Bottle from sobeys. Dark yellow with a bit of a head. Aromas of hops and some caramel. Taste is piney and malty. Pretty good pale ale.

Garrison Imperial Chocolate Stout 3.4
Thanks gethinbeer. The nose is really quite unctuous. Lots of bittersweet chocolate and a bit of herbal character as well as some boozy rum raisin notes. A little bit thin but there are light roasty notes on the back. Licorice and a bit of light pepper. Okay brew - a bit light on the palate but okay

Garrison Trop Yard Radler 3
Pale orange pour. The nose is of orange and light citrusy hops. More assertive bitterness than is typical in a radler. Lingering bitterness and a touch of orange as well. Juicy finish. Okay.

Garrison Coast to Coastless Collaboration 3.6
650ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazed golden caramel with a thin head. Aroma has notes of caramel, dark fruits, and hints of woody herbal, and faint candy sugar. Taste is balanced. Dark fruits, caramel, slight heather/woodiness, faint citrus, and a mildly hope bitterness ending. Medium-full body with a medium carbonation. A bit creamy in the mouth with a dry finish. Overall more like the monkeys version than the Philips version. Dark fruits, caramel, a bit of woody Scotch ale flavour, and a touch of citrus hops.

Garrison Spruce Beer 3.6
Thin tan head fades to a persistent ring around the glass. Clear deep copper colour. Aroma could initially be confused with a phenolic character, then becomes apparent that it is spruce, with some light caramel sweetness. Spruce comes out huge in the flavour! Some faint roasty and caramel notes. Medium carbonation, medium-full mouthfeel. Tingle spruce after taste. Unique beer.

Garrison Spruce Beer 3.8
Either sucking on a spruce tree is your thing or it isn’t. Made as a tribute to the soldiers who improvised their brewing with local materials in the 17th and 18th century forts of New France, this beer doesn’t just hint at conifer. A sipper, to be sure that takes a bit of time to grow on you. Over time Garrison appears to have adjusted this recipe to allow for a solid caramel underbelly to show through. Highly recommended as a fireside sip or a cure for scurvy.

CANBIF bottle. Pours foggy amber orange with a nice frothy off white top. Aroma is citrus, orange and floral notes. Taste is a nicely balanced, good body, citrus and orange hop bitterness with a nice sweet malt bed. Not overpowering but a great brew.

Garrison Grand Baltic Porter Rum Barrel Aged 3.7

Garrison Modem Hoperandi 3.9
Bottle: Poured a clear golden color ale with a nice white foamy head with good retention. Aroma of clean crisp cereal notes with light residual sugar notes is quiet awesome. Taste is also dominated by clean and crisp cereal notes with light floral undertone and some residual sugar notes. Body is about average for style with good carbonation. Not a popular beer style and I was expecting much but this beer is quite the thirst quencher.

Garrison Klingon Warnog Roggen 3.5
2015-11-XX. Dark brown body with a nice beige head and lace. 3+ Aroma had a sweet malty core with accents of caramel and toasty malt, light spice notes (rye?). Flavour is similar, sweetish malt core with dry finish and accents of caramel and toasty malt. Average bodied palate, good carbonation. Decent. 7/4/7/3/14 Bottle courtesy of Big Red, I think.

Great Lakes X Metalman X Garrison Not So Gentle Tickle IPA 3.8
Bottle: Poured an amber/orangey color ale with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of floral hops with some citrusy and resin notes. Taste is a nice balance mix of light residual sugar notes with some floral hops with citrusy notes and some resin. Medium bitterness with light bready malt. Body is about average with good carbonation. Great collaboration with tasty IPA.

Garrison Imperial Chocolate Stout 3.7
Bottle: Poured a dark black color stout with a nice light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of nice sweet black chocolate notes with light dry bitter roasted malt also noticeable. Taste is also a nice mix of sweet black chocolate notes with some dry bitter roasted malt notes. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Nice chocolate stout though a fuller and creamier body would have been even better.

Garrison One Hop IPA #3: East Kent Golding 3.5
October 19, 2013 - gravity cask at Cask Days 2013. Very hazy orange-gold with a small frothy/bubbly off-white head. Interesting aroma - unripe apricot, cereal grain, plenty of acidity grassy/herbal funky bitterness (Goldings, duh) - a little bready- pleasing. Taste follows, less funk, more floral lightness, hides the alcohol well - well balanced and not too funky. Light body, mildly acidic and carbonated, medium tingly finish, ultimately fairly dry and light. Nice beer.

Garrison Modem Hoperandi 2.5
Clear golden pour with a thin white lace. Malt aroma. Sweet malt flavour with a smooth finish.

Garrison / Beaus Sweet Rye’d 3.4

Garrison Hopyard Pale 3.4
341ml bottle. Pours a hazy golden orange with an average, short lived, white head that laces. Hoppy aroma of grapefruit, pine, grass and caramel. Hoppy grapefruit flavour with caramel malt, pine, grass and a resiny, dry, bitter finish. Medium body with an oily texture and average carbonation. A pleasant surprise.

