Bricks & Barley Enchanted Winter Ale
Copper to brown in color, with a smallish beige head. Doughy fruit bread aromas. Full feel, with just enough zip to add to the spice. Spicy flavors of a mincemeat pie. Light lemon adds to the flavors. Dry bitter finish. A nice winter brew to mull things over. 4/13

Bricks & Barley Pilsner Style Lager
A decent, inexpensive Pils. B&B is the house brand of Mariano’s grocery store , A great alternative to Whole Foods. It’s brewed by the Stevens Point brewing company that makes along with its own Point bees a number of contract beers, the newest being Berghoff. This is an acceptable beer. Light and not filling. Not really hoppy enough for it’s style by at $7.00 a six pack it’s worth the price.

The grocery store I bought this at just opened so I figure it must be fresh but it tastes like its been around a while so how can I know? Oh, I dunno, maybe a date on the bottle or something... In any case, this is an example of a supposed craft brewer making a lager that is much worse than a normal, cheap American beer. It is clear yellow in color, mostly headless, sweet and lightly metallic. It smells of nutty oxidized malts and tastes like bitter soda water. This stuff isnkt the end of the world to drink or anything. I mean, I could down six of them if I was desperate but the fact of the matter is something like Budweiser or Coors just blows this out of the water for cheaper.

I suspected this brand would be crappy and was pleasantly surprised by the stout. This however, proves me right in my suspicions. It starts as a nice enough IPA. Decent orange color and a small head of nice, fine bubbles. The initial waft of hops is even pretty nice w/ a good bit of citrus. That fades fast though and while there is a decent balance of sweetness and bitterness, there is no real character to this aside from that. The hops grow metallic in the finish and the sweetness cloys as it warms. Ultimately neither the hop bitterness nor the heavy carbonation can stop this from feeling a bit thick and heavy. The more I drink, the more strange off notes from whatever oddly fruity variety of hops they used. Definitely, this is proving to be one of those fake craft breweries that doesn’t fool anyone.

Something told me this was gonna be pretty crappy when I bought it in a grocery store mixed six but its actually fairly decent. For starterss, its got a real nice deep brown color, cappped by just a little bit of an off white head. The aroma is only mildly roasty but a touch of bitterness brings out a nice, strong dark chocolate note once you taste it. The carbonation is a bit vigorous for something that calls itself an Irish stout but the lack of roastiness really makes this more of a porter to me anyway. The carbonation serves to lighten the palate and keep it drinkable. The finish is quick w/ just a slight lingering note of cocoa. I am not saying this stuf is going to give the best of its style a run for their money but it drinks fine just the same.

After some of their other beers, this was a pleasant surprise. Clearly oily both in appearance and body. Lots of plum and cinnamon in the aroma, and then the flavor adds a few layers of raisin, nutmeg, perhaps a touch of ginger...all very winter and seasonal. Well supported. A little crass, but enjoyable enough. Bottle.

Who can’t resist Pick ‘N Spend house beer? I know who should – me. But in a never ending quest to drink as many as I can from Wisconsin I buy everything but mega swill from the Badger state. Hazed amber with a thin off-white topper that rescinds quickly and leaves some thick ass lace on my glass. Aroma is everyday amber with caramel and some floral and vinous notes beneath. Taste is sweet with caramel and citrus and floral notes to boot with a moderate bitter finish. All in all, not awful and above my expectations.

Not a total disaster but there were real problems with this. Yellow with a quickly dissipating white head. The aroma was very strongly metallic and although that did not appear in the flavor it was a somewhat unpleasant there, too, with a thin profile. I struggled to get clear flavors like others reported. Bottle.

Bottle from Sussex Pick n Save enjoyed at Helfaer Field for Ben’s final appearance there. Aroma has pine, citrus and caramel, slightly skunky and malty. Taste is pine, grapefruit/orange citrus mix and thick caramel back. Medium bodied. Finishes thinner than expected for the maltiness in the body.

Picked up a single 12-oz bottle at Pick ’n Save in Marshfield, WI. Pours a semi-hazy golden straw colored brew with a fast dissipating off-white head that leaves behind only a thin ring and film top. Aroma of grassy hops, some golden grain malt, a hint of honey and light banana. Taste is medium bodied, soft carbonation with flavors of golden grain malt, a hint of banana, mild yeast and a touch of lemon zest. Finish is semi-sweet followed by a light yeast aftertaste that quickly disappears. More of an American wheat ale than a witbier.

Bottled. Poured deep garnet with a short, dense khaki head. The aroma picked up nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon over sweet vanilla and caramel.. tangy, lightly-metallic notes on the back of the nose.. OK. The flavor found sweet vanilla, caramel, and a bit of molasses at the core, with a tacky blend of spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and a little cardamom) around.. finished dry and a bit tangy. Lighter-bodied with a little too much reliance on spices on the palate.. overall quite drinkable, though.

Dark brown pour with no head. Nose is nutty with dry, roasted malt and notes of light caramel and toffee. Slight oxidation. Flavor follows suit with more of the nutty and roasted malt qualities with toffee. Dry roasty finish. Thin mouthfeel with lingering toasted malt, toffee, and caramel. Fairly bland with light off/uncharacteristic flavors.

Pours a opaque black with a small tan head mostly dissipating. Nose is coffee. Fairly creamy on the palate. This is a flavorful brew with taste of dark roasted barley, coffee and a hint of hops on the finish. A well done classic stout that pairs well with brats off the grill.

Bricks & Barley Belgian Style White Wheat
Pours a light yellow gold with a small white head. Bouquet is floral and spice. Very creamy on the palate, the taste is mild, of bread, yeast; slightly sweet; not much citrus or spices evident although they are listed on the bottle. Only an average Belgian style beer-Americanized-nothing like a true Belgian. OK to try but I won’t be stocking this one regularly in my fridge.

OK, I don’t have the specs or anything for this ale...just found it at the local Copps store. It’s exceptionally good--spicy (nutmeg & cinnamon?), chocolatey, medium-to-full-bodied, and very warming. I did a web search and can’t find out much in the way of specifics for the brew. I’m not sure what style it is, but it packs a bit of a punch; that’s why I classed it as an American Strong Ale.

Bottled. Poured cloudy peach with some big chunkies floating around in there.. creamy white head. The aroma picked up doughy malts and lesser wheat with accents of lemon zest and cloves. The flavor found the same doughy notes plus some honey at the core, with lightly tart wheat, lemon zest, and cloves around.. a little banana essence as it warmed.. finished tangy and refreshing, but with a kiss of odd metallic character. Light-bodied and tangy on the palate.. fairly refreshing.. OK overall feel and flow.

This is a great beer from a great 155 year old brewery. In my taste, lagers are one of the hardest beers to do really well. If you want an average lager, miller does good. If you want a fine crafted lager, this one will fit you well. I bought the whole B&B line today, and I’m looking forward to rating the others!

Bottle. Pours a dark reddish brown that I can just barely see through. A small layer of tan head leaves almost no lacing. Smells of roasted malt and cocoa nibs. Tastes like roasted malts, cocoa, and slight coffee. Not bad, a little light in body but goes down easy.

The aroma picked up sweet, toasty nutty and grainy notes with fresh, almost detergenty and vanilla accents.. coffee hit on the very back.. very sweet overall. The flavor found sweet vanilla, cocoa, and maple notes at the core with light-moderate roast to it.. more maple and a touch of dry roast on the mostly sweet finish.
