Steel & Oak Zonophone
Can from Bottle Jockey bought in February 2023 for $4.50 CAD, cellared for 1 year. - crisp smooth choco malt, soft lvl4-sweetness, bright tangy metallic prickly, dark bittersweet berry fruity roast, astringent sweaty diaper, light cacao nutty, roasted barley raspberry. - mostly smooth other than a bit of "wet diaper" flavour or bandaid in the mids. Cacao, roast and raspberry are all there.

473ml can. Pours a cloudy gold yellow with yeast particles that sink to the bottom and a small, creamy, long lasting, white head that leaves soapy curtains of lace. Sweet fruity aroma of bready wheat malt, orange, peach, pineapple, passionfruit, earthy yeast and herbal hops. Sweet fruity flavour of bready wheat malt, grapefruit, apricot, pineapple, oats, earthy yeast and pine needles in a dry, bitter finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Juicy and hoppy.

Can from Legacy LRS, Vancouver
Pale blond colour, cloudy. Nice aroma, tropical fruits, almost delicate. Soft mouthfeel, a bit starchy, little residual sweetness; the hop is more vegetable than fruity, there's light hopburn.
Not an elegant, nor a clean Hazy; it's ok.

16oz shared with Alex (thx for the beer, man!) @ home. Appearance: hazy blonde with a white head. Aroma: tropical fruits, a bit sweet. Taste: along the same lines, quite bitter in the finish, like a lot of very bitter grapefruit. Not thick enough for DIPA. Overall: just ok, too bitter for me.

Blond, a darker shade, hazy. The aroma is mild, but nice, with bready character. Dry and crisp mouthfeel; nice malt base, fresh breadcrust, biscuits, chewy (7+); the bitterness is decent as well, with grassy and spicy touch. Clean beer, very good.

Re-rate: Poured from 473mL can (leftover saved from beerplace/fiulijn tasting). Same rating, but not as bright - still decent, but -0.1 for mouthfeel. Okay. Mar 09, 2024 (7/3/8/4/16=3.8): Poured from the tap @ Superflux (Superflux lists it as 8% ABV on the menu?). Murky yellow with small white head. Lots of tropical hops, some grapefruit, quite nice.

Opaque, just a thin head. Bright papaya and apricot hop aroma. Juicy palate, a fair bit of sweetness up front, grapefruit and peach. The bitterness builds on the tongue quickly. A touch of chalk but mostly bright juiciness. I hope Superflux was taking notes because if they learned how to make IPA from S&O the way S&O learned how to make lager from Dageraad, that kind of knowledge transfer would benefit the craft beer scene here a lot.

Hazy amber with a fairly thick head. The bergamot is a pretty nice accent to floral, fruity hops and a lightly caramelly malt base. I’d prefer a pure pale malt base on this, however.

Steel & Oak Blackberry Apricot Sour
Pinkish and opaque. Nice bright fruit - I'd say the berries are dominant and the apricots lend juicy acidity in the finish. I wonder if these are the train track blackberries from behind the brewery. Anyway, it comes together well.

Steel & Oak Blackberry Apricot Sour
On tap at Farmhouse Fest 2023, pours a cloudy bright pinkish amber with a small white head. Aroma brings out pithy stone fruits, blackberry, and a hint of apricot — lots of lacto in back. Flavour is a full on kettle sour, with blackberry pith, lacto, and more lacto. Too much kettle sour nonsense here. Lame.

Copper colour, clean and bright. Aroma of bread, and caramel. Full bodied; the malt profile is very bready, it doesn't have the depth of a Barley Wine, but it's tasty; strong bitterness, touch of toffee, and some alcohol in the finish.

Opaque, pale, medium head. Aroma has a lot of banana, pushing the limits, wheaty, lends this a fair acidity, med-full body. On the palate, yup lots of banana. A slight wonkiness here, the ferm still needs a little work, but it’s not far off, I think the temp went a touch high.

473mL can, pours a hazy bright golden orange with a small white head. Nose brings out a lot of the prickly pear upfront, with a touch of guava, and subdued citrus hopping. Flavour is largely a function of the tropical fruit -- the guava and prickly pear in particular -- followed by a hint of slightly tart passionfruit and subdued citrus hopping. None of the usual chalky nonsense or hopburn, thankfully. This comes across more like a slightly hopped tropical fruit beer than an IPA. Whatever it is, it's fine, but not interesting.
