A nice stout with a solid body. Notes of coffee, toast, licorice and - of course - oats. The licorice makes the taste a little sweet for my liking.

The Grifter Hand in Hand
10 September 2022. On tap at The Scratch. This is a pale lager with a little bit of a twist flavour wise. Clean and crisp in the mouth with just a trace of lime in the flavour to give it a bit of a lift. Looks thin and a bit watery in the glass but is anything but thin and watery when you drink it.

The Grifter Pale Ale
375ml can. Poured with a tall, fluffy, lasting off-white head atop a clear amber body. Sweet-accented mango, peach, nectarine and tangerine aromas. Carries the aromas through to the palate but there’s a much more distinct maltiness. Can from The Beer Drop on 9 April 2022. Not ashtray smokey but still plenty smokey. The smokiness lasts all the way through until the last mouthful and even then it lingers in the mouth. Dark in colour with a tan head. All in all a good beer.

The Grifter Daisy Hazy Pale
From a can poured a clouded gold-yellow (looks a bit like pineapple juice) with 2cm of bright white open foam that retained very well and laced very well. Carbonation high, lively and very fine to fine. Aroma strong of mixed tropical fruits and hints of citrus (grapefruit). Taste is moderate to strong sweet tropical fruits (mango, pineapple) and citrus (grapefruit); quite fruity; gets a bit tart as the drink progresses; low to moderate bitterness, good for the style. Medium body. Smooth and slightly syrupy, crisp, clean, refreshing and dry with a medium length finish.

2.2
The Grifter Serpents Kiss
Day 20 of Mane Liquor Advent Calendar 2021.
Into a tulip, chilled. Sunny, yellow gold and just shy of bright. Bountiful in carbonation but struggles to retain a head. Aroma of Starburst watermelon candy and little else. On the palate it is astringent and dominated by two flavours. One odd being a green tomato flavour that hits mid-palate and lingers long between swallows. The other the obvious. Strawberry Starburst with a sweetness and odd plasticity to it. Watery and lacking body and carbonation it is drabby. Rather confused as to what this is!? Rather confused as to what the brewers were even thinking!? Not undrinkable or drain pour, but teetering on the edge. (37,5cL can, PKD 25/08/2021, Mane Liquor, Belmont)

ABV = 5.8%. BB 22/11/21. From a can poured an opaque black (even under strong light) with 1cm of dark tan dense foam that retained very well and laced very well. Carbonation low, slow and very fine. Aroma strongly of sweet dark chocolate with slight wood smoke. Taste is strong woody smoke, slight sweet vanilla and a slight earthiness; low bitterness; smoke is not over-powering, just enough to make it tasty. Medium body. Smooth, crisp, clean and refreshing with amedium-length finish.

Can. Very dark brown with a good cm of light tan head. Lots of smoke and some medicinal touches in the aroma with dark sugars and hints of prunes. Smooth texture with moderate carbonation. Smoke is a little less full upon a taste with sweet caramelised malts and light bitterness. Perhaps the recipe has been rejigged because I found the smoke a bit much.

The Grifter Big Sur
Poured from a can into a tulip glass. Juicy aroma with pine notes. Pours a hazy, amber colour with a huge fluffy off-white (slightly orange) head that holds well and dissipates to form consistent lacing and a high collar. Medium bodied and low carbonation with a modest oily mouthfeel. Complex flavours with initial malt and tropical fruits giving way to a hoppy aftertaste. You can also taste the alcohol in this brew. A smashing ale, but at 6.7% abv, a great beer after a lighter palette cleanser. Grifter becoming one of my favourite brewer.

Poured from a can into a tulip glass. Caramel notes in the aroma. Pours a cloudy, dark hazelnut with a reddish hue and a large beige head that holds well. Medium bodied with low carbonation. Subtle malt flavours with a decent bitter, dry finish. Pleasant, but too heavy for a session beer.
