Hophugger Pale Ale
Enjoyed on tap at a Fork and Brewer event in Wellington last year. Was a standout brew that drew me away from some of the in-house beers that were on offer. If you are looking for an antipodean pale ale you won’t go wrong with this.

Hophugger Pilsner
minimal aroma: mainly malty. Minimal head dissipates quickly with small lace. More amber in colour than typical pilsner. Highly hopped: more of an Ipa or pale ale than a pilsner. Dry bitter aftertaste. Overall its Ok

Hophugger Pilsner
(Tap) Good beer not really pilsner. Darkish gold colour thick head. Floral and citrus in aroma. Citrus and fruitity taste with bitter sweet finish. Medium to full body with high carbonation. Nice beer but not pilsner.

Hophugger Pilsner
Lightly hazed amber with a white head. Nose of oxidized cara malt / burnt grains / cookie batter / toast with mild Cascade-like hoppiness of orange oil, resin and celery. Husky texture, somewhat rough carbonation, milk powder / lactose. Huskiness combines with bitterness to leave the mouth a rough mess. Nut oil and bitter greens in the finish. Much like a Pale Ale in color, aroma and texture, much more than a Pilsner. Regardless, it’s pretty dull stuff. From bottle, best by October 2013 (shame on me for buying an old bottle).

Hophugger Pale Ale
I didn’t mean to, it just sort of happened. I meant to only have one pint and then move on to something else and before I knew it it was 11pm and I’d had seven pints of this beer and loved every single sip. My numbers for this beer gain from its sheer sessionability and I can categorically state that I will be going back for more. Pale orange to amber colour with a slight haze and a white head that followed the body down to the bottom of the glass. Aromas of summerfruit, peaches, passionfruit, lime peel and pomegranate. Dryish body with plenty of prickly sparkle and nice twinges of bitterness. Long finishing and thanks to the attentions of the bar staff, a pint that was almost bottomless. Bliss!

The head is good, the body light. It smells sweet, hoppy. The taste is hoppy, aromatic, fruity, bit malty, bit bitter. Nice and tasty!

Decent Pilsner. Zesty, tangy, but as below a little thin. But I’m being picky, if this was the first craft beer I’d ever drunk I’d probably have called it the best beer I’d ever drunk.

Hophugger Pilsner
Bottle at Tap Haus, Wellington. Clear gold/amber, subtle fruity, citrusy, piney hops, lacks a bit of body, but quite drinkable.

Draft at Fork and Brewer courtesy of Nath and Nath, thank you gentlemen! Clear golden yellow color, small white head. Aroma is very fruity, with a bit of citrus and straw. Taste is clean and crisp enough, but could use a tad more bitterness at the finish. Very sessionable, would be a great summer beer to drink in quantity.

Dull gold. Not much head. The aroma is bland and mainly malty. The palate is the same, not really an interesting brew.

Appears darkish amber similar to a Czech pils with a little haze and a thin white head. A bit of shake provokes a coarse greyish head that buggered off in short order, but that shake brings out plentiful grapefruit and gooseberry hops and apricotty malt. That blast of hops and malt in tandem give a tangy fruit and slightly piney bitterness and sweet desserty citrus and amber tartness. The finish is a continuation of those flavours that gives an enduring reminder of a beer that while not the most beautiful blonde in the bar, is the one you’re glad to have taken home. Most likeable.
