Not bad for a basic brown. Sort of a New Castle style with a bit sweet, a touch watery, and the end has some bitter nut malts. Clear brown coloring. Not exciting. Tap at brewery.

McCoys MO Sour Bruin
Draft on tap at the Public House (Kansas, City, KS). A sour tick in Kansas City.. How bout that? Pours a darker deep copper brown hue, transparent body shows some dulled but apparent reddish glow, some brownish auburn tinges with frothy offwhite head atop. A decent layer sits atop, mellow film but full laces well enough. Aromas show tinges of tart cherry, gentle stone fruit and bready malts. Some bready malts, a faint toast with gentle yogurt and lactic elements seeping in slowly as it warms. Mellow but enjoyable. Initial is lighter end of the fold in body, a bit fuzzy and prickly as some decent sour jabs really hit with touches of cherry, faint biscuit and tart and sweet stone fruit dance in and out. A bit lactic and prickly, the sourness really starts to grab me. Some yogurt, a bitt wangy and dry with gentle red wine elements cutting in. Nothing offensive, even keeled with nice lactic jabs, gentle red wine, cherries and faint balsamic elements growing steadily as we turn the corner. Some nice lingering sourness, slick twangy lactic acidity hang on and do some work. Earthy, dry, a touch of blackberry comes at times. This one was quite the surprise. Light and quite quaffable, but not fading off like a lot of small sours. A session worthy sour that does some nice work, a sufficient sourness, mellow body and nice stone and dark fruit berry jabs at times. Tasty.

McCoys West Coast IPA
Draft on tap at the Public House (Kansas City, KS). Pours a gently hazed amber orange hue, a gentle haziness compliments a fuller amber orange glow. Some decent glow, a touch dulled with cakey whitish head atop. A nice layer atop sits as a decent cap, nice enough lacing through out. Aromas are a bit spritzy and citric, gentle tropical fruit, florals and earth. A bit bready, cereal elements and a touch of sweeter biscuit. Initial is lighter end of the fold in body, a touch of girth with some firmer floral bitterness attacking the palate. Jabs of earth, some lemon and a bit of pithy sharpness. Touches of bread, biscuit and a gentle dab of caramel into the middle. This one never gets too sweet, allowing the hops to do the work. Firmly bitter, a bit spritzy with some driving floral elements, a bit of earth and gentle citrus splashes into the backend. A touch more caramel and earth, sweetness kicks a bit back here but the hops do their job and fight it off well enough. Solid, the hop character is potent but seems to lack a bit of life. Earthy, a bit carmelized and sweet into the backend but not distracting. Ok.

McCoys Wee Willy Scotch Ale
This is a nice Scotch style ale. No major hop influence but wee heavy and quite sweet. It is not overly heavy or sweet. It is one of the better efforts I’ve tasted of this style . I’ve tasted the original American attempt that putatively kicked off the Micro brew movement in N. America. I’ve lived in Washington and have frequented Yakima, where most of our hops are grown in the states. Bert Grant’s pub is acclaimed to be ground zero in America’s micro brewing revival. That said, it’s been too many years ( at least 15 ) since I’ve been there for a pint of Scotch Ale delivered via beer engine hand pump. Some breweries I really respect (Oscar Blues, etc.) produce a product that borders on syrup and leaves me gasping for water to chase it down. This scotch ale is very nice and was the favorite of 4 brews I drank and sampled. Don’t miss the chocolate stout either. This brewery is quite nice. The ambiance is really great, especially as I watch the KC Royals run the points up against San Francisco in game 3 of the World Series. Some of the beers I tasted here could use a little help, but I like this one in particular.

