Bottle (bb 27.01.2018, L400272). Pours red brownish with white lacing. Light tart raspberries, malts, light wood, light cherry. Taste is light sweet, moderate tart, raspberries, cherries. Expected more tartness and funk. Not bad though.

Brought back from Ronse, Flanders. Couleur orangée trouble, forte mousse. Nez complexe et fort, brett, fruits verts, avec notes brulées et orange. Gout assez sec, fruits verts, brett, agrumes citron, note lévurée avec forte amertume houblon cru et aigreur assez typique, manque juste un peu de subtilité, trop sur la levure champegnoise comme dit sur etiquette.

Bottle 75cl kindly brought from Vlanderen by Calisky. A cloudy copper beer with medium head. Nose is on sour notes, green herb, barnyard, typical lambic notes but seems not dry, let see. Aroma is on green lemon, brett, moist, medium sour, dry, alcohol well hidden, more alcohol than usual lambic, some sauvignon blanc notes. Good one, not too dry.

75cl bottle @ Whale Night, Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours pale gold, white bubbly head. Aroma is funk, hay, marginal horseblanket. Taste is spritzy, of course, with delicate lambic flavours. Fresh and crisp, the bubbles teasing every ounce of gueuze flavour from the glass. Very good.

750mL bottle, pours a cloudy opaque orange with lots of yeasty bits and a medium white head. Aroma brings out Belgian yeast, oak barrels and cardboard. Flavour is quite complex, with lots of red wine and oak upfront, followed by Belgian yeast and just s touch of candied sugar. Complex and well-structured but perhaps not quite the elite beer it is rated to be. Very good.

Multiple quenching bag-in-a-minibox pours after an uphill bike ride to NachtvdGroteDorst, Itterbeek 2016-IV - Bref: introduces sherry, grape, nut and cork notes to a "malse" easy lambiek rich enough to sustain multiple interested sips. - Flat and oily beigeyellow pour. Citric sulphurs in aroma dampened by that round & sweet wheat jam. Somewhere between the old hop bitters and fruity lemon lies a metallic note that must be those walnut hulls, leaving on an earthy cork note, grape skins and wood tannins. Gentle, probably overpriced stab at bottled exclusivity - gladly sampled on democratic cardboard bag tap.

Full draught pintlets@NachtvdGroteDorst and ZBF 2016-IV. Bref: mild lambiek lemon lays on top, instead of cuts through, a cheapish sugary tripel. - The lemony funk lays on this banana-forward Huyghe tripel like a candied lemon rind on a banana and peach milkshake - sounds good, but the execution is the supermarket accessible version of that idea: cheap refined sugars battled by the round, pleasant lambiek by Oud Beersel, oily mouthfeel, little lore. - Curious what this will do in the bottle, as for now there is little vibrant going on to entice multiple samplings. (Cf. for + example: Vicaris Tripel Geuze...the brett palpaply nibbling at the tripel esters..) Marketing and label: the pious nun Duchesse de Bourgogne goes red lipstick bombshell? Let’s hope this tacky 80s marketing is a passing Huyghe-machismo-induced fad...

Clear blond beer, aery off-white head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: distinctive lambic smell, bit metallic, funky, fruity, sourish notes. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: pretty fruity, peaches, bit sourish, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: citrus, bit grassy, fruity notes, soft bitterness, bit of banana.

Sample @ Zythos’16, courtesy of and shared with the RB Belgian crew. dorée, col fin blanc. Arôme au nez fermenté très belge de triple Bersalis avec un léger rétro raisin blanc/brett lambic, et fin boisé. Palais n’est pas spécialement convaincant, le tout semble être plus un mixe d’un brassin étant parti sur le ’sour’. Retrouve ce côté banane ester avec un léger fini amer houblonné. Le lambic est moyen ajoutant plus cette note fraîche en fin de bouche et de cuire/boisé accompagné d’un léger citronné.

Bottle consumed in April 2016 at home. AROMA: Phenolic. Quite clean. Not really picking up much oak. APPEARANCE: Blonde. Turbid. Medium clean white head. TASTE: Quite complex array of flavours. Typical Tripel like flavours of straw and dried lighter fruits present. Nice.I was hoping to pick up more of the red wine but alas not on that occasion. PALATE: Fairly sour complex notes, long finish, retro -nasal build-up of phenolic notes a la band aid and paint thinners. Medium body and carbonation. OVERALL: Glad to have tried it. Not expecting it to be quite so phenolic. Very interesting beer all the same. I wonder what age would do to this beer?

Sampled @ ZBF 2016. (Thank you for sharing RB people!) Pale clear citrus (not sure as to why this combo is clear all of the sudden), little white head. Nose is like this weird dank plastic oily lemon, sweet grains & medicine. Taste is off-putting medicinal hospital funk, plastic, oily melon, soft carbonation, phenolic, weird oily. This realy strange medicinal hospital funk really doesn’t do it for, me off-putting. I suppose given how easy it is for Huyghe to make more tripel for this guys, this is a great way to increase their production of sour beer – the tripel combo can be nice que Vicaris, bit too strange que Tuverbol or wonderful see Reuss but this one is a total pass after Oud Beersel’s recent (expensive efforts). This one is a nope for me. Maybe start with stopping by commissioning a beer at Huyghe?
