Bedele Special Beer
Ok as far as Ethiopian beers go. Had a few of these as I kept thinking theyíd bring the regular one and Iíd get another tick. Some mash malt. Crispish finish. Medium to lower tier among Ethiopian lagers.

Cloudy, very opaque. Smells and looks like a nice wheat beer. Taste is malty, with honey and toasted notes. Very good with spicy fare, as Ethiopian food usually is or can be.

Bottle in restaurant in Addis. Pale yellow, thin white head. Hints of honey and malt on the nose and in the mouth. Mild bitterness and dry finish. Not bad for an Ethiopian macro - certainly much better than the Meta Premium that preceded it!

330ml bottle poured into a random old fashioned glass at a restaurant. Hazy yellowish color with green hues and small white head. Cooked veggies aroma, with bread crust and light malt. Medicinal flavors overwhelm the low maltiness, cooked corn, low bitterness. Light body, OK texture, not interesting but manageable.

Bottle shared by drowland, huge thanks to Danny for this gem.....pours a hazy golden yellow with a very thin bubbly white head, the aroma is of grain and corn with a slight sourness to it, the flavor is of pure liquid corn with a burn of alcohol in the finish, yuck.

Slightly skunked and sweet corn and fusel aroma loaded with green apple. Sweet caramel and burnt toffee along with green apple and fusel alcohol. Ugh.

They had this one at Tana Ethiopian restaurant in Pittsburgh. +++ Sampled from an 11.2 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very dark golden-amber color with a medium sized foamy white head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was sweetish with moderate tropical fruits - papaya, mango and pineapple. The flavor was bread and honey with tart and tangy mixed tropical fruits. The finish was long and tangy with lingering honey, tropical fruits and bread. Fairly full bodied. Odd but interesting.

500ml brown bottle. Golden colour, hazy, floaties. Thin creamy ring of white foam. A bit of spotty lacing. Sweet nose, caramelly. Taste has grains, bread and caramel. Grainy finish, with a slight grassy, tangy note. Light to medium bodied, low carbonation. Was actually expecting something a lot worse, itís drinkable, on the sweet side, horrible to look at though.

Tasted from cool gold foil Belgian-style bottle at Selam Ethiopian Restaurant in St Louis, Missouri, USA into standard pint glass. Pours a bright, clear straw color with medium white foam. Typical light lager characteristics: grainy, bready, barely perceptible hops, neutral, dry finish. Not "special," but pairs alright with spicy Ethiopian food. I always prefer to try an authentic beer at ethnic restaurants; the problem is most worldwide breweries are trying to copy mass-market light lagers.

Bottle. Dull golden, slightly hazy, short-lived thin white head that actually surprisingly leaves an embroidered ring behind as it fades. Aroma is sweet grains with hints of marzipan and grass. Flavour is corny and sweet, again with marzipan notes and a slightly metallic finish. A bit of a mess, but God knows how old this beer is.

I think itís drinkable only because itís stale. After all this time (which could be years for all I know) the malts have tranformed and given it a raisen like flavor. Otherwise, gross.

Sample #1 of 4 in my African Pale Lager tasting. 330ml bottle. Pours a slightly hazy rich golden caramel color, clear, with a nice creamy sudsy frothy white head. Aroma is green apple, grass, rich caramel, sweet. Flavor is straight caramel with some grassy very metallic notes, seemingly a bit oxidized. Medium bodied, very heavy feeling, sparse sharp carbonation, somewhat flat.

Bottle. Pours hazy orange tinged gold with a bubbly white head. Aromas of citrus and grain. Near medium body with very mild carbonation. Flavor is mildly citric, and the body went watery as the carbonation left. Finishes with a nice bit of noble hop. Decent.

Bottle, served in a footed pilsner glass. Pours a hazy pale yellow with a thin white head. Smells sweet and bready with a touch of chemical. The flavor is surprisingly not completely awful. It has a sweet malty flavor that is slightly stale. The mouthfeel is surprisingly thick and somewhat cloying. It would probably be better closer to the source but as it is itís a slightly above average crappy lager.

Golden color with and off-white head. Quite malty aroma, with a light white bread toast character. Catching a bit of glue and cardboard. Quite thick in feel, and not enough zip to back it up. Initial malt flavor that is followed by a rather generic sweetness. Some herbals in the finish. Linger is dragged down by stale malt and the overall thickness, and near cloying sweetness. Not as bad as I thought it might be, but far from much of a pale lager.

Appearance: Pours a mostly clear, straw-colored body with a thin, bubbly, white head. As with the previous Ethiopian lager, you get a fine dusting of particles in the beer. Smell: Light pale malts with a meager, indistinct hint of honey butter with floral notes and a slight whiff of cider. Taste: Sweet, sugary, even honeyish malts. Faintest hint of butter. Minor floral hops, though essentially almost no bitterness present. Splash of tart apple cider. Drying, short finish. Mouthfeel: Light-bodied. Medium-low carbonation. Drinkability: As it is a guest in this country, Iíll politely tolerate it. Youíve had one lager from a third world country, youíve had them all.

Bottle thanks to dchmela, thanks Dave. Pours a clear orange color with a medium white head and some nice lacing. The aroma is pretty light; some sweet malts and honey. The flavor is nice; sweet honey dipped malts some light mineral aspects also. Easygoing and very quaffable. Not bad at all. Needless to say, my first beer from Ethiopia.
