Lurgashall Reserve / Special Reserve Mead
Bottle, 2009 vintage, shared at game night with Parksy, phantomhennes, and heavylaevy. Golden body with medium viscosity, still. Sweet aroma of honey, light pineapple, light vanilla, floral undertones. Sweet floral honey balanced by a nice fruity acidity, pineapple coming in again, oaky vanilla in the finish. This ends with a light tartness, which greatly adds to the drinkability for me. I expected a cloying honeyed oak mess, but I’m happy to be completely wrong! This turned out to be a huge surprise hit!

This was not my cup of tea, poured a dark yellow with aromas of dry honey, and some wood, with a touch of spice. Flavors were the same, not the best one out there.

Lurgashall Spiced / Metheglin Mead
Rated on 3-05-2010 at Fort Wayne, IN Gathering. This Mead, courtesy of hotstuff and thedm, has an appearance of a yellow transparent body. The aroma is honey, sweet and spicy. The taste is honey, some spice, sweet, and has a dry finish. The palate is very smooth and this Mead is medium bodied. Overall, this Mead is very easy to drink even with a 13% ABV. It is worth trying and a Mead I would drink again.

Bottle at Chris O’s pre-GBBF shindig, 2013. Light green pour with a white head. Honey and baked apple aroma. Heavy sweet spice action in the flavour- cloves, cinnamon- accentuates the dominant honey taste. Not bad.

Bottle from Brusin’ ales - pours clear gold, still. I had this one a couple days ago and drank the whole bottle in one sitting which I normally don’t do. That said its solid, but a bit boring.

Bottle at the ChrisO Holiday Tasting, London - thanks to Mes and Sim. Pours clear yellow tint with a few bubbles. Sweet honey aroma, hints of spices and herbs. Big sweet flavor, plenty of sticky honey, light spiciness. Full bodied with fine, flat carbonation. Moderately warming finish, medium sweet, not as thick as some meads I’ve had. Nice dry honey character in the end.

Lurgashall English / Celtic / Christmas Mead
A nice, smooth, simple and easy drinking mead. It has a lot of sweetness, but it’s not an overly rich or syrupy sweetness. Body is still thicker than wine, but it reminis bright and crisp. The spices are a good idea, but they leave a lot of sediment that takes away from the drinking experience. I should have used a little stocking for steeping.

Vintage 2009, pours a golden color with decent legs in the glass, aroma is quite sharp with honey and oak notes, smells pungent. Flavor is sharp as well, almost cloying but not quite, honey dominates and there are subtle oak hints, not sure why it has such weak rating on here, its not bad.

A slick and oily viscous fluid, looks like it will be sticky. Honey alcohol and molasses dominate the aroma, but there’s a sharpness too. Sharpness comes out more in the mouth, and in fact dominates. It’s aided by the bite of 17% alcohol. Too sharp for me. for 17% meads, give me the mjod style instead.

700ml bottle (ChrisO’s post-GBBF2011 Tuesday)
Sweet honey, gentle spice. Little to say, it is what it is..... I think my issue with this is the fact that it’s a UK wine-styled mead. It doesn’t have the heft of a polish mjod, it’s paler, thinner, and simpler at its base. The spices seem to be there as if they’re just covering up something, or the lack of something, and aren’t well integrated. Not unpleasant, but not my style of mead.

Very pale straw colour. Bit of a white wine feel. Of course, it is quite sweet but, like the Lurgashall Reserve Mead I tried immediately before this was relatively light and not too sticky for a mead. Decent enough, even though I’m not a big fan of meads, or at least the levels of sweetness that many have.

Sample at the mead tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 7/29/10. Clear light yellow in color. Aroma was very unpleasant, but I kept going back for more to see if it changed. Didn’t want to jump the gun on thnking it smelled so bad, but it smelled the same every time I took a whiff. The best way to describe the aroma is urinal cake or recently cleaned public restroom. Just wasn’t my thing. The flavor was decent though. Honey with a bit of tart citrus and what I thought was a hint of mint. The urinal cake character wasn’t evident in the flavor.

This corked and caged bottled mead from a bottle shop poured a small sized head of medium sized clear colored bubbles that were quickly diminishing and left behind a transparent yellow orange colored body and a oily lacing. The aroma was musty and honey. . The strong flavor contained notes of vinous sweet mild spice and honey. Delicious and one I would certainly like to have again.
