Diana Premium Lager 2.7
500ml can as Diana Premium Lager, bought in Thessaloniki, Greece and brought home, poured into a glass tankard. ABV 4.1% Deep golden yellow colour on the body with one finger of white head on top, froathy, diminishing quickly, leaving just traces of lacing around the glass. Aroma has malts, fresh grass, some refreshing lemon notes. Taste of malts, cardboard, hay, quite sweet but with a good enough bitterness on the aftertaste. Thin body with okay carbonation. Overall okay, I expected worse.

Boliarka Tímno 2.3
Canned 500ml. -Dark brown/almost black coloured, big and long-lasting beige head, caramel and cheap honey in the nose. Sweet caramel, light roasted malt and light coffee with notes of corn and alcohol in the finish. A way too sweet and quite strong alcohol notes for 5%ABV.

Diana Premium Lager 2.7
Can at home in Gabrovo, Bulgaria - picked up at the offie across the street. Pours perfectly clear yellow-gold, lightly effervescent with a soft, white froth head. The nose is all pale cereal grains with slight accents of white paper and lemon rind. Light sweet flavor with mild bitter hay, grain husk and citrus peel, plus more basic pale, grainy malt sugars. Light bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Crisp finish, slightly bland, with more somewhat papery pale cereal, mellow dry white bread and hay. A fair session pale lager.

Balkansko Svetlo 1.7
Poured from the 600mL glass bottle. The beer is a typical bright, pale gold color. Some light grainy malt up front. There is a good amount of bitterness here considering the style and the brand. Finishes with a kind of off taste and grass. Mouthfeel is average. Nothing noteworthy. Definitely not something I would seek out by any means, but you could do a lot worse I guess.

Bottle of 2.5L at the flat in Sofia. Pours perfectly clear gold, lightly effervescent, with a moderate, virginal white head. Dry grains in the nose, slight crunchy cereal and metal. Light sweet flavor with dried cereal, slight hay, very faint dough, metallic bite, straw. Light bodied with average carbonation. Crisp finish, relatively clean with further metal twang, mild dried cereal and hay. Hey, at least thereís no paper.

íDIANA LAGER- WORTHY OF YOUí. Very nice beer of Bulgaria for your enjoyingments, please. 500ml tin in Santorini. Headless flat gold. Aroma of watermelon, slime, fat and raki. Horribly papery, bicarbonate of soda-sprinkled cardboard and Disprin mouth. No malt, hop, yeast or even water notes on show. Irredeemably bad: undrinkable, worse even than Ey Zython.

big green plastic bottle 2500ml. -from Billa Razgrad, Bulgaria. Darker golden coloured, small to medium sized white head, some corn and honey in the nose. Weak malty, bready and notes of honey with moderate bitter finish. Cheap and surprisingly drinkable. Costs 0.90Ä, for example ordinary Carlsberg can from the same shop is 1.00Ä.

Stara Stolitsa Svetlo Pivo 2.5
2l bottle, courtesy of and shared with ogivlado, thanks! Poured a pale golden body with a small white head. Honeyish papery aroma. Honey dominates the taste too, going into a bitterish finish. Light peppery hopiness. Actually a lot better than one would expect upon seeing a Bulgarian 4.1%, 9P beer in a 2l bottle...
Tuesday, July 24, 2012

Schweik Cheshko Pivo 2.2
1.5l plastic bottle from a small kiosk in Ohrid, MK. An odd find. Pale golden body, bit fuller than most. Nose is sour-mettalic but not so awful, body is typical over-done macro lager. sourness is main idea here, body, flavor taste fall in line to norms.

Boliarka Svetlo 2.9
Fluorescent yellow. Small bubbles. Slightly herbal hop aroma, a bit doughy. Herbal hop with a light bite. Like a proper pils, with light sweetness at the end alongside moderate bitterness. Became a go-to beer on Cyprus.

Boliarka Svetlo 1.9
2 liter PET bottle from a Bulgarian shop. Unclear yellow colour, thin white head. Aroma of dough, hay, plastic. Flavour is medium sweet, bread, hay, light plastic bitterness. Light bodied, low on carbonation, watery.

Boliarka Svetlo 1.4
Bottle. Aroma of wort and some tobacco, it partly reminded me of a kvass. Taste is pretty much watery and low on bitterness but as it is rather worty, it rather stands out among other Bulgarian pale lagers. The cardboard in the taste spoils the fun, however.

Boliarka Svetlo 2
Tall can acquired in Paphos Romanian/Bulgarian market. Sickly yellow swill color with slimy small head. Served icy cold, smells alright. Just smelling clean cereal grains and some tin can. Thin and fizzy. Flavors are not bad. Finishes nicely dry with a decent bit of hop bitterness. Donít let it warm up too much and itís a drinkable pale lager.

Kings Premium 1.6
500ml bottle, shared at the Euston Tap on 15 January 2011. Many thanks to Leighton for bringing this back from Bulgaria. Pale yellow colour. Skunky boiled vegetable and paper in the aroma. Primarily more cardboard on the palate. Maybe a touch of cereal. Pretty poor really. My second Bulgarian beer and the worst by some margin.
