Big Shoulders Beer Company Reviews

Big Shoulders Hopapalooza IPA 2.6
Perhaps this beer doesnít like being in a bottle for a while or mine is old. Massive head on this thing thatís usually a sign of a beer thatís gone bad. But it doesnít taste as astringent as other beers Iíve had with abnormally high carbonation. Lots of pine and citrus rind, super-dry with almost no malt sweetness. Not horrible, but definitely not good.

Big Shoulders Hopapalooza IPA 2.9
Bottle. Pours a clear amber gold with a HUGE foamy white head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has lots of musty grass with a bit of pine and earthy grains backing. Flavor has lots of grains and bread with a bit of grass and an earthy pine note.

Big Shoulders Hopapalooza IPA 2.9
This was nearly a gusher for me so, you know, if itís close to August 2015 and you get a bottle of this, open it over the sink. It pours very cloudy orange w/ a huge rocky head that fills the hole glass and necessitates some patience to get the full bottle in the glass. It smells nice. Itís mildly piney w/ some softer citrus tones and a bit of pineapple Itís dry and bitter and seems like itís full bodied aside from being way over-carbonated. I am not sure if this picked up a bit of an infection or what but I have to assume something is off here. Still, I have to give it a lot of credit for still being a decent beer despite this.

Big Shoulders Beer Crosstown Wheat 2.7
This kind of a witbier, I guess, what w/ the corriander and all... but not really. Itís very cloudy, amber-tinged orange. It has a long lasting foamy head of mixed bubbles. It smells pretty nice, kinda floral w/ some banana and a touch of sweet citrus, which seems like its from the coriander. This kind of sweet, sticky and heavy feeling on the pallet which is too bad because otherwise this would have a nice interplay of fruity flavors going on. It finishes w/ a solid punch of earthy bitterness. This is kind of a near miss and I think the recipe and or process could be refined to where this is a really tasty, light beer. Itís just not there yet.

Big Shoulders Hopapalooza IPA 2.8
Horrible ipa. Should be classified as a Belgium Ipa. Has that banana fruity flavor with an unbalanced malt backbone. Finishes fruity and sweet. Pours a nice cloudy orange color. Had at home out of a bottle ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Big Shoulders Beer Crosstown Wheat 2.7
Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home on a Monday night. Iím not particularly a fan of this one, unfortunately. The wheat and lemongrass give this a soapy profile with spice notes. Just not for me.

Big Shoulders Hopapalooza IPA 3
Purchased at Bottles and Cans in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home watching playoff basketball on the last Sunday of April. Appearance is a cloudy golden brown with a thin white head. Aroma is malt and spice, rye, doesnít smell like an IPA. Taste is strange, lots of off flavors going on and this doesnít taste much like an IPA. Not a fan.

Big Shoulders Hopapalooza IPA 2.3
Rather disappointing. I think this is Big Shouldersí flagship brew. It smells good, and looks okay - but thatís where it ends. The flavor is just okay, and the mouthfeel is poor - really watery. Iíll avoid this one going forward.

Big Shoulders Windchill Winter Wheat 3.2
Pint pour at Clark st ale house. Dark brown colored beer with a tan head on it. Plenty of dark malts and heavy wheat nose as typical for dunkels. Some hops are noted, and plenty of malts in the taste. No alcohol kick. Pretty easy to drink. I liked it well enough

On tap at Poor Philís in Oak Park, IL. for this yearís A Tale of Two Parks Pub Crawl. Served as a full flight sampler, the color was a darkest brown, with a modest head of off white head foam that reduced quickly to a ring & film. and left some dots & dashes of lacing. The aroma was a not necessarily fresh nose of roastiness, chocolate, grain, and a bit of funky, resinous wood scent. Light bodied, with a lively, almost over carbonated nature, low hop bitterness, and moderate, toasted & roasted malt. No, or very little esters, phenols, or sweetness that are distinctive for the style, were detected. Didnít really work for me, but might give it a try again, maybe at another venue.

Big Shoulders Hopapalooza IPA 3.2
On tap at Pour Philís Shell Bar in Oak Park, IL. for this yearís Tale of Two Parks Pub Crawl. Dispensed to a shaker showing a hazed, golden hue, a frothy, soft white head with fair persistence, and good cling to the spots & strands of lacing. The aroma was a subtle nose of fruit sweetness, some citrus as grapefruit & orange, and a hint of resin. Light to medium bodied, with average carbonation, the taste contributed moderate, rindy, hop bitterness with some lingering quality, and fair malt to smooth a bit. Drinkable, but not that expressive to wow.

Big Shoulders Beer Crosstown Wheat 3.1
On tap at Pour Philís in Oak Park, IL. for this yearís Tale of Two Parks Pub Crawl. Served as a full sampler with a cloudy, straw color, with a modest layer of white head foam, and wavy streaks & spots of lacing. The nose was lightly sweet, grassy, floral, and citrus. I looked around to see if anyone had just gotten a hair cut, then concluded that a combination of the spice & lemongrass gave off a light, Pinaud aftershave scent! The taste continued the citrus and light sweetness in a light body, with lively carbonation, spritzy mouth-feel, and some dryness on the finish. Light, and decently quaffable.

Very fruity and tangy wheat ale, the lemongrass plays a big role in the taste, decent.

Big Shoulders Hopapalooza IPA 3
Pint on draft at Beer Bistro, Chicago. Sweet and hoppy aroma. Really foggy orange with a white foam rapidly disappearing on top. Mild citrus flavor, tame in general. Light to medium bodied. Easy drinking but a little watery and unextraordinary.

Big Shoulders Hopapalooza IPA 3.4
Pint pour at Flo & Santos. Poured a clear orange-yellow color with a medium white head that dissipates quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lace. Aroma of hops, citrus and malt. Light-bodied with flavors of hops, grapefruit and sweet malt. The finish is mildly bitter with a citrusy hops aftertaste. Above average overall.

Big Shoulders Hopapalooza IPA 4
Had it on tap at Owen & Engine (a gastro pub in Logan Square Chicago). Poured a clear amber hue, a light aroma and a thin head and light lacing. It has a very bitter dry hop taste.

Big Shoulders Hopapalooza IPA 3.3
Debut tapping at the Beer Bistro. Orangey and slightly cloudy, poured in a shaker glass. Has a short, whitish head. The nose has some decent Pacific Northwest hops to it. And I also get some of the malt. Very sharp and bitter hop taste to it. Malts are a little bit light. Rich, the founder says he wanted it to be a hop-forward since he thinks thatís what Chicago beer geeks like. Possibly since this is a fresh batch, itís just naturally more hoppy. Another big-on-hops IPA.
