Brouwerij Oud Beersel Reviews

Oud Beersel Bersalis Kadet 2.1
Bottle. Bought without realising it was from the dead hand of Huyghe. Nose is yeast, honey, peach, melon, straw. Very appealing. Taste is overbearingly metallic, dry, yeast, hint of lemon, touch of melon coming through, slight straw, bitter slightly sour metallic finish. Good quality, lower strength beers, are hard to do and a delight when correct. This is a mess, the metallic note dominates leaving little left to savor, i hoped I have a bad bottle, but I suspect not.

Oud Beersel Oude Kriek 4.3
2012 bottle of Oud Beersel Kriek - made for export I guess. Beautiful dark brownish red with lively fluffy bright white head. Sweet aroma of cherries and cherry pits. Taste dry and earthy, whole-mouth tart (as opposed to sharp prickly tartness). I could drink this all day.

Oud Beersel Kriek 3.5
Definitely cared for the Oude version more than this, though it’s been a long while since I had that one. This is perhaps fruitier, but one note, and a little musty like the tripel. Hints of cheese. Still enjoyable, but not for the coin.

Oud Beersel Bersalis Tripel 2.9
Big head and carbonation in this one. Fruity and yeasty, with a bit of sharpness to it, and a little more musty/dusty than I care for. One timer.

Oud Beersel Framboise 2.7
Bottle, 37.5cL. Home. A sparkling red garnett beer with a medium pinkish head ; medium retention. Red berries (raspberry), sugar, acid, woody note. Medium sweet, round, light to medium acid dry refreshing. Light body, thin syrupy sticky texture, average to soft carbonation, candy red berry finish. Overall, sweet, red berries, nearly candies like ; average ; disappointed, I expected much more.

Ottima kriek, non do il massimo perché ce ne sono di migliori ma ha un ottimo rapporto qualità/prezzo.

Oud Beersel Bersalis Tripel 3.2
Bottle from Boise Co-op. Nice pour, with huge fluffy head, cloudy golden body. Earthy, musty aroma, bready, medium weight. Taste is more of the same aroma characteristics, mild spicy bite. Not one of the best Belgian tripels, but body is right on, a flaw I’ve found with a lot of American tripels.

Corked 2011 bottle. Golden color, pours a huge head. Citrus, soft vinous notes, hints of oak. Shy aroma for a geuze. Vinous, soft sour flavor. Citrus, bitter amnonds, oak, red fruit sweeties. Carbonation is soft. Complex enough, but not a great geuze.

Oud Beersel Framboise 3.5
First up is the Oud Beersel Framboise which pours a dark blood red with a fuzzy pink foam that fizzled out fast. It’s got a big bright aroma like a basket of fresh ripe raspberries and a pleasing tartness. Raspy carbonation on a medium-light body. Whew is this tart! Oaky, tart raspberries including the seeds, extremely fruity but finishes dry. It’s like a flavor explosion that quickly disappears but primes you to want another sip. Damn fine stuff though pretty straight-forward as far as lambics go.

Oud Beersel Oude Geuze 3.5

Oud Beersel Oude Geuze 4.7
Ottima gueuze, non do il massimo perché ce ne sono di migliori ma ha un ottimo rapporto qualità/prezzo.

Oud Beersel Green Walnut 3.9
Pours a darker than usual golden with a slight-could-have-said-no white head that leaves no lacing. Nose carries a nice sherry-like perfume, blue cheese funk and wood. Earth, nuts, dried leaves. Taste is lightly tart and carries more xerez-like flavors. A light sweetness. Something that could pass as acetone in higher concentrations but no. No real nutty flavors but I guess it’s all part of the sherry theme anyway. Body is medium and carbonation moderately high and a bit stingy. A nice, lightly tannic mouthfeel. Quite nice, glad I could get a taste of that!

Slightly hazy amber. Medium to large head, medium retention. Aroma intensity 4/5. Metal and flowers in the nose. Significant bitter and sour. Carbonation is too fizzy, gives it a weird structure. Sort of light body. Not the best geuze, still a geuze

Oud Beersel Green Walnut 3.7
Bottle (750 ml). Slightly hazy golden with a small quickly recessing white head leaving little to no lacing. Aroma is funkier than the usual soft and mineral Oud Beersel but still pretty nice, featuring an interesting nutty presence as well as herbal notes, hints of pickles and oaky features. Taste moderately acidic though again a bit more than your usual Oud Beersel lambic and it also feel quite a bit heavier. The funk is definitely there and pretty nice, the nutty aspect is among the dominants flavors as well and they are completed by oaky features, mild spiciness and floral notes. Body is medium, but leaning toward full for a lambic. Medium carbonation. Nutty and funky finish. It’s good and I enjoyed it, but at this point it fails to bring out the delicate and mineral refinement that there’s in both Oud Beersel Oude Gueuze and Oude Kriek. It’s alreasy somewhat acidic so I’m curious about how it will evolve with a year or two on it. Good.

Oud Beersel Framboise 4
This bottle is likely from around 2007 or older. Poured into a Leffe chalice pours amber with no head or lace. Aroma of sweet and tart raspberries. Low carbonation and big mouthfeel. Flavors of sweet and tart raspberries, sweet cherries, slight oak, slight malts, liquid sweet tart. I should say I’ve been drinking this brew since I represented them in 2008 and they are generally lovely with or without food. I’m not sure over 5 years of age helps in any way, but it still has the flavor backbone, just less carbonatin and brightness. Overall a tasty framboise.
