Draft @ Porgu.

Tap at Põrgu. Sweet, wet hay aroma. Tastes similarily, plus sourish. Rather prickly carbonation, dry on the palate. OK at best.

Enjoyed a sample of this beer from a trumpet glass on tap at Porgu in Tallinn, Estonia. The beer had a darker gold color with a slightly amber hue and a foamy white head that was good-sized with average retention, cling, and lacing. The aroma featured floral and earthy hops with some lively straw and yeast notes. The taste was a sour-bitter blend with grainy and floral notes and a bit of straw. The beer was mostly wet and watery with low carbonation and an average thick mouthfeel.

Tap at Drink Baar, Tallinn. Clear amber shade with a ring of head. Light gingery spice in the aroma. Taste is caramelly, malty, bready. There’s a dryness to it that helps drinkability. Body is notably robust even for the strength. Compares favourably to the Ayinger Oktoberfest I just had.

Liters at various pubs around Estonia. When it fresh - it is good and refreshing version of amber lager. Body varies heavily form medium thick to nonexistent. Hop palet is irregular, and malt is rather different from batch to batch. Still it is different and this worth a try. Ask barman for a sample - then get your pint.

Tap at Põrgu in Tallinn (€ 2,50 for 33 cl), August 2014. Clear dark amber / light mahagony, off-white small head - no lacing, doesn’t stay for long. Looks great against candlelight. Nose is candy-like, almost artificial caramel, killing off everything else; gets more malty later, something ashy too. Taste is caramelly, malty-grainy, with a very slight metallic aftertaste, and a modest spicy tingle. Light to medium body, mild carbonation; sticky, even syrupy palate. A slightly bitter, grainy and sugary, dry finish. Would not believe it to be 6,2 % ABV. Quite tasty.

From tap to PET bottle in Elav Õlu. Bottle label has 5,7%. Dark brown body, medium to small head. Aroma has medium roast with some nuttiness. Good thick mouthfeel. Taste has medium roast with something salty. Not dry and ashy like most of the Schwarzbiers I know are. With its fruity, nutty and sweetish finish it’s actually closer to a Dunkel. Simple and drinkable but doesn’t offer anything special.

A nice dark beer, one of Estonia’s finest I’ve had so far. The head is a nice brownish color, although it dissapates fast. The smell is a full blowout of caramel, malt, molasses and some notes of alcohol later on. The color is ruby red with backlight, black otherwise, which is just perfect for this type of beer. The taste - take some sweet malts, add a bunch of molasses and some caramel, then mix with an aftertaste of chocolate and a hint of fruity undernote. Overall, a very nice bready feel to it, would love some Maasdam or Lacey cheese to go with it. The full taste, and sweet aroma compliment each other and make this a moment in live one should truly enjoy.

Served in snifter, wtf?
Aroma is odd with honey, apricot, grain and gluey notes. Flavour has metal, apricot, chlorine, grain and honey. Not the most typical Helles and too much metal here.

50cl on tap at Krunk, Sillamäe. Clear golden with a white head. Malty aroma with fruits, honey and some floral notes. Hints of caramel too. Fairly sweet with a light almost citrusy bitterness in the finish. Medium body with a slightly soft carbonation. Quite nice, far better than the usual pale lagers here.

Aroma is sweet and odd with berries, vanilla and caramel. Flavour has caramel, some raspberries and malty feeling in the finish. Not your typical Münchener and actually feels more like an ale. But somehow I like the berry notes here.

In short: An amateurish amber beer with a few off flavors. Problematic
How: A few hand-bottles shared by FatPhil, filled directly in Estonia a consumed a few days later in lost village of Lithuania
The look: Almost clear amber body topped by a very small off-white head
In long: Nose is semi-toasted earthy hay and a tiny bit horsey. Taste is basic toasted cereals, a bit of caramel, a bit of honey, a weird wet leather sensation, a light fruity sourness. This felt very amateurish. Not good. At least I think this is what my drunken notes are saying, so now go wash you eyes cause I just pulled that rating out of my ass

(Rating #4227)

My Bottom Line:
Toasted and caramelized cereals roam within this lager’s lean body, leading to an ever-so-slightly acidic, fruity finish.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy head of foam sits atop the hazy amber.
-The soft effervescence and slender sugars make for high drinkability.
-The light fruitiness in the finish is awkward.
-This was not really memorable, nor was it too well executed, imho.

Bottle. Thx for the opportunity, Phil and Anna!

Draught at Hell Hunt, Tallinn. Red amber with a fine white lid. Beeswax aroma. Sweet, caramel and corn-accented with a slight edge of acidity and maybe oak. Barrels and caramel; tang of iron. Reminds me of Rodenbach. Digestives and cream afters. Can’t detect any alcohol. Decent drop.

Fairly rich sweet caramelly aroma, and pretty roasty too. Some dry dustiness too, quite dense and heady. Deep brown, healthy tan head that takes a long time to settle to just a ring. More a dunkel than a schwartz in look. Crisp carbonation, smooth sweet body. Lovely smooth sweet roasty taste - caramelly. Hops very gently, but pleasant. Finish pleasantly hoppy, very fresh buddy hops. Full and fresh - good one Sillamae - make this more often!
Rerate: Tap-to-Bottle (Elav 6lu, Maardu) (6:4:7:4:14=3.5)
Not quite so expressive an aroma, some nice caramel, something a little stale. However, it’s lovely in the mouth, a real rich roast, some burnt toasty corners. Maybe to "light" - it’s super quaffable and easily sessionable, not saying it’s 5.8 at all. Good stuff, no doubt.

I assume this is the one I’ve had draught at Dr!nk, Tallinn. Slighlty darker copper colour, small white head. Nice sweet yoghurty, grainy malty nose. Yoghurty grainy smooth soft taste, very light acidity, some sweetness, light bitter hoppy aftertaste. Nice enough and certainly a great change of pace after all those crappy Estonian macros and the Beer House varieties on the same theme.
