3.3 Harpers Greasy Beaver Brown Reviewed from notes. The appearance was as mostly dark brown color with a light tan foamy head that slid off into some light messy lace. The aroma had some grassy and bitter piney hops over top of some driftwood, nuts and damp cocoa powder. Light minty ending. The flavor leaned upon the sweetness at first on the driftwood, nuts and cocoa powder. That minty-ness came back fresh and sweet and ended up blending decently into the aftertaste. Finish absorbed the mint, driftwood and cocoa powder. The feel was about medium bodied with a fair sessionability about it. Decent carbonation and the ABV felt good. Not really smooth, but not rough, just felt like a regular brown ale for the most part. Overall, aromas and flavors were quite different than what I’m used to for the style. I almost think it was some sort of homebrew that may have been bought by Harpers just to do something different. I think I’d still have this again. Monday, May 8, 2017

3.6 Harpers American Brown Ale Reviewed from notes. The appearance was fairly dark brown color with a finger’s worth of tan foamy head. Fell off at a decent pace. Mild lace. The aroma had some dark fruits, roasted malts, some nuts, good caramel/toffee base malt and then some milk chocolate. Earthy to resinous hops started coming out as it warmed. The flavor maintained a good malt base sweetness through the previously mentioned items. The hops do a decent effort of blending but end up also escaping a bit. Light smoke entered in just before the aftertaste which also had some of that along with the dark fruits. Finish was balanced through the malts, dark fruits and smoke. The feel was about medium bodied with a decent sessionability about it. Mild carbonation with a good ABV. Overall, pretty good brown ale I could see myself having again if I was still in Michigan. 3 Harpers Chocolate Mint Stout The appearance was a deep brown color with a slight transparency about it but even that was extremely faint. Just a film of a little white frothy head that just slid into oblivion, no lace. The aroma had some chocolate and roasted malts up front with some gripping piney/resiny bitterness embracing the backbone. Some caramel/toffee malts slip in there for a light balance. The flavor leaned towards the sweet side through the previously mentioned aromas. This blended into the aftertaste and rode into the finish. The feel was about medium bodied with a good sipping quality about it. Hops seemed to create a bit more harshness in this department, somewhat acceptable to me. Overall, so where was the "mint?" I read and heard "mint." This never delivered on that. Saturday, April 29, 2017

2.4 Harpers Belgian Wit An ok beer. By far my favorite from Harper’s. Is overall pretty light in flavor; has some spices and floral notes but mostly citrus flavors. Monday, April 14, 2014

2.9 Harpers Milk Stout On the board as Lake Effect Stout. This a really sweet stout. The pour is a lighter dark brown, no real head, and no lacing to speak of. The smell is really sweet, with some hints of chocolate, and maybe a little coffee. The taste is even sweeter, with some of the coffee and chocolate coming in as an afterthought. Not very well executed, and it doesn't linger very well. Not a good beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone Friday, October 4, 2013

2.9 Harpers Maibock Draft at pub. I can’t figure out why I liked this, but I did. It was served with no head; looked thin and watery. It didn’t taste like the (few) Dortmunder/Helles I have tried; caramel with a bit of fruity sweetness. Monday, August 20, 2012

1.8 Harpers Ale Draft at pub. Harper’s rendition of an English pale ale, but not one I like. I guess that since it is classed as a "mild ale" maybe it is what the style is supposed to be. This beer had little hop or malt flavor. Monday, August 20, 2012

2.5 Harpers Grove Street Pale Ale Draft at pub. Amber with no head. Smooth, light on the palate. I can’t say anything bad about it, but it had nothing to distinguish it. Monday, August 20, 2012

1 Harpers Maibock amber with small head. i couldn’t even finish my small sample glass. this was definitely not my thing. sweet -- perhaps a mix of caramel and rotting vegetables. slight hops. Monday, June 11, 2012

3 Harpers Milk Stout Listed on the menu as Colette’s Stout and described as a sweet stout. however, it seems extremely dry to me with substantial chocolate malts -- no sweetness at all. decent, but not exactly what was described by the menu. Monday, June 11, 2012

2.3 Harpers Spartan Wheat Spartan Wheat is a very drinkable wheat beer and probably the best beer of the four mainstays at Harper’s Brewpub. It pours a rich orange color, usually cloudy and is pretty smooth. You gotta figure this is a college town so the ability to chug a beer is a big factor in every beer they make. But in general this beer will remind you of an oberon or rich wheat not very Hefe at all....a great summer ale. Monday, November 9, 2009

2.9 Harpers Velvet Rim Porter On tap at the brewpub. Slightly cloudy dark brown with small beige head. Aroma is chocolate and cherry with coffee and roast, sweeter. Flavor is interesting, it almost tastes like a not so hot bourbon with the light alc, cherry, sweeter malt, syrupy roast. Medium to light body with light carbonation. Tasty but strange, not a porter but what is it? A bourbon aged brown? Sunday, July 26, 2009

1.5 Harpers Ale On tap at the brewpub. Clear pale straw color that is almost water looking with a splash of lemon/lime juice in it and small white head. Aroma is all corn and adjunct with graininess. Flavor is grainy with soft sweetness, lagerish...maybe. Light, watery body, active carbonation. Really bad. Sunday, July 26, 2009

2.8 Harpers Jolly Good Roger On tap at the brewpub. Slightly cloudy but clear amber with small fizzy white head. Arom ais straight up simcoe and cascade with that standard cat pee smell but still quite pleasant, dryer caramel with a little earthiness. Sweeter caramel flavor, earthy and spicy hops with citrus and grapefruit, dirty. Medium and light carbonation. The best so far, nicely hoppy and refreshing but it tends toward the English style. Sunday, July 26, 2009

2.4 Harpers Grove Street Pale Ale On tap at the brewery. Clear light amber with small white head. ARoma is light and grainy with some earthy hops, dry, smells a little like a bitter. Tastes somewhat like one too with noble hops, chalk, medium bitterness, dry carame, meh. Light, watery body and light, active carbonation. A little off, but I could see this possibly being an english style pale ale. Sunday, July 26, 2009

1.5 Harpers Raspberry Wheat On tap t the BP milky grapefruit juice color with small, white, fizzy head. Raspberry syrup aroma, grainy. Flavor is sweet and syrupy with grain, some grapefruit and citrus flavors. Medium to light watery body with light carbontion. Super sweet and fake tasting, this is everything I dislike about fruit beers. Thursday, July 23, 2009

1.7 Harpers Spartan Wheat On tap at the brewpub. Cloudy, light yellow straw color with small white head. Semi sweet wheat aroma with an interesting fruit aroma as it warmed. Sweet grain with citrus and lemon peel. Medium to light body, watery with light carbonation. Grainy and sweet. Thursday, July 23, 2009

2.9 Harpers Raspberry Wheat Was on tap half off night. Smelled like perfume and tasted like it as well, artificial tasting. Also tastes sweet, with no hints of beer flavor. Aftertaste was wierd not that good. Maybe an OK beer for some. Thursday, January 10, 2008

1.9 Harpers Raspberry Wheat My impression is that this is what non-beer drinkers drink on half-off night at Harpers. Raspberry dominates the flavor in a way that makes the beer unenjoyable. I appreciate amazing beers, but still enjoy drinking lower quality beer. I can’t drink this one though. I’d rather drink 5 Busch Lights for the price of one Harper’s Raspberry Wheat.
