3.6 Humboldt Red Nectar Keg at Eastburn, Portland, OR on 15/09/2009. Very nice amber, with a big nose of caramel, dry grain, berries and floral hops. Full bodied and nice hop/malt balance. Tuesday, June 16, 2020

3.5 Humboldt Nectar IPA On Tap pale yellow with a slight fog to it. Thin white head. Good clean fresh hop aromas and flavors. Dry citrus pithiness and a littel grassy sharpness at the end. Clean and light crisp finish. Sunday, July 14, 2019

3.2 Humboldt Nectar IPA Can in tulip (bottled on 08162018) Aroma: tropical fruit (mango, passion fruit, pineapple), but heavy metal scent (may come from the fact this beer is close to expiration) Appearance: Honey color, foamy white head with good retention Flavor: high bitterness with citrus note and sweetness from fruit, flavor profile is well-balanced, but lack of level Mouthfeel: medium CO2 level, smooth finish, not too bitter nor dry with finish Overall: this can of beer is not as good, but I would like to try another can of this beer . 3.4 Humboldt Nectar IPA Pretty sure I had this before and forgot to review. Saw on clearance for $1 at ABC Liquor so decided to sample again. About how I remember. Has some decent bitter hop for a 6.7% IPA, but still leaning towards the sweet/malty side in balance. The hops opens up as you get further into the sample, but the first few sips are a little too sweet. I agree this this is more East Coast/New England style vs. the West Coast that you would expect from a CA brewer. Has potential and one that has potential to be more...just can't rate it that high at this point. Friday, April 19, 2019

3.3 Humboldt Red Nectar Still having trouble distinguishing an "amber" from a "red" ale. This has flavors that resemble a red, but more amberish in appearance and strength. Light malt with a clean, fresh hop finish. Crisp and smooth mouthfeel. Better than average, but not really any wow factor here. Thursday, April 11, 2019

4.2 Humboldt Black Xantus First introduction from this brewer and Nectar Ales. Loaded with all kinds of flavors...a complex IPS. Not one of those over-the-top bourbon aged beers...as this is more on the subtle side. Still heavy and definitely made for sharing. Alcohol hidden somewhat, but you feel it for sure! A high rating...although I'd say it blends in with a lot of the others out there in this style. Monday, April 1, 2019

3.4 Humboldt Red Nectar 12 oz. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained ivory head, with moderate lacing, over a clear, dark amber body.....nose is dried fruit tones, with caramel, hints of mild sweet tones from the fruits, mild hop herbal tones, balance to the malts.......taste is slight sweet tones with mild dried fruit notes, caramel from toasted malts, slight hop tones on the finish, balance to the malts......mouth feel, medium light body, no alcohol, moderate carbonation. This is a significant variation from the more typical Amber Ale with multiple esters and complexity making for pleasant drinkability. BJCP 8/3/14/4/6 Monday, September 10, 2018

2.9 Humboldt Red Nectar 12floz bottle, no date, $1.75 unit cost, pint glass. Hoppy red ale, and not much more to add about this beer. There's just a thin layer of head, it's transparent, candy and biscuit aromas have to be thouroughly sniffed out, blandly bitter, and kinda thin in body. Not something to try again, although I believe that I had those before. Friday, May 11, 2018

4.3 Humboldt Black Xantus Interesting imperial that carries a sweetness expected with the high alcohol, but hides it behind floral overtones that lead one to understand the hummingbird on the bottle. Almost too much of a good thing Sunday, May 6, 2018

4.4 Humboldt Black Xantus opaque black color with cola brown around the edges. The pour produces a tight head of khaki colored foam that dies out quickly. Very rich aromas and flavors of black licorice, prunes, dark chocolate, rum soaked cigar, java, and toffee. Thursday, April 12, 2018

3.9 Humboldt Black Xantus Very interesting imperial. It doesn't have the typical bitterness & is quite smooth. Really good mouthfeel & licorice heavy which is nice! Sunday, February 25, 2018

3.4 Humboldt Black Xantus Thin light brown head of fine bubbles which dissipates rather quickly. Sweet malty aroma with lots of brown sugar, prunes, molasses and anise. Liquid raisin in a glass. Says that it is a coffee stout but I don’t get any coffee in the aroma. Color is basically black. Loads of sweetness in the flavor too. Tons more dark dried fruit. Raisins and prunes, molasses and a light overtone of coffee is present. Lots of flavor and body which hides its alcohol well. Finishes sweet and sticky. I am thinking all this sweetness may be a big headache in a bottle. Tasty brew though. Sunday, February 4, 2018

3.7 Humboldt Black Xantus Bottle at Black Christmas 2017 Black color. The character comes from the dark malts, it has good body strength, some chocolate, hint of spices, and some acidity. Good. Thursday, December 14, 2017

4 Humboldt Black Xantus A pour from the bottle on Black Christmas V. Pours a very dark brown with a dark beige head. Aroma is berries, leather, and lots of bready notes. Similar taste with fruity notes. Good one. Sunday, December 10, 2017

3.5 Humboldt Black Xantus Pours dark brown with small head. Aroma: a lot or roasiness, caramel aroma, a touch of bourbon and a lot of cocoa and coffee. Taste: massively on the roastiness side, cocoa, chocolate, also dark fruit and cranberries. Palate is a bit warming from alcohol but also nicely bitter. Wednesday, November 29, 2017

4.2 Humboldt Black Xantus Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall rich brown head that fades relatively quickly, still. Aroma of pure honey, roasted malts, hazlenuts, earth, grain, caramelised sugars, toffee and a bit of pure pit fruits like raisins and nice fresh figs. Full-bodied; Rich roasted malt flavour with a big dose of chocolate and some lighter coffee notes along with a touch of grain and earthiness near the backend. Aftertaste shows more of the alcohol warmth, some pungent grain, caramel, toffee, earth, roasted malt, burnt toast and some coffee hints and finishing with some more robust sweetness with the raisins and darker cacao notes coming through. Overall, a very complex and robust beer with the sweetness definitely hanging around, but this is all about the earthy notes - the roasted grain, coffee, chocolate, pit fruits and the alcohol warmth that hits throughout. Nice to sample and definitely well worth keeping this in the bottle for a while, perhaps I should have aged mine even longer! If I get another bottle of this, I'll keep it for 5+ years to see if the flavours get a little less harsh and more refined. I sampled this 65 cL bottle in celebration of bringing my newest son home, since he was born yesterday, while I purchased this beer just after my previous daughter was born. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Costco in Pentagon City (Arlington), Virginia on 04-July-2015 for US$11,99 sampled at home in Washington on 03-November-2017. Saturday, November 4, 2017

3.8 Humboldt Black Xantus 22 ounce bottle A respectable imperial stout does everything it says on the label. It falls just shy of being exceptional though if you like beers packed with flavor that is one thing it can deliver. I'm not excited enough to wish I had another bottle. If you're looking for a South Carolina rate and cannot score an alternative buy one. If you want to knock out another imperial stout give it a short. Otherwise check the shelves first before you pick up a bomber. Aroma / Appearance - The deep oily black base crawls downwards with the body profile that is standard for all high gravity stouts. Raspberries, dark fruits, burnt chocolate, and coffee emerge from the pockets of mocha head that attempt to smother the core. Flavor / Palate - Smoke, black coffee, and dark fruits permeate the palate with a strong forward focus. The booziness never becomes distracting but you will not mistake this for a session beer (or even an average java stout). The dry malty finish cements its place as a typical well executed imperial stout. If you haven't tried hundreds of others it might make a good benchmark for the style's baseline of "average".
