Barn Door Spring Bock
December 4, 2014 - with blankboy, gregclow, jercraigs and mabel - 500ml bottle. Some tiny black floaties in light amber pour with a solid plug of foamy shiny off-white head. Bock aroma - roasty cocao and poopy fruit. Taste - ehh - sweaty/sweet malt and funky bitter - just a big ol’ "whatever" in a glass. Meh.

November 6, 2014 - with blankboy, gregclow, jercraigs and mabel - bomber. Clear refractive red-amber with a large lasting tan head. Smells like a red ale; nuff said (sweet and meh); taste is floral, sweet, diacetyl - not good - like stale candy, grainy cinnamon hearts. Airy, solid carbonation, a little watery, sweetly harsh in the finish.

On tap at Louis Cifer. Pours a dark chestnut brown with modest-sized light tan head. Aroma is roasty, verging on smoky, with dark chocolate and nuts. Flavour is also very roasty/nearly smoky with some semisweet chocolate, a prominent nuttiness and a hint of spiciness. Relatively gentle carbonation. Slick mouthfeel. Solid.

slight murk but not much with big white head. Quiet aroma and not filled with lots of noble hops and hay; not to say they aren’t there just the yeastyness dilutes those noble hops a bit. on the palate it find a bit more tart than expected and the bitterness is a bit more from a texture thing than overcarbonation. Surprinsing and worth having no more than 3 but more than 1.

[Bottle (500ml) shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow, jercraigs & mabel -- c/o j&m] Pours a deep orange-amber with an average size semi-lasting frothy off-white head. Aroma of toffee, caramel malt, grain and bread. Flavour’s the same, caramel malt, toffee, grain and bread and maybe adds a bit of fruit. Average bodied. Didn’t much care for this that much, too average and mediocre.

Notes of caramel and biscuity accents to the cereal grains. Average plus bodied palate, soft carbonation. okay, bit dull overall and the grainy character is not to my tastes but not bad. Bottle, shared with friends on game night. Deep auburn with a light gold compact head. Very sweet brown sugar aroma, fruity undertones. Flavour of maple syrup, brown sugar, raisins. This was nice and malty, but just a bit too sweet for my liking-- glad I shared it.

I’ve liked Barn Doors beers to date. This is a bit of a miss. Pours a cola-like mahogany with tan head. Toasted and a little hay malts on the nose, and a good belt of sticky honey. The taste delivers a big belt of syrup accompanied by roasted malt. Since this essentially a Halloween beer I suppose that demanding sweetness is apropos, but I’m already getting enough raw sugar stealing all my kids chocolate bars after they go to bed, so no. Call out the villagers with torches on this one.

2014/11/11 - Pours a clear mahogany colour with a creamy beige head that slowly dissipates. Aroma is sweet grains, caramel, raisins and smokey notes. Taste is sweet cereal grains and caramel, mild dark fruit notes, bread, brown sugar and a hint of toasted/smokey malt. Very sweet. Mouthfeel is full and slick with smooth carbonation and a sweet, slightly boozy finish. Good, but sweetness is a little much. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark brown pour, with a medium to large beige head. A very bready, and sweet malt aroma, with subtle dark fruit. The malt lasts throughout, but the sweetness gives way to some slightly grassy hops in the end, with a medium to low bitter finish. More of a dunkelwiesen bock if you ask me.

Pours a slightly hazed bright yellow colour, with an amber hue pending on the light angle. The head is a little warm, creamy with decent retention and foamy lace. Mild bread malt aromas with some spicy notes and fruity yeast to balanced things. Light alcohol is present everywhere, just slightly warming things. Bread malts for taste as well with some fruitiness and nice smooth grassy hop finish which has a little dryness. A little hoppier marzen with milder cereal malts than most.

750ml bottle from the LCBO. Pours a brown/reddish colour. Aroma is that of un-fermented sugars, bread, fruit and some esters. It tastes a bit sweet, some molasses and fruit notes, with some bread. I find it lighter body than expected and more sweet than I like it. Meh, it is okay not great. plus given the format that it comes in i’m not that likely to purchase again.

