Mandalay Lager
A pale blonde lager with a thick collapsing lacing white head. In aroma, light Rice adjunct malt with light grassy German hops, light mineral notes, so-so. In mouth, a refreshing lager with light overtones of nail polish remover.. This must be bad when it warms up. Bottle at CIP lounge at MDL.

Mandalay Lager
Yellow beer with big bubbles. Minimal head. Smells grainy, maybe some sour apple. Medium body...for the world’s most feeble-bodied beer style. Grainy taste with low bitterness, but more than Myanmar Beer thank god.

Pours thanks to Grumbo. Country tick #119 - Pours gold white head - nose and taste of apple, sweet grain, marzipan, grass and vegetal notes - lighter medium body. Really wish this brewery was called Vandalay so it had two Seinfeld references.

660ml bottle in Bagan, Myanmar. Pours a a pale copper gold with minimal white head. Aroma: Malt, grain, corn notes. Taste: Malts dominate the flavour balance. Mild corn, earthy flavours. Mild sweetness. Moderate bitterness. Not particularly hoppy. Watery texture. Light bodied. High carbonation. A decent beer (better than most other beers available in Myanmar).

Mandalay Lager
660ml bottle in Bagan, Myanmar. Pours a clear amber gold with a thin white head. Aroma: Caramel malt and earthy aroma. Taste: Malts dominate. Mild caramel/brown sugar flavour from the malts. Mild corn/corn syrup flavour. Mild sweetness. Mildly bitter. Moderate carbonation. Not overly flavoursome, but pretty easy drinking. Probably was my favourite of the beers available in Myanmar.

Mandalay Lager
Straight from the bottle. Typical sweetness with low hops, some corniness. You’d think there’d be a taste for bitter beers here as there’s more bitterness in the food than most cuisines... probably some law on beer bitterness to protect a general’s business interests. I do prefer this over Myanmar beer.

Mandalay Strong Ale
Tasted 31/12/2016. Bottle in Mandalay. Poured a crystal clear golden amber with a one-finger bright white foamy head that diminished slowly to a very thin collar that laced OK. Carbonation moderate, slow and fine to medium. Aroma of slightly sweet malt which is slightly sweeter than other Myanmar lagers; no obvious hops. Taste of slightly sweet malt that is slightly stronger than other Myanmar lagers; no real bitterness. Light body. Crisp and smooth with a short, sweet finish.

Spirulina Beer Anti-Aging Drink
Abgesehen vom in Lizenz gebrauten ABC Stout. 8/9/9/8//9

I used to drink this during the several weeks I spent in Yangon (Rangoon). It’s not any better than the pilseners, but since it is stronger, you have to drink less to get a buzz. Actually, it has more flavor than the lighter brews, but is it a pleasant flavor? Not really.

Mandalay Lager
I’m a touring bicyclist and inveterate beer drinker, so wherever I travel, I will drink the local brews. Occasionally, I’ll be more than happy to do so, but on the other hand it is a bit of a chore to get a few down and renew my energy after a hot sweaty day in the tropics. Mandalay proved to be such a chore. I mean, these SEAsian countries don’t grow barley OR hops, and they are often poor countries to boot... so how to produce beer from other agricultural products at a price impoverished peasants can afford? You get the idea, crap in, crap out, thus Mandalay lager.

Mandalay Strong Ale
Bottle. 7.0%. No ’best before’ date, but a few years old at least. Pours a straw yellow with a small white head. Aroma is cereals and a bit metallic. Hint of wet dog as it warms. Flavour is cereals with a light smoked note and a hint of milk. Feels a bit fat. Finish is a bit tart, with a light grainy and an alcohol note. Too much carbonation. Overall, it tastes old, but still sort of decent considering the age, even if not particularly good; I’ve had much worse. 28.02.15.

Spirulina Beer Anti-Aging Drink
I searched every nook & cranny in Mandalay to try to find a bottle of this somewhat "iconic" beer. Everyone in Burma knows the product, but they cannot find the damn thing. There is also a perception that it is a "weaker" beer. Apparently the manufacturers have stopped making it. Nevertheless, after much driving around the wonderful roads of Mandalay, we found a place at the corner 80th street and maybe 20th or 21st, on the west side of the palace, where they claimed to have it on tap. It is a Mandalay Beer joint, but they had an empty, un-named tap. I was kindly asked to wait and they brought a new keg in. The beer looked like a great pale lager and, frightfully cold, it did tast like a delightfully fresh pale lager. There was that touch of Saaz hoppiness on a mainly malty lager. I have never swam with the paddlefish, so I have no idea what spirulina tastes like. It could be a hoax and maybe I was served regular Mandalay beer, but except for the ABC stout, this was the best beer I had in Burma. A hesitant tick. I invite any visitors to Mandalay to check on this one.

Mandalay Strong Ale
Bottle from a roadside vendor in Ngapali. The red label, saying only "Strong Beer". At 6.5%, it has no mention of the word "ale". Either it should be a different entry or I’ll be surprised anyone would accept this ordinary pale lager could be anything remotely akin to an English Strong Ale. Just a bit stronger than its blue sister, it is sweet, piss ugly and watery, totally forgettable, if not for the controvesial style.

These beers are good for summers in Rangoon, the Luge, pretty standard stuff. Sweet and corny as all the others. A bit hoppier than Andaman, but honestly, nothing nearly as good as their ABC stout.

Spirulina Beer Anti-Aging Drink
Bottle, randomly across Myanmar when we could find it. The apparent ’anti-aging beer’ as promoted on the label and signs around the bars we found it in. Spirulina algae is actually brewed into the lager, wildly enough. There’s a tiny hint of it in there somewhere, but other than that it’s another Burmese lager. Decent one at that though!
