Asagaya Session IPA
clean malty nose. Full body. Modest hops. But really didn’t taste much different than my blonde. Ok

Asagaya Blonde
Cloudy golden color. Thick frothy white head. Looks the same as my wife’s session IPA. Grapefruity nose. Very refreshing light mildly hoppy. It was good on a hot August evening.

Asagaya Light Brown
I ordered the LBA (Light Brown Ale) 4.6% which pours a cola brown with a beige-tinted head of foam. The aroma is roasty chocolate and toasted oats. Again a hit of buttery diacetyl detracts and this isn’t hopped enough to hide it. The taste is chocolate syrup, sweet buttery caramel and roastiness. Riding the line between passable and messed up and leaning towards the latter.

Asagaya White
Takeout on tap from from the brewpub. Cloudy neon yellow color with a few soapy bubbles, no head to really speak of. Great aromas of clove and banana with some light wheat notes as well. Thin body, watery mouthfeel and a bit boozy even though this was the 5.4% ABV version. Some cardamom and pepper on the finish as well. Maybe trying to be more a witbier. It’s just OK. Needs some appearance work.

Asagaya Sodachi IPA
Takeout tap from the brewpub. Hazy gold with a nice soapy white head. Aromas of mango juice, papaya juice and passion fruit juice. Taste is fairly sweet tropical fruit punch juice with some light hop astringency at the end (I can’t even call it bitterness...it’s quite harsh). Thin body with a watery mouthfeel. Falls apart at the end.

Asagaya Black Ale
On tap in a takeout cup from the brewpub. Slightly hazy dark brown with a nice latte colored soapy head that dissipates fairly quickly. Big roasted coffee aromas with some toasted malt and molasses present. Medium body with with a slightly oily mouthfeel and average carbonation. Taste is more of the same with a roasted granola character present as well. Not bad at all

Asagaya IPA
On tap at the brewpub. Lightly hazy golden orange with a nice soapy off-white head. Really nice aromas of grapefruit, passion fruit and grassy hops. Average carbonation and body is a little watery. Sweet on the palate with a bitter finish. Caramel and sweet malt flavor overtakes the hops until the finish which is lightly bitter. Wish it had lived up to the nose. Still for the brewpub it’s OK.

Asagaya Koshihikari Ale
Draught at brewpub. One of their more interesting brews, decent sweet rice flavors and warming alcohol, not a great balance but quite original for a change.

Asagaya Light Brown
Draught at brewpub. Pretty muddy and murky as usual. Chocolate malt, mild dried fruit and nuts, light watery finish. Drinkable but too light-bodied to be memorable.

Asagaya Koshihikari Ale
At the brewpub in a takeout cup. Nice slightly hazy golden color with a huge soapy head that lingers for a bit. Aromas of rice, yeast and a slight funk on the nose (probably not supposed to be there). Medium body with average carbonation. Slightly creamy mouthfeel with a dry and crisp finish. Lots of rice present. Not bad, aside from the strange lingering funkiness that was in the background.

Asagaya Pale
On tap at the brew pub. Hazy golden color with a big off white head that dissipates fairly quickly, but leaves nice lacing throughout. Faint hop aroma...is that citra? Light carbonation with a slightly fuzzy mouthfeel. Medium body. A slight bit of tropical fruit is noticeable as it warms up to room temperature. Slightly dry lager-like finish. Just OK.

Asagaya Coffee Beer
On tap at brew pub. Really nice light roasted coffee aroma that is slightly floral but quite lasting throughout without being overbearing or bitter. Toffee and chocolate malt is also noticeable. Very mild on the palate with soft carbonation and hint of caramel sweetness. Nice malty finish that lingers just a bit. Body is a little too thin, but a really interesting effort.

Asagaya Blonde
6.2% ABV on tap at Asagaya Bakushu Dojo. Served in a glass jokki mug. Golden yellow color with a nice white soapy head. Really nice banana, orange zest, cinnamon and nutmug aromas present. Tastes the same but with a nice sour citrus note and clove. Mouthfeel is thin with a lot of carbonation. As it warmed up it lost a lot of its charm and moved almost toward a lager as far as mouthfeel. Dry finish. Too much carbonation in my opinion.

Asagaya Light Brown
Tap at the brewpub. Actually stronger than the brown which makes the name a little confusing. Rich brown colour hints of red, creamy off white head. Aroma is fruity, bit yeasty, touch of citrus, cocoa powder. Taste is berries, bready malt, fruity sweetness. Not what I expected but pretty nice. Easy drinking.

Tap at the brewpub. Murky brown colour, creamy golden head. Aroma is lightly spicy, bit of citrus, hoppy, booze and sweet malt. Taste is similar, not wildly exciting, but alright, sweet malty body and hoppy bitterness.

Asagaya Creamy
Tap at the brewpub, this version is Jan. 2. Pale blond colour, off-white bubbly head. Aroma is very creamy, quite herbal/medicinal, maybe aniseed. Taste is very herbal again, quite original. Maybe a bit too in your face for me. Not really creamy as expected, bit of twiggy hoppiness and bitter finish. Too medicinal for me, but will definitely try the next version when it is out.

Tap at the brewpub, this version was Jan. 5. Pale blond colour with white creamy head. Aroma is bit wheaty, citrussy, quite boozy, touch of creamy malt. Taste is wheaty, bitter, booze again. Not that strong, but tastes stronger. Touch of fruitiness, but indistinct. Quite dry and nice enough but something not quite there.

Tap at the brewpub. This version is Jan. 1. Small glass, dark brown, small gold creamy head. Aroma chocolate, bit of coffee, quite sweet, vanilla, roasty, lots of brown bread. Taste is nice, alcohol hidden, bitter chocolate, creamy vanilla in background, slightly burnt. Bit of fudge too. Really nice and easy to drink. Very smooth and not too thick. Bitter and roasty finish.

Tap at the brewpub. This was version Jan. 7. Cloudy orange amber colour, off white creamy head. Aroma is slightly hoppy, citrus, orange, touch of creaminess, bit biscuity.