500 mL bottle. A much better tasting brew than I expected; this is a proper Oktoberfest. Pours copper-orange with a film of white head. Bread and fruit there in the nose. But the flavour is excellent - crisp, just sweet enough, grain and just underripe orchard fruit. Very good body for the style. A nice surprise.

750 mL bottle from the brewery. Pours dark, with little head. The style is indistinguishable from the nose, with aspects of porter, cascadian, doppelbock, and irish ale. Much the same from the taste. This one is hard to categorize. And that’s alright by me. Because it tastes good. There are some unfermented sugars up front, but otherwise this is a tasty, interesting beer.

500 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a clear, deep orange colour with quickly disappearing white head. Gently toasted bread, sweetish caramel and light fruitiness in the aroma. Flavour is fairly, though not overpoweringly, sweet with lots of bread, decent amount of caramel and fruit, bit of toastiness and a little spicy character in the finish. A little slick in the mouth. Decent.

Bottle. Golden-amber with a small white head. Bright and fairly clean aroma of toasted grain, light caramel, candied orange. Medium bodied, a bit under-carbonated, making it slightly sticky on the palate. Good flavour, though - nice balance of sweet caramel-leaning malt, spicy Saaz hops, and a hint of prickly alcohol warmth in the finish. Could use a bit of refinement, but still a pretty nice brew.

Pours a clean deep amber colour with a light-beige frothy-creamy head, good retention and some creamy lacing. So much butterscotch in the nose, seems like a lot of diacetyl in here. The taste is not as bad, but still, butterscotch with some fruity notes and decent bitterness from the hop in the finish. Not bad tasting, but a little too rich in diacetyl, so would not have again.

750 ml bottle from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep mahogany with a thin tan head. Aroma: Richly malty, quite fruity and sweet, dark dried fruits, lots of brown sugar, light esters, almost Belgian really, toasty/bready, a touch of diacetyl, so rich and malty. Palate: Medium-full body with moderate carbonation. Flav.: Much like the nose with a very malt-forward character, lots of swet, sticky, fruity malts, basically no hop presence, a touch of tangy/bright fruitiness; somewhat sweet with sufficient bitterness for balance and a long, deeply rich, malty, fruity finish.

Monstrously good.

Barn Door Oktober Fest Beer
500 mL bottle from LCBO served cold in a tulip glass. Clear light amber with a wispy white head. Rich sweet maltiness, good melanoidin, lightly toasty, gas some esters and maybe a slight solvent note which indicates fermentation issues, no hop aroma to speak of. Medium body, medium-ish carbonation, a little flaccid. Rich, sweet maltiness, similar to the nose, still a bit too fruity, unclean for a lager; lightly sweet with gentle bitterness and a sweet malt finish. Fermentation needs work, I think.

Hazy golden appearance, with almost no head at all, which is disappointing, But that’s where disappointment stops, and gives way to pure bliss. This beer has incredible balance of hops that does not over whelm while giving really great taste to this beer. Smooth and not overly fizzy, this beer is great tasty thirst quencher. Leaves scuttle after taste that has almost beef jerky taste.

Bottle, Embrun LCBO. Very dark brown, small frothy white head. Slight diacetyl in aroma, along with some chewy sweet malts. Taste is decent - more chewy caramel malts, some chocolate hints, and a warming alcohol finish. Lots of caramel as it warms. Pretty decent beer save for the slight off aroma. I’ll admit my guard was a bit when I did not see the brewery’s name featured at all on the front label and on the back a mention that it was produced by something called Provincial Beverages of Canada, with multiple locations. I’ll have to do a bit of research.

Bottle, LCBO. Still looking dark yellow, very little head. Malty aroma, toasty. Medium to full mouthfeel - under carbonated. Slight diacetyl up front, fades. Tasty caramel sweet malt. Dry, clean finish, with some hop bitterness and alcohol warmth there as well. Decent stuff, just a bit rough around the edges as presented here. Bottle, Embrun LCBO.
