A bit of light hop character in the front, sweet finish. Not the cleanest i guess, acceptable maltiness and easy drinking blonde.

Can’t attest to the colour or head as I’ve only ever had this from the bottle, always on a bloody hot day on Grand Cayman. But, served ice-cold, it does the job and doesn’t taste half bad. Label is pretty cool, too. Stingray’s website claims this is a wheat beer. Sure doesn’t taste like one...

From notes. What it seemed to have a lot of skunkiness to it. ’Twas almost like a home brew. It’s a shame it’s retired.

Aroma is of light caramel, nuts, roasty. Brown, clear appearance. Light sweetness, full body, creamy, average carbonation. Far superior to the Stingray Ale. Not as widely available as the regular ale on tap. On tap at Lone Star on 7 Mile Beach. Not exported.

Mild citrus aroma, light bubbly appearance, lightly bitter, medium body, thin feel with a fizzy, bitter finish. Not exported - available only in Cayman Islands. I had on tap and bottled. Tap more flavorful and less carbonated made it a more enjoyable beer.

Tap at Beach Club Colony, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. Pours an average amber with an aroma of sweet malt. Flavor is grassy hops with a slight hint of cucumber. Average mouthfeel. Not bad for a post-parasailing brew in a beautiful place with a beautiful woman (my fiancee).

This the best beer I have tried in a long time. It reminded me of great home brew. Had I known it wouldn’t be available outside of the Caymans, I would have brought back a case or two.

Hmmm... This is my first "brooding bock beer" (Do we need a third category?), so this requires some extra thought... The copper/brown body seems to be getting crushed by the Huge, fizzy off-white head. As the head subsides, an aroma of dusty caramel seeps out along with a mildly soapy yeast and some mineral water. Oddly, the effect isn’t totally unpleasant. The flavor is a soiled caramel sweetness, a drop of sour milk, a suggestion of of chocolate along with an earthy, fresh root vegetable bitterness that lasts long into the finish. I’m suprised that I’m not rating this lower but, as stated before, the effect isn’t totally unpleasant. Which causes me to brood.

Weak nose hinting of very mild caramel malt. The flavor is typical pale lager sweet corn and hints of caramel malt. Pretty predictable and boring. But at least I got a new country out of it, so sue me!

I think I would’ve enjoyed this more had I been sitting in the hot sun when I drank it. It’s got a fizzy yellow body (of course) with a large, uncontrollable, overflowing head. The aroma contains a barely perceptable sweet malt and a lemonish tartness. Tastes like a BMC with a lemon twist. More sun, please!

<font size=-4>Sampled at a The LoSBD mini-meeting, thanks to <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=32057>MrsFrankenkity and <a href=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=18655>frankenkitty. And thank you for the country!<font size=-1>

Sampled at the Beach Club in Grand Cayman. Of fairly amateurish home brew standard. Infection evident. Wouldn’t try it again unless nothing else was available on a hot day at the beach.

Here we find an immense, cream-colored head atop a slight-hazed, coppery/amber body. Aroma finds prunes & cabbage to start with dusty yeasts taking hold later. Oddly tart and malty with vegetal notes, chocolate and lemon amidst earthiness. Interesting, but it leaves an overall impression of bitter lousiness.

When I first tried this beer at Breezes on Grand Cayman, it was a hands-down diacetyl bomb. I picked up a couple singles anyway to resample at home. Here I find a light-hazed, buttery-golden beer, overcarbonated with nearly a gusher of a white head. Lemon & DMS with light smoke in the aroma and sulphur shortly after. Flavor surprises me this time around with hints of clove and lemon. This beer fluctuates widely between being not-too-bad and fairly awful.

Draft @ Bacchus (I think) on the GC Island. Poured a clear chestnut brown color with a very large light tan head. Very nice look. Nice sweet amlty aroma with a good amount of caramel, toastiness, and nutty notes. Sweet caramel malt flavor. Light fruitness and some toffee. Medium bodied. Clean finish. I liked this quite a bit although I though it was a brown ale until I went to post the rating.

Hazy amber colour. Chewy, earthy, minerally, fizzy, malty character. The malts come across a little bit oxidized and chewy. This is no beach-sipping beer but it is also no complex, rich bock either.

This beer doesn’t really leave an impression. It comes in a bottle, is consumed and then forgotten. No negatives but no positives either. No notable complexities. In a way, a great beer for sitting on the beach, which is what many caribbean breweries seem to be striving for.

Not overly Caribbean thats for sure. A bock is a nice change from the Caribbean lagers. Reddish brown with a small head. Nose of hops and caramel. Quite smooth at first and then turns to a hoppy finish. Decent beer.

Had this one on tap at the brewery in grand cayman as well. I would definetely chose the other two products of theirs over this one. Its just too light for me, i enjoyed their premium beer just as it was, i dont need a light version.

Had this one on tap at the brewery in grand cayman. it is available there now in the bottle. Has a nice deep brown color to it and a fairly large malt presence. I dug this one as i did the other. I wouldnt drink it on the beach, but i would drink it at the bar after being at the beach all day.

a bottled Cayman beer, brought back to the US. Pale lager? i suppose that’s what it has to be, but there is some character to it - a rather English ale feel (pardon the comparison), with a yeasty spicy presence that i’m not entirely willing to chalk up to cheap ingredients. lemony citrus flavors throughout the body which don’t entirely belong, but it’s not offensive - this would be very refreshing on a beach in the Caymans.

