite winey. In the glass more of the grains come over. Light palate, crisp carbonation, quite spritzy. Slightly schizo taste, pale malts, some unripe fleshy fruits, really biting noble hop bitterness, but some dirty earthiness too. Biting tingle and earthiness persist, dominating the finish. Swirling improves it massively, taking the acidity off the tongue and letting the malts come out more. I still don't get bruts in general, and the bitterness here is mis-aimed considering the grain bill - you could stick this hop regime in a stout, for instance - so this doesn't convert me. However, it's well crafted as what it is, and the alcohol is well hidden. Not for me. Monday, May 10, 2021

This is for the version 1 recipe, but with the updated red label (also used for version 2 with the '2' above the mask). Specs: Alc. 5.6% IBU 35 EBC 27. Hops: NZ Rakau, NZ Cascade, US Nugget and Citra. Lovely rich mahogany, tight tan head. Rich sweet and hoppy aroma, spicy, piney, a bit nutty. Lovely full palate, tingles with bitterness. Sweet caramel and resiny piney and woody bitterness. Exactly how I like my red ales. Good one. Saturday, January 30, 2021

Sweet malty body, tons of fruity hops. Slightly pungent bitterness. Soft oatflake clearer in aroma later, and also in the taste, but shy of the silly levels one finds in NEIPAs.