Garrison Nut Brown Ale 3.5
Pours a dark brown with a big head. Taste of caramel, molasses and herbal hops with some earthiness following.
Friday, October 30, 2015

Garrison Klingon Warnog Roggen 3.2
Bottle sampled at THT. Pours cloudy brown with a small beige head. Aroma of overripe dark fruit, rye, candy, toffee and malt. Flavour is over moderate sweet and moderate bitter. Medium bodied with light carbonation.

Garrison Sugar Moon Maple Ale 3.1
Transparent brown hue with a minimally sized, quickly dissipating white head. Very nice aroma with notes of potent maple syrup, caramel, brown sugar, and candy. Light bodied and bubbly. Robust maple syrup taste from start to finish, lingering as well, complemented with caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, and a mildly bitter hop finish. Not amazing by any means, but the maple syrup taste is executed very well.

Garrison Grand Baltic Porter Rum Barrel Aged 3.8
My Bottom Line:
Candied black cherries, milk chocolate and vanilla thrive in a silky, soft mouthfeel brushed by alcohol warmth.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the mahogany-hued dark brown.
-This isn’t very sweet for the style, which actually is in character for this brewery.
-The flavor profile is deep but not boastful.
-The rum barrel contributes subtly in the flavor profile.

Garrison Klingon Warnog Roggen 3.4
Bottle given to me by my brother-in-law, and opened around 11 months after it was released - not ideal for a 5.5% abv beer, but it still seemed to be in decent shape, aside from perhaps a touch of oxidization. Appearance is dark copper-brown with a small head. Aroma of clove, caramel malt, a bit of pumpernickel rye bread, and a light backnote of banana. All of those elements also come through in the flavour to varying degrees, and the finish is mildly tart with a rye tang. Not too shabby.

Garrison Double Jack Imperial Pumpkin 3.1
Poured from bottle. Aroma of cloves, spices, and some pumpkin. Pours a clear amber with off-white head. Taste is light bitter sweet. Light to medium body with oily texture. An ok brew, but their Winter Warmer is much better.

Garrison Coast to Coastless Collaboration 3.8
Bottle, brought back from the brewery by Parksy after his east coast visit. Tawny amber, light golden head. Lovely fruity toffee profile, soft citrus, spicy undertones, mildly bitter finish. No hint of the ABV. Very nice!

Garrison Double Jack Imperial Pumpkin 3.4
Dark reddish-orange clear body, white head. Cinnamon aroma. Rice pudding, a touch of booze. Taste is semi-sweet, pumpkin spice, watery finish. Overall a pretty nice pumpkin spice beer.

Garrison Double Jack Imperial Pumpkin 3.7
Interesting but tasty brew. Pours an attractive dark burnt orange. Aromas are big cinnamon and fall spices. I also get apple cider. Flavours are fall spices, apple cider and roasted malts. I tasted pickled pumpkin fit the first time.. And this beer tastes very much like that. So I like it.

Garrison Tilford’s Nit-Wit 3.5
(Tap) hazy bright yellow colour with a small, white head; aroma of honey, lilies; balanced flavour with a long, light bitter finish; creamy palate

Garrison Double Jack Imperial Pumpkin 3.5
Bottle. Mostly clear orange-amber pour with a small off-white head. Aroma is not quite the classic pumpkin spiced beer, almost a blend of pumpkin pie and fruitcake - some sweet fruit and candy notes. Flavour is also sweet, blending fruitcake and pumpkin pie. An interesting take on the style, very flavourful and seasonally appropriate, although not entirely my taste.

Garrison India Pale Ale 3.7
Purchased at the brewery in Halifax. After having their Hopyard Pale, let’s see how this one differs. Same look, clean light-amber, great warm cap. The nose is pretty close with the fresh hops, grass. The difference is in the taste. This one is hoppier with lots of grass notes. Not as much grain like the other. Dry mouthfeel with some good bitterness. Nice IPA with some nice fruity notes over the hops.

Garrison Hopyard Pale 3.6
Single bottle from the brewery in Halifax. Pours a clean light-amber colour with not much carbonation, but the head is beautiful, creamy, frothy, long lasting and with some soapy lace. Nice fresh hop nose at first pour, but then grain comes out with some caramel notes. The taste is milder with a little grass and some nice bitterness getting stronger in the finish. Cereal grain lingers mildly. Not a bad Pale Ale.

Garrison Seaport Blonde 3.1
Purchased a bottle at the brewery in Halifax. Pours a clean light golden colour with an off-white, fizzy-bubbly head, average retention and a little lacing around the collar. The nose is quite grainy with toasted cereals and some sweetness from hints of honey. Same for the taste, but milder with most of the sweetness gone. Makes this one a very nice drinking summer light blonde. Nice !

