AleCraft South Pacific Pale Ale
Hand pull, Lord Hop, Nuneaton, 02/01/16. APA but Australasian of course. Lightly veiled gold with a slender white lid. Aroma of sliced ginger, sticky buds, unspecified soft mouldering fruit- possibly melons. Soapy, floral and bitter without specific fruits emerging. Husk, ginger again, maybe grapefruit. Bitter finish. Good but a bit muddy and lacking exoticism.

Cask at the farmers boy St Albans. Clear light yellow coloured pour with a thin white head. Aroma is tart citrus, cif, lemon cleaner, pithy. Flavour follows with light grains, sharp lemon, tangy. Not really what I would consider Nelson sauvin character. Palate us light, semi sweet and sharp, lowish carbonation. Not terrible.

AleCraft Sonoma I2pa
Bottle from St Albans bottle shop’s stand at St Albans farmers’ market. Light copper in hue with a thin but lasting white head. On the nose I got pleasant pine and apricot; the first sip was harsh in comparison with petrol, raw alchohol and a little plastic. But then bitter marmalade gained the upper hand and I started to quite like it. Nevertheless it remains pretty rough stuff; a real tough frontier homebrew kind of beer.

My bed was shit - a DIPA from Fergushire (no not Ferris!), thanks to Fergus split in Leightons hub, 02/09/14. Hazed golden amber with moderate off white spotting and edgework. Nose is bitter orange, light plastic strains, raw hoppage, straw, tangerine. Taste comprises bitter orange, citric pith, straw, tangerinedom, earthy hop rinse. PS - did Leighton sketch out the label on his bike along with the Late Knight ones he did for the tasting at Chriso’s a few weeks earlier ?

Cask at the St. Albans Beer Festival 2013. Poured a black colour with a scummy tan head. Unpleasant aroma of stewed fruit, ash and sharp acidic notes. Very, very sweet flavours; liquorice, boiled sweets, treacle, no balance. Sickly sweet on the palate as well. I admit that I don’t like sweet dark beers, but this was undrinkable...

Handpulled cask at the Mermaid, St. Albans. Pale gold with a white head. This is a seriously classy beer with an abundance of resinous hop characture. Gooseberries and grapfruit seem to dominate but balance with a fresh sweet malt profile.

Cask (gravity) Coventy CAMRA BF. It’s Thornbridge Kipling lite - and that’s a compliment. Superb grapefruit nose - it really is the sauvignon blanc touch - with some lemon drop kidology backed up by a wafer thin sweet malt vein running through an aromatic body.

AleCraft Sauvin So Good
Cask @ The Wenlock. Golden with a thin white head. Great conditioning, as mentioned, and I must say this batch was much better than the next time around. Right away grapefruit and orange rush up your nose with fresh cut grass and pine following shortly behind. Taste is much the same, heavy citrus, perfectly balanced bitter hops and a lovely dry finish. On par with Brewers gold imho. At this point I have a limited knowledge of hops but what I do know is that sauvin appear to be my favorite to date.

A Mes rate: Bright bottled from the Wenlock.
A huge truckload of thanks to Terry Tibbs for bringing this one back. Absolutely astounding stuff. Lovely golden blonde with a slight haze. Slim white head and some lace. Instantly cloudy with a swill and a great settle. Outstanding condition. Incredible grapefruit hop aroma. Pine, spruce, grass and everything else you could ask for. Sublime bitter hop flavour. Heavy grapefruit and citrus, beautifully aromatic and floral with an incredible dryness. Makes me smack my lips and make noises of satisfaction after every sip. So dry, so bitter. This has clearly confirmed to me that Alehouse really know what they are doing. Awesome stuff.
