3.4 Boatyard Hazy Sunset Draft to rocks glass. Looks decent; not hazy though. A mostly transparent lemony gold with white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells of fruity hops with a mildly to moderately bittersweet backbone that's more sweet than bitter. Tastes like it smells with some caramel as well. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied and slightly syrupy. Still, a solid IPA. Sunday, July 22, 2018

4 Boatyard Hazy Sunset My favorite NE IPA so far. Juicy flavor with more aroma than many of the style. Also has a bit more hop bitterness on the finish. Tuesday, October 24, 2017

2.7 Boatyard Kirkenberry Sour can. golden with one finger head. for a sour, this isn't the least bit sour. there's some mild blueberry flavor, and then a bitterness that doesn't fit at all. I have no idea what they were going for here, but safe to say they missed it. Saturday, October 21, 2017

3.7 Boatyard EZ Ale 16 ounce can into pint glass, canned on 7/27/2016. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy golden amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense and rocky off white head with amazing retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts the whole glass. Thick soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of lemon, orange peel, coriander, peach, pear, red apple, wheat, cracker, white bread, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity yeast, spices, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of lemon, orange peel, coriander, peach, pear, red apple, wheat, cracker, white bread, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Slight wheat tang. Lingering notes of lemon, orange peel, coriander, peach, pear, red apple, wheat, cracker, white bread, biscuit, herbal, floral, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, spices, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance. Touch of lingering hop/spice astringency through the glass, but not overwhelming. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp, bready/grainy, and lightly sticky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.6%. Overall this is a nice American pale wheat ale. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity wheat yeast, spices, bready malt, and light-moderate earthy hop flavors; very smooth, crisp, and refreshing to drink; despite the increasingly bitter/drying finish. Just a bit too bitter/hoppy, but very well made for the style otherwise. A nicely enjoyable offering. Thursday, September 28, 2017

4.1 Boatyard Hazy Sunset 16 ounce can into tulip glass, canned on 11/9/2017. Pours fairly hazy deep golden amber color with a 2 finger dense and rocky white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper/pine, wheat, biscuit, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, lemon zest, orange peel, light pepper/pine, wheat, biscuit, light honey, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very mild pine, citrus peel, grassy, spicy bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berry, lemon/orange peel, light pepper/pine, wheat, biscuit, light honey, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and bready malt flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and zero lingering hop astringency after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and slightly sticky mouthfeel that is fantastic. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 6.5%. Overall this is a fantastic NEIPA. All around outstanding complexity, robustness, and balance of citrus/fruity/tropical hops and bready malt flavors; very smooth and refreshing to drink, with the very mildly bitter/drying finish. Very juicy, vibrant, and dank hops; balanced malts and no residual sweetness. Glad they revamped the recipe and ABV. Used to be quite rough and increasingly drying on the finish. Now it's pretty much a perfect example of the style, amazingly soft mouthfeel. A highly enjoyable offering. The Citra, Mosaic, Amarillo hop profile is fantastic. Thursday, August 31, 2017

2.9 Boatyard Kalamazoo Cream Ale Aroma is clove, earthy hops, banana, sweet, strange for the style. Appearance is hazy, golden amber, off white head. Taste is clove, banana, earthy hops, malty, booze, permanent marker, this tastes a lot like a saison. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light carbonation, dry bitter clove aftertaste. Overall, is this the right beer? If this is a cream ale, it’s pretty far from the others I’ve tasted. I do like saison, though. Tuesday, May 23, 2017

3.8 Boatyard Banyan Brown Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a semi-hazy brown color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a mild pace. Messy lace. The aroma consisted of soft sweet and roasty nuts, some caramel/toffee malts, light cocoa powder and a touch of vanilla to round it out. The flavor seemed to lean towards the sweet side. Slightly developed the roasty side of the nuts ever so slightly but that even had a hard time trying to come out. Nice smooth and blended aftertaste of the malts and the roasty nuts. Barely any finish. The feel was between light and medium bodied with a pretty good sessionability about it. ABV almost made me think twice, was this an imperial brown ale? But the alcohol seemed controlled as to hide itself fairly nice. Overall, pretty nice brown ale, not sure which one of the three I liked the best, maybe this one. I’d have to give them all another go if I could go at them again. Tuesday, May 2, 2017

3.7 Boatyard Big Wave Brown Reviewed from notes. The appearance as a slight dark burnt amber almost brown color with a finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off fairly quick. Some messy lace. The aroma had some caramel/toffee malts playing with some anise, sweet nuts and toast. Light butterscotch. The flavor was mostly sweet with the anise want to make a slight sharp sort of spice to it. Did it? Not really, in my opinion. Slight malty sweet sort of aftertaste, barely any finish. The feel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt fine. ABV felt fine. Overall, pretty good brown ale. I’d have again if I could get it. Tuesday, May 2, 2017

3.9 Boatyard Bimini Brown Reviewed from notes. The appearance was a soft muddy copper almost brown color with a half finger’s worth of white foamy head that fell off at a decent pace. Mild sliding stringy lace. The aroma consisted of some sweet and roasty nuts, light earthiness, caramel/toffee malts and a light rye spicy to sweetness. The flavor leaned towards the sweet side initially and then ever so subtly had the rye slide in underneath. Not much of an aftertaste, somewhat malty but the finish seemed to have a little bit of rye in it. The feel was about medium bodied, perhaps just a touch under. Malts do a good job of smoothing out some of the spicy harshness that never really invades. Good carbonation. ABV felt good as projected. Overall, good brown ale and I like the idea of adding some rye in there. Tuesday, May 2, 2017