Great Lakes X Metalman X Garrison Not So Gentle Tickle IPA 3.3
Clear copper pour with a frothy white head and clinging lace. Fruit hop aroma. Smooth fruit flavour. Quite aromatic with a smooth sweet finish.
Tuesday, September 22, 2015

Garrison Ol’ Fog Burner 3.9
My Bottom Line:
Dried cranberries, strawberry jam and light aniseed angles are met by potent coniferous hops and their salient bitterness in this voluptuous Barley Wine.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A generous head of foam sticks to the generous reddish amber.
-Mouthfeel is perfectly carbonated, effervescence lifting the residual sugars admirably.
-Alcohol heat graces each sip.
-Resinous hop bitterness is probably overzealous at this early stage in the beer’s evolution.
-This was probably too young still. Another year or so on it and it will surely become world-class.

Garrison Hopyard Pale 3.8
Appearance: clear medium gold with one fat finger of creamy white head, good retention and lacing. (4/5) Aroma: pithy citrus, dank, pine, floral, caramel malt. (8/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium body, moderate carbonation, medium duration bitter finish. (4/5) A pretty good APA. Slight West Coast dank, and a pleasant dry-hopped nose. Definitely one of Garrison’s stronger offerings. (15/20)

Garrison Grand Baltic Porter 3.7
Bottle share at Chriso’s. Many thanks! Cola dark brown, small foamy tan head. Aroma is soft malts, chocolate syrup. Body is medium, tingly carbonation, slightly foamy. Taste is syrupy and toffee-ish up front, tangy fruits with a dry ashy finish, pretty bitter. Nice stuff.
Monday, September 14, 2015

Garrison Raspberry Wheat 3.1
6-pack from the NSLC in Halifax. Pours a clean golden colour with a very slight pink hue haze. Raspberry juice aromas over light grain. The raspberry fruit is milder in the taste, showing more the cereal graininess in the finish. Refreshing, grainy and decent fruitiness for this average Raspberry Wheat brew.
Saturday, September 12, 2015

Garrison Sugar Moon Maple Ale 2.7
Appearance: clear medium amber with one finger of light tan head, good retention and patchy lacing. (3/5) Aroma: strong maple, faint caramel malt. (5/10) Taste: moderate sweet, mild bitter. (5/10) Palate: medium body, moderate carbonation, off-dry bitter finish. (3/5) Actually not unpleasant, and nowhere near as sweet as the aroma would suggest. Although it smells exactly like a stack of maple syrup covered pancakes, the actual taste is much more restrained: it’s actually not any sweeter than a typical amber, albeit with a fairly hefty dose of maple flavour, and a surprisingly pronounced bitter finish. Unfortunately, it’s not an unqualified success, since the maple aroma verges on overpowering, and the transition from the strong aroma to the bitter finish feels particularly sudden given the near-complete absence of sweetness in between. (11/20)

Garrison Tall Ship Amber 3.2
Purchased at NS Liquor on my trip to Nova Scotia. Pours a rich golden colour with a very light amber hue. Nice creamy off-white head with decent retention and some more creamy lacing. Aromas are quite grainy with some hay and mild sweetness. The taste is pretty much the same, but with the hop showing in the finish. Light grass, but with a touch of what seems like adjunct or chemical hints. The rest is not bad, but not like written on label "Premium", nor "Spéciale".

Garrison / Beaus Sweet Rye’d 3.4
2015-09-08. Dark amber body with a small beige head. 3+ Aroma is mild, lightly fruity, mild rye character. Flavour is malty, light spicey rye notes, moderate bitterness. Light herbal touches. Lingering dry rye notes. Enjoyable. Bottle courtesy of Big Red.
Wednesday, September 09, 2015

Garrison Ol’ Fog Burner 3.7
Bottle split with Deyholla. Thanks for the Nova Scotia tick! Deep reddish pour with a small off-white head. Caramel, red apple and toasted biscuit. Some hot orange marmalade and booze. Rich. Taste is similar. Hot and sweet, sure, but this doesn’t lose the plot. Caramel and light woody bitterness. Hints of pepper keep things interesting. Substantial without feeling flabby. Actually pretty nice.
Tuesday, September 08, 2015

Garrison / Beaus Sweet Rye’d 3.5
Bottle - Lots of sweet caramel and some herbal notes. Clear gold with a decent beige head. Tastes as it smells, quite spicy and weird. Decent.
Tuesday, September 08, 2015

Garrison Grand Baltic Porter Rum Barrel Aged 3.9
Bottle shared at Chris and Ruth’s pre-GBBF tasting 2015 - London. Cheers to Scopey for this scoop. Pours clear amber-brown with a creamy, tan head. The nose holds plum, toffee and general ripe fruits. Medium sweet flavor with rich, gooey toffee, figs, mellow alcohol. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish, with more toffee and ripe fruits. Very tasty, and nicely balanced overall.
Wednesday, September 02, 2015

Garrison Oktoberfest Brau 3.6
Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange/amber colour with a brownish head. Aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon, malts. Flavour is of light coffee roast, malted barley, a bit of toffee, some spices. Somewhat bitter aftertaste. Leaves a bit of a tingly mouthfeel. Not too bad.
