One pint can. Pours an opaque deep brown with a big brown head. Tons of lacing. Giant toasted malt smells and chalk. Sweet and toasted flavors with a good chalky finish. Sticky mouthfeel and full body. Some alcohol warming. Good job.

Charter Oak 1687 Brown Ale
Can pour. Appearance is dark brown (like a cola) with light sparkle at the edges of the glass, finger-width beige head with good retention and trace lacing. Aroma is light roast and mild nuts. Taste follows aroma with late bitterness. Mouthfeel is light-to-medium bodied with smooth texture, average carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, competent but not exemplary in any way.

Charter Oak Candles Out NEIPA
One pint can. Pours the color of honey opaque with a massive buff head of dense bubbles. Hoppy aroma of dried apricots and pine. Hoppy and juicy with a long bitter finish. Nice example of the style with more hops and less juice than a classic NEIPA.

Pours good, hides the alcohol well, but otherwise is plain & as boring as it gets! Pours copper w/ a retaining tan head & decent lacing. The aroma is mainly malt w/ a hint of being a weak barleywine. The taste is primarily all malt w/ a touch of hip bitterness in the end. It’s fairly thin on the palate & finishes dry. Not my cup of tea!

Charter Oak Pale Ale
Not a particualry bad pale but just not memorable. Pours copper w/ a foamy beige head & messy lacing. The aroma is kind of malty sweet & the flavor surprisingly follows suit. The hops are quite light making this malty brew fairly easy to drink. It's okay.

July 2016 - Bottle share at Craft Beer Co Islington as ’Charter Oak Lights Out Stout’. Many thanks to Leighton for this. Black, opaque, big foamy brown head, thick lacing. Aroma is boozy, molasses, smoke, meaty, nice 50% chocolate. Body is smooth, a touch foamy. Taste is chocolatey, smoke, tangy, earthy, light coffee with a boozy and spicy finish. A touch rough at times, but also pretty tasty and nuanced. Good. (3.7)

Charter Oak Courageous Special Ale
Taster pour at Craft Beer Race New Haven. Appearance is caramel brown with small head and lacing, cloudy. Floating sediment chunks. Aroma is caramel malt over a bit unfinished like wort. Taste is caramel, also a bit unfinished. Palate is full bodied with thick texture, soft carbonation, more sweet than bitter finish. Overall, more malty than hoppy but a yeasty, unfinished (wort-like) quality dominates.

Pretty pour but a bit hoppy for the style! Attractive brown pour w/ a retaining tan head & good lscing. The aroma is subtle & just has some faint malt coming through. The taste is primarily bitter & any chocolate or roasted notes are a minuscule undertone. Kind of different for s brown but not exactly in a good way!

Charter Oak 1687 Brown Ale Bourbon Infused in Madagascar Vanilla Beans
Pint on tap from a cask at Pies and Pints in Oxford, CT. Hazy red brown color. Thin off-white bubbly head, with good retention. Leaves good bits of lace. Nutty, chocolate, and that madagascar vanilla. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of full body. Lightly dry finish. Touch of bourbon. Moderate sweet taste, lighter bitterness. Very satisfying cask brown ale.

Charter Oak Wadsworth IPA
Bottle. Aroma is initial burst of pine with more prevalent citrusy, orange-zest type smell afterward and yeasty smell like on old meat. Appearance is massive, foamy off-white head--have to be careful with the pour (had to pour three times to get full contents into a pint glass), a little bit annoying because it is so massive. Good retention and lacing like spray foam. Nice crackly sound. After second pour, color was clear, beautiful dark copper with nice carbonation. After third pour, sediment came out and left it cloudy dark orange--should have left the last 10th in the bottle. Taste is really mild--not a lot here. A little bitter up front but a bit like wort, like it didn’t finish fermenting (or perhaps because I poured the sediment in), with a mild maltiness and fruitiness at the end. Palate is medium bodied, a bit frothy, with lively carbonation especially at the tip of the tongue and lips. Finish is dry and fairly abrupt. I was rooting for this beer but there isn’t a whole lot to recommend it. It’s not a bad beer, but the aroma and appearance are its best qualities while taste and palate are lacking.

Poured from 120z bottle into pint glass: Pours clear copper with a lot of off-white head. Smells sweet, bubblegum with maybe a hint of floral. Taste is not so great. Overly malty and sweet, with little hop flavor, but lots of hop bitter. It’s pretty bad, very harsh. Medium bodied and over-carbonated, can’t recommend this one at all.

Charter Oak Brown Ale
Clear very dark ruby amber with a fluffy cloud for a head and streamers of lace. Taste is caramel malt and tart toffee that has a bit of coffee character as it moves through the palate. There isn’t quite enough bittering at the end to balance. Pretty big flavor, but heavy on the sweetness. Reasonable effort

Draft @ the Beer Garden in Stamford, CT. This is a solid brown ale that has a surprisingly high barley flavor. Medium bodied and laces nicely. Not much of a hop flavor, but nothing offensive about this beer, but they need to figure out to eliminate the chalkiness of this.