2.2 Boatyard Lake Effect Double IPA Reviewed from notes. Thanks Mike. This was poured into a tulip. The appearance was a semi burnt orange to copper color with a light off white foamy head that dissipated at a moderate pace. Some messy lace. The aroma had a lot of malts up front, thick and biscuit-like with some earthy and butterscotch-like tones. Hops seem somewhat leathery and burnt. The flavor, well, that left a little bit to be desired. It was somewhat sweet and had some acetone to it. Aftertaste was the same. The finish was quite metallic. On the palate, this one was between light and medium on the body with a not much of any sort of sessionable sort of trait to it. Metallic seems to clench a bit more than expected on my tongue. Overall, well, Mike, not sure if you meant this as a joke or maybe I didn’t send enough Heady Topper. Thanks butmunch. Friday, April 28, 2017

2.8 Boatyard Scuttlebutt IPA Can. Amber body with a big, frothy off-white head. Aroma of leafy hops, pine, grapefruit peel, light caramel, toasted grain. Pours lightly hazy very dark brown color with a 2-3 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a large cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a large amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of cracker, corn, toasted biscuit, spicy rye, cream, light cocoa/coffee/nuttiness, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roast/bready/rye malt, lactose, and light earthy hop notes; with good strength. Taste of cracker, corn, toasted biscuit, spicy rye, light cocoa/coffee/nuttiness, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/roast bitterness and rye spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of cracker, corn, toasted biscuit, spicy rye, light cocoa/coffee/nuttiness, herbal, and roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of roast/bready/rye malt, lactose, and light earthy hop flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from roast/hop bitterness and carbonation. Medium-high carbonation and medium body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/grainy, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 5.4%. Overall this is a very nice beer! Feels like a cross between a cream ale, brown ale, and dry stout overall. 3 Boatyard Midnight Star Ale I’ll just add in my thoughts on the style, as the previous two reviewers have. I would consider this specialty grain, as it is brewed with rye, though I could see this as a scottish or even a brown ale. I’m not sure it has the ABV to be an American strong. Anyway, pours a dark brown with a very foamy white head. Aroma is earth, biscuit, and cardboard. Flavor is spicy rye and sweet lactose. Has a smooth, light body. This is okay. 2.2 Boatyard Lake Effect Double IPA 16 oz can shared by ebone1988. The pour is a dark orange copper with a thin light tan head that falls to a thick collar and light film with a bit of soapy lace left behind. The aroma is malt for days. There is a light metallic sweetness and a bit of a chemical cleaner on the back end. There is t any hop or bright bitter presence. There is a little bit of a Belgian thing happening which I’m not happy about. The flavor is worse. It’s metallic and sweet. There is a strong malt that turns metallic and a bitterness that is almost caramel in flavor this is a mess all over. The mouth feel is heavy with a soft carbonation and a terrible lingering malt and metal aftertaste. Thanks Eric; asshole. Sunday, July 17, 2016

1.9 Boatyard Lake Effect Double IPA Can shared with koleminer20. Aroma is malt, citrus, some banana, tropical fruit, booze, reminiscent of a wheat wine in my opinion. Appearance is also wheat wine-ish, rust orange, clear, light tan head. Taste is also wheat wine, caramel malt, pine, candy, tropical fruit, overly and aggressively malty. Mouthfeel is solidly medium body, light soft carbonation, butterscotch hard candy and pine aftertaste. Overall, way way off. Sunday, July 17, 2016

Pours fairly hazy reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soaply lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of juicy/lightly tart raspberry, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, wheat, toasted biscuit, light chocolate/nuttiness, light herbal/pepper/clove, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, raspberries, and light earthy hop/yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of juicy/lightly tart raspberry, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, wheat, toasted biscuit, light chocolate/nuttiness, light herbal/pepper/clove, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/spicy bitterness and fruit tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of raspberry, caramel, brown sugar, brown bread, wheat, toasted biscuit, light chocolate/nuttiness, and yeast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, raspberries, and light earthy hop/yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitter/spiciness, that increases through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, creamy/grainy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Minimal warming alcohol as expected of 5.4%. Overall this is a very nice fruited American dark wheat ale. 1.7 Boatyard Halekai Very Pale Ale Pours a mostly clear gold with a thin eggshell head that leaves some spotty lace. Nose unfortunately came across as dirty and musty with some notes of plastic and a light chemical character. Very little if any sweetness, quite bitter. Light bodied, fairly active, grippingly dry, with a rubber and soil-like finish. I don’t really think this is what they intended with this beer. The hops contribute crazy amounts of bitterness and no aroma. I don’t know where all the weird aromas are coming from...yeast issues maybe? Line issues? This beer had no enjoyable qualities, and seems like it needs to be retooled or something else is going on. Sunday, January 17, 2016

2.4 Boatyard Midnight Maple Nitro pour, listed at 6.1% ABV on the board and also categorized as a "black cream ale," so there you go. Very dark ruby brown to black pour with a taller cappuccino foam colored head that leaves a ring of ropes and some spots of lace. Nose involves initial maple sweetness, graininess, some nuts. Lighty sweet, somewhat bitter. Light empty body, fairly active, with an almost tart and drying finish. A cool idea, but there just isn’t much to it. I’m not the biggest maple fan, so it doesn’t help that maple was the main aroma component. It just seems like some things are missing that could move this up a few notches.