This lager pours with a small head and a cloudy yellowish color. It has a sour and quite unpleasant malty smell and flavor. It is very watery and thin-bodied. It does have a small and emphasis on small, littke kick at the end. Hey, it’s a different country and you gotta love trying new beers from new countries.

Thin and watery, this light lager’s sole saving grace was that it had a slight spike of hoppiness on its tail end (like its namesake). While still better than most American lager swill, there was an "unfinished" quality about the beer. Could be decent with some work.

My girlfriend brought this back after her cruise. Pours a hazed gold with a tall foamy white head. OK, this was to be expected. The aroma caught me off guard and did not follow the "script". The aroma was yeasty and citrusy. Nothing like I thought it would be coming from the tropics. Some bready notes as well. Taste is grains with some lemony hints. The palate is a tad bit grainy and a little tart. Finish was more yeast with grains and citrus. Not a bad beer at all and way better than expected!

Cheers to eyedrinkale for allowing this one to be cracked for the benefit of us country-hunters. Chunky blond colour. Aroma shows slight bready notes. The palate is similar, with a hint of lemon. There’s a little funky tartness in the finish. Not bad, as it overcomes its flaws to be a better example of an admittedly weak breed.

Had to try it just for the novelty aspect and it wasn’t all that bad. Color was light. Taste was light to medium bodied with hints of light citrus. Slight hop taste without the lager thing I get from most of these out-of-the-way lagers. Would I drink it again? Probably, if I ever SEE it again.

Dark amber with good carbonation. Lots of sweet malty aromas lead to an enjoyable, but not outstanding beer. Some caramel malt flavor, but not enough to balance out the bitterness. Somewhat dry, with more bitterness on the finish.

Cloudy straw color, with a few yeast particules suspended throughout the brew.Small white head that actually had a decent hang time, and left a faint lace behind.Sweet aroma with wheat and fruit maybe lemon maybe some orange peel, light on the hops and a mild spice seems to be coming through.Just what is this. The flavor is very carbonated lemony and wheat with sour side coming through now.The hops are there but they seem a bit subdued by all the sour tones. There are moments on the pallate where this doesn't seem to bad but the end is not so great being sour and lemon.I'd have to say that this is a brew worth trying atleast once but just where i would put this brew as far as where it would be good and what setting i'd have to be in for it to taste good,is hard to say. Thanks to Springslicker for sending this experience my way.

This beer is slightly hazy and a lemon yellow color. Good head but it gave off a weird hop aroma that I can't put my finger on, but it wasn't a clean pleasing aroma in any case. The flavor was also off. Hoppier than most megaswills but it isn't a good hop. Might be drinkable in the Caymans.

This beer was what I expected it to be, a pretty mellow lager that is nice in the hot sun. Slightly hoppier than most other Carribean lagers I had. It was like a very watered down APA in some ways. Kind of funky flavors in there also...a novelty.

There was a time when everyone wanted Coors because they couldn''t get it. They saw images of Golden, Colorado and those gurgling Rocky Mountain streams, and they thought, "This beer has to be good!" Little did they know it tasted like carbonated horse piss. My point is some beers are cool simply because of where they are from. Stingray is just such a beer, although it tastes considerably better than horse piss. Aaaahhhh, the Cayman Islands! One of the best weeks of my life was spent in the Caymans, and I must have consumed a keg of Stingray by myself. It is only brewed on Grand Cayman and is not exported, so it is as Caymanian as sea turtles and offshore accounts. It is refreshing, with a pleasant fruity flavor, but has a somewhat disappointing finish. Rather hoppy, which is not necessarily a bad thing. No head to speak of, and not very active, but that''s okay ''cuz when you''re coming in off of the beach or out of the water, you want something you can chug. All in all a good beer made that much better by where you have to go to get it!

If you're looking for local brews, there's little to choose from in the Cayman Islands ... five in all, two from Stingray and 4 brews from Big Daddy's. Of course, with the Caymans being part of the British Commonwealth, there's a healthy supply of decent English and Irish ales if you hit the right spot on the island As for the Stingray Dark, it's a dark lager styled beer with reminscing tones of a bock or amber ale. The dark was considerably more enjoyable than their standard "Stingray" which was a staple on draught island wide. The dark was pretty tough to find everywhere on the island, except for the brewery itself, but that is unfortuantely located mid-island (near Bodden Town) and several miles away from everything in Georgetown and Seven Mile Beach. Back to the beer... its drinkable, refreshing, and quite ejoyable, but not exactly a brew with alot of character. Having said that, when soaking up the sunshine and the high humidity, both the Dark and regular styles go down at ease and with some level of frequency. I've yet to see this beer offered anywhere else except in the Cayman Islands, unlike Jamaica's Red Stripe which has wide distribution throughout the USA. If you get the chance to head to the island, do yourself the favor and scope out the Dark just to be different. You'll be glad you did.
