Hopothesis Beer Company Reviews

Hopothesis Falliní Oats Oatmeal Amber 3.3
This was really hoppy, more so than I expected. The oat caramel taste got really lost through here. It was fairly smooth and easy drinking, but more of a hop beer.

Smells a lot sweeter than it tastes. Flavor is rather simple - malt and bitter. Body is ok. A yawner.

12 oz. bottle from Chris - thanks again, Chris. Minhas! Wow, that makes sense. Pours a clear gold if you can keep the yeast floaters at the bottom from pouring in; I spotted them in the bottle, and left the last ounce or so in there. Small white head that settles into a wispy film and a ring. A metric shit ton of banana in the nose, with caramel and sweet bread, dried fruits like golden raisins and figs, phenols, a lot of sugar, and a bit of a metallic note. Medium-full bodied, with moderate carbonation and a really sweet and heavy mouthfeel. This oneís a load. 12 oz. is too much. 5.5% but drinks like double that level.

Hopothesis Falliní Oats Oatmeal Amber 2.5
Aroma of sweet cherries, some caramel. Reddish amber color with a thin tan head. Sweet up front. Malty caramel, some cherry. Bitterness is light medium with notes of pepper. Finish is bitter with some oak notes. Balances sweetness pretty decently. Slight off flavor in the transition and in after taste. Lighter mouth feel, slightly watery.

This starts w/ the weird, gross over-ripe fruit smell all Minhas beers have and ends w/ a sort of earthy amber ale w/ a touch of roast character. Yeah, it is not exactly great. I guess it has a decent creamy texture if you can get past the taste and the smell but I canít imagine anyone wanting to do that. There might be some good brewers at Hopothesis but weíll never know until they change contractors or build their own brewery.

Hopothesis Falliní Oats Oatmeal Amber 3
Bottle. Reddish brown color with a small tan head. Aroma is bubble gum sweetness and a bit of malt. Flavor is dark bitterness and a touch of caramel malt. Medium bodied with an herbal bitter finish and a touch of malt creaminess. Not bad but something just didnít seem to click for me with this one.

Hopothesis Drafty Window 2.5
12 oz. bottle poured to a shaker at the bar in the Shoreline Restaurant in Gills Rock, WI.. Displayed a hazed, orangey gold hue, with some lingering fluffiness to the off white head foam, and spots of lacing. The nose was lightly dank & earthy, with soft esters. Light+ bodied, with fair carbonation, the taste was honey sweet, with low, earthy bitterness, and noticeable, buttery diacetyl. Didnít finish. Saison/farmhouse ale? Not enlightened.

Bottled. Cloudy brown. Nice thick head.. Has a nutty malty taste. After a couple drinks grassy piney pops out. Below average IPA

Oh gracious this is made at Minhas?

Pours golden & perfectly clear with a loose small head that falls fairly quickly.

The aroma is sort of spicy with some lavender and metallic characteristics.... overall itís really not very aromatic.

The beer is lightly fruity with a mild minerallity. Itís pretty sweet and has a sort of sweet corn thing happening. The beer is spicy a little soapy... sort of tastes like apples. ugh.

The beer sits unnecessarily heavy on the palate but has a carbonation that provides a little liveliness. It leaves a real bad lingering sensation on the finish.

Bottle at home. Aroma is diacetyl and roasty malts. Tastes of diacetyl and caramel malts, with a dry finish with flavors of cardboard emerging. Pretty tough to get though a bottle. Back to the drawing board.

Hopothesis Falliní Oats Oatmeal Amber 3.3
Bottled. Poured rich coppery orange with a swirly off-white head. The aroma picked up sweet molasses, maple, and buttered fruity notes with lightly-toasted earthy accents. The flavor found similar, with molasses and buttered malts leading.. some fruity tartness joined toward the back. Smooth and buttery through the palate.. just a hair too sweet, but it was tasty and very drinkable.

Everything about this is too sweet. Floral aroma, caramel and fruit flavors that are just too cloying before an overly sweet finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Hopothesis Falliní Oats Oatmeal Amber 3.2
Pours a hazy chestnut brown with a brief head. Aroma is sweet - caramel and vanilla. Flavor follows - quite sweet to start, hops takes the edge off the sweet after the initial hit of sweet. Palate has the typical oatmeal texture. Overall its a bit too sweet for my palate, but it has some substance.

355ml twist off bottle. Typical cornwine smell of minhas. amber color. Flavor is okay, some savory yeast notes, caramel, fruits, slick mouthfeel but still dry in the finish, yet sweet and almost boozy. Its all over the place. These guys shoudl really call it quits.

This pours an orange bodied brew with a scrawny bubbly head thatís little more than a film. It smells fruity, cherries with an apple slice, and has some burnt light brown sugar. Itís watery and the light flavor is mildly fruity with a soft earthy bitterness. The finish is watery. "Drafty Window" somehow fits.

12 oz bottle. Pours a hazy ruby amber with a moderate khaki head. Aroma is bready and loaded with sweet, dark fruits, reminiscent of a Belgian dubbel or quad. Taste is also reminiscent of a Belgian but with toasted malt notes and some alcohol presence. Pretty tasty brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured a clear copper color with a fine head and minimal lacing. Aroma was of prune-like sweet fruits/malt. Taste is similar with a sweet malty front end followed with a slight prune flavoring and a light hop bitterness finish. Palate is decent. Overall, an OK farm house ale.

Bottle from Binnyís in Schaumburg, IL. Murky reddish amber pour with a small dense ring head. Caramel malt, soy, some sort of dark berry/raisin - but not in a good way. A bit astringent on the tongue and slightly metallic. This isnít good.

