Union Craft Double Duckpin
Canned 5/12/16, drunk 8/13/16.
Kind of opened this as a joke, seeing how it was 3 months old. But it poured with plenty of life. A large, white, well-retained head atop a lightly hazy, tangerine-peach-golden body.
And the nose is sublime! Wow, this is a hell of a beer, showing no flaw whatsoever and soft, juicy, fuzzy hops, with a slight dank edge and plenty of nectarine, tangerine, lemon and orange. You’d expect the malt to have taken over at this point, but it still shows a good balance, and the malts are seemingly well-attenuated, leaving very light honey and biscuit behind. Soft mineral notes are enjoyable and there’s no sign of alcohol.
The flavor balance is wonderful as well, showing honey-biscuit and stone fruit-like juiciness. Soft grapefruit, tangerine and orange notes add moderate bitterness and little, if any, resin. Moderate carbonation is quite engaging and the beer drinks incredibly easily. Would love to try more from these guys. Obviously the brewer here is excellent.

Got a can from a friend. Golden color with only a slight have , nice modest light head and nice fragrance. slight pepper and earthy note. SA bit unusual but I liked it. Good level of malt as well and while not full bodied it was certainly not thin.

12oz can. Looks light. Aroma of sourness/tartness, pale malts and wheat, light salt, light herbs, and light citrusy notes. Flavor exactly what you’d want from a nice light gose, but it’s not as good as some others. Average to lighter texture. A pretty good beer.

Tap into a snifter showing well filtered yellow with sparse white foam. The nose shows light notes of banana. The palate is perfectly carbonated and light bodied. Good malt balance and very light bitterness on the finish. Not terribly interesting

4oz draft pour at the sneak peak before the Union 4th Anniversary Party. Poured a slightly hazy yellow color with a small white head. I got a lot of green onion in this one on the aroma, with some light grass clippings. Okay, but doesn’t come together like I had hoped it would. Bitter and while it is crisp, it lacks a certain something.

4oz draft pour at the sneak peak before the Union 4th Anniversary Party. Light cardboard, boozy caramel malts. Bitter finish. Not sure barleywine beers are my thing anymore. Improved as it warmed, bringing out a very rich, sweet caramel malt character. I would love to have a bottle of this to age a bit to see how it holds up.

Union Craft Old Pro Gose (Ginger)
Cask at Churchkey. Poured a hazy golden color with a small white head. Aroma is tart lactic notes, like the base beer. A touch of ginger, but lacking in that spicy ginger character that I was expecting coming into this one. Flavor was still very pleasant with some wheat, and a touch of sea salt. Flavor was nice tart notes, salt ocean, with a light twist of light zest.

This one surprised me a bit. I’m not a huge fan of Belgian Ale, but the banana bread ester thing worked for me in this case. It’s got a fruit background with yeast riding shotgun. Golden bright pour on tap.

Gift from a neighbor, 32 oz growler can. Appearance a bright golden body with a slight haze and a foamy bone-white head. Aroma is doughy bread, tree fruits, yeasty esters and a dash of toast. Taste is much of the same; yeasty up front with pears, maybe some peach, doughy grains, and some earthy grass. Palate is medium bodied, very yeasty, medium carbonation and a lingering stickiness. A nice and approachable take on the style. Not really sure of the correlation between heavy metal and strong Belgian ale, but it works!

Canned 4/7/16, drunk 7/24/16.
Light haze to this muted gold body. Small white head is thin and shows low retention.
Nice peachy fruitiness with moderate salinity, soft, creamy malts and biscuity, light wheat. Very solid with no flaw or alcohol.
Floral and lightly cidery, with soft lactic character, low carbonation and a good maltiness. Nicely attenuated. Not overly salty or sour and light and easygoing for a good summer quencher. Like the lingering lemon juice character...

Crisp clear golden and lightly caramel coloured body with a thin, fast-dying pure white head. Aroma of sour grapes, light malt, yeast, lemons, citrus, salt and a touch of cherries - very nice. Super light-bodied; Great super sour flavour at first with lemons, sour grapes, cherries, salt, yeast and funk all noticeable initially. Aftertaste shows some nice robust lemon, citrus, yeast, wheat, cherry, lemon and puckering sourness - very nice and surprisingly complex for such a light and unassuming beer. Overall, a very nice gose, perhaps one of the best i’ve ever had - a flavourful beer with not much alcohol and especially no body - which makes it easy to drink a lot of these, and that’s fine, given they have so much flavour and especially a lot of sourness. Definitely a nice beer worth trying to find and/or get if at all possible and you like the style. I sampled this 32 ounce growler fill (as well as a twelve ounce can from another store) purchased on draught from Whole Foods in Fair Lakes (Fairfax), Virginia on 16-July-2016 and had the last bit of the growler on 21-July-2016 for US$5,00 and it still stood up - in a very nice way.