McCoys Newcombs IPA
There is nothing wrong w this brew. Well, not in any major sense. An average IPA beats most other styles any day of the week. I think it tasted OK but I was ready to move on after finishing one pint. The overall malt flavor, hop nose and aftertaste were on the lower end of good, for my preferences. As an honest man and home brewer, I should be a little more forgiving. My wife, friends and family have graciously drained bottles and kegs of strange brews I’ve concocted at home. And I’m a firm believer that there is a beer for every palate and that I’m not the only Judge. Opinions are like certain body parts, and mine is but one opinion. That said, flavors and smells can conjure up memories from our past: both pleasant and otherwise. I was born behind the cheddar curtain. And Milwaukee,WI is the home of many less than average beers. PBR is a brand I would gladly display over my bar in my basement, but not because it satisfies my palate. I just love Wisconsin and the PBR beer signs haning outside every tavern in the great North Woods. I’ve been convinced a number of times to try and retry PBR, but to no avail. There is a strong foul flavor in that grog that builds to a resounding crescendo, as I’ve strived to finish every PBR I’ve started. I want to like it for nostalgic purposes, but can’t get past the flavor. In a small way, this grog made me think of PBR. There is a certain "off" flavor, that I cannot overcome by will or decision. Something has spoiled the potion. There is a fly in that ointment. I think I mentioned that I’m a home brewer. That doesn’t make ME the expert. Casting stones is not my intention. This IPA just does not satisfy my IPA longings. It does not finish with that malty sweet, aromatic malt/hop bouquet. It could be the hop choice itself that imparts the off flavor that resurrected my memories of past beers gone bad. I can’t determine whether to place judgement on the hop, the malt or the process that produces the unsatisfactory olfactory response for me. I’ve never produced a brew that reminds me of this. Neither could the guy next to me at the bar, as we watched game 3 of the 2014 World Series in KC. He and I both agreed that this brew is not yet where it needs to be to compete w a Rocky Mountain or West Coast micro craft brew. That said, I apologize for my comparison to PBR. This brew is very different and far superior. But the flavor & aftertaste did conjure up some haunting memories that I would rather have kept suppressed.

McCoys MO Sour Bruin
~12 oz tulip draft at The Foundry in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is cloudy brown ruby with a smallish light head. The aroma is tart, softly sour black cherry and some grass herbal. The taste is the nose, nice bright cherry tart funk up front, herbal lemon citrus, lingering gentle sour in the finish. The palate is light bodied, active natural carbonation and a the clean sour finish. Despite low ABV, had nice body. Tasty beer.

McCoys Cherry Stout
On cask at the brewpub. Fruity, lightly roasty/toasty aroma, some hints of tart cherry, dark brown sugar and faint coffee. Deep, dark brown in color, with a spare, fine-bubbled head (this is on cask, so that’s par for the course). Flavor profile is roasty, gently sweet and fruity, more cherry to be found here, with milky chocolate, molasses, very light coffee and cream, almost seems like there is a touch of lactose here, finishing roasty and showing more cherry character late. Typically smooth and low in effervescence for a stout dispensed from cask, body is light-medium. Very light in feel, cherry is far from being overbearing here. Not bad!

McCoys Lunch Pale Ale
On draft at the brewpub. Aroma of toasty, mildly grainy malt and fruity, citric hop, with faint notes of caramel, orange and grapefruit, some floral hop touches and pine in the background as well. Hazy light amber in color with a fine, subsiding head. Flavor profile is nicely balanced, with toasty, malty, light caramel sweetness, light pine and fresh citrus, some hop spice and flowers, and a light-moderate degree of bitterness. Lightly effervescent and smooth on the palate, body is light-medum. Very drinkable session APA, pleasant and refreshing.

I had a couple of ~2 oz samples at the Boulevardia Taps & Tastes in Kansas City, Missouri. The pour is a mostly clear golden yellow, along with a minimal white. The aroma is wheat grain, light coriander citrus spice, and salt. The taste is straight-forward, the wheat features at the start and the salt carries the finish. The palate is light medium bodied, dry salt finish. Simple, though well made and quite tasty. A 2 oz pour didn’t do this justice.

OK but left me wanting. The aroma was citrus and clove. The color a hazy lemony yellow. The palate was a little light. Flavors were banana, clove , wheat and a little citrus. Some yeastiness as well. Pretty standard stuff. At least it’s better than their unfiltered wheat. They have better beers than this.

For a simple lager it was quite pleasing. In fact, the guy next to me at the table only drinks PBR and he liked it enough to order one. Clean grainy notes. Bright golden color. Crisp clean and light palate with a lot of carbonation as one might expect. Simple tastes of pale malts and lager yeast. There was a slight hop bite at the end. Easy to eat with a burger.

McCoys Ginger Shandy
I actually enjoyed this. One has to remember that this is a Shandy and not an overly complex beer. The aroma was of strong ginger. The color was like, well, Ginger Ale. The mouth feel was highly carbonated and crisp. Ginger is the flavor that hits you first followed by sweetness with a little spice. This borders the line of a wine cooler but can still be classified as a beer. Refreshing.