This pours a medium brown color with a slight off-white head. The aroma is a little malty with hints of oats. The texture is very thin and the taste isnít too strong. Fairly drinkable but it is light and doesnít have a whole lot of flavor. Overall itís fairly sweet but lacks depth in the taste.

Hopothesis IPA 2.9
Clear golden-orange with a light white head. Bubblegum, very sweet nose. Hint of grapefruit and citrus. Touch of resin. Bitter initially, heavy malt sweetness in the middle and a dry bitter, medium long finish. Relatively clean palate, medium to light body, not a ton of carbonation. Fine, unremarkable IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Enjoyed at a friends place prior to seeing Future Islands. Appearance is a dark amber with a thin lightly frothy white head. Aroma not much there, not terrible though. Taste is just ok, real malty, almost too malty, weird off notes, not a big fan.

12oz bottle 8/8/14 (Woodmanís-Waukesha Mix A Six)-42į in Tulip-Pours a hazy golden orange with a small white covering for a head. Aroma of yeast, funk, citrus, hops, spices, and grass. Taste of yeast, spices, hops, and slight malt. This light bodied brew is not bad but a bit mild for a Saison.

If this is the future of cerebral drinking experiences maybe my policy of drinking and not thinking has been correct all along. Iím seriously doubting the claim of "years of research" that is on the bottle, or maybe instead of research you could use trial and error. Iím going to finish the six cause its 7.1% and that I paid 10 bucks for it, but Iím not going to like it. This may inspire to be more cerebral in my selection in beers I donít know, from now on if I see anything related to science on the label Iíll use kinesia to walk on by.

Hopothesis IPA 2.6
Pours cloudy apricot/orange with minimal head and a relentless carbonation release. Tastes sweet almost spicy, flavored. Never had an "IPA" quote like this before. Ot a big fan. $9.99/multi six pack at Binnyís Beverage Depot, Elmwood Park, IL

Hopothesis IPA 2.6
Right. This is an IPA. The 6-packís cardboard carrier claims that "the outcome is a refreshing, flavorful, and thought-provoking drinking experience." Okay. Whatís thought-provoking is, what is this all about? It looks just fine, golden bodied with a tall creamy head and thick lacing. The aroma isnít too bad, if mild, some citrus, some floral, an underlying sweetness. The flavor, though, is lacking substance beyond a pale malty sweetness; merely a suggestion of hops appears. There is a very mild bitterness to the finish (55 IBUs?), but that fades quickly. The sturdy alcohol content (7.1% ABV) remains well hidden, but if youíre looking for an IPA, keep looking.

12oz bottle, thanks to Caterwaul. Shared with b3shine. Mostly clear golden orange color. Thin off-white ring of head. Loose bits of lace. Quickly fades to nothing. Some metallic mustiness in the nose; bread. Light caramel malt, some butterscotch. Hints of mango. Some honey. Weird. Kind of musty and metallic. Lightly spicy. More dry finish. Smooth, kind of crisp, kind of soft lighter carbonation. A bit slick. Moderate sweet taste. Light to moderate bitter. Sort of musty, funky. Bit of skunk. Odd, and not in a good farmhouse way. In a skunky, old-beer macro kind of way. Over-sweet, and a bit sticky. Not a fan.

Hopothesis Drafty Window 3.4
Pours slightly hazy butterscotch gold with brief frothy white head. Nice malty aroma with a hint citrus, slightly musty. Flavors of ginger with orange peel on medium malt frame. Palate is lightly chewy. Overall very nice, a lot of finesse and subtly without getting heavy, refreshing.

Hopothesis Drafty Window 3.2
Bottle to snifter (shared by DrSilverworm). Looks solid; a transparent golden orange with thin white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells solid too; honey with some notes of yeast. Tastes like it smells, but less complex. Average on the palate. A bit sweet and syrupy for the style, but decent nonetheless.

Hopothesis IPA 1.3
Bottle @ home. Thanks to Andy as part of Secret Krampus. Hazed dark orange pour with a white head. Smells sour, briney, and of green apples. Big time celery, lemon juice, and paper. What the h? Flavor is gross. Tons of green apple, celery, and olive skins. Brine, lemon juice, and tons of caramel malt. This is crap.

Hopothesis IPA 1.9
Definitely the best thing about this beer is its appearance. Nothing else, except the ABV reflects anything close to a traditional or even recognizable IPA. Almost no hops in the nose, very little in the taste, body is not bad except thereís some missing characteristics that the hops give to the mouth feel. And of course the finish sums all of this up. I can hardly imagine how a more forgettable beer could be made.

Hopothesis Drafty Window 3
I guess itís a semi valiant effort at a saison. I can tell from the various aspects what theyíre trying to do, but just barely. Considering the breweryís history, I can imagine that this is an effort to make beer that is just good enough in the least expensive way - and it seems that way. Whether itís the aroma, the flavor, the appearance, body, or finish, they all have the suggestion of a saison, and nothing more. Not bad beer. Nor good.
Tuesday, March 25, 2014

Hopothesis Drafty Window 2
Pours pretty much clear golden amber. Small fizzy semi creamy white head. Aroma is just indistinct sweetness, caramel and honey I guess, vague fruity.. Flavor has the same unappealing sweetness. Caramel, honey, little spicy, grass, little dryness in finish. Lighter Medium body. Little syrupy. Not good. Some ífarmhouse funkí would have been welcome.

Hopothesis Drafty Window 3.3
malty, sweet, citrus, creamy aroma. taste is similar. Sweet, malty, a little yeast. definitely sweeter than I expected for a saison/farmhouse ale. A slight bitter finish. A good beer, but personally doesnít seem like a saison to me. But what do I know.
