Kuhnhenn Brewing Reviews

Kuhnhenn Triple Rice India Pale Ale (TRIPA) 2.7
4 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Warren, Michigan. Consumed on 4-21-16. Pours a hazy gold with cream to beige head. Thick lacing. Cereal aroma. Hoppy but surprisingly weak and unremarkable aroma. Scent of milk, verging on spoiled. Much too sweet in taste. Dry in the finish and aftertaste. Far over-the-top and unbalanced in flavor. Full body. Smooth and lively in the palate. Overall, not my thing.

Kuhnhenn Double Rice India Pale Ale (DRIPA) 3.7
Majority of 4 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Warren, Michigan. Consumed on 4-21-16. Pours a clear gold. Long-lasting effervescence elevates the appearance. Good, cream-colored head and lacing. Smells very good. Lemon and lemongrass hoppiness in the aroma. Surprisingly bitter in flavor yet has a sweet cream quality as well. Lemon and grapefruit flavors. Dry aftertaste. Medium body. Frothy in the palate. Unremarkable palate effects.

Kuhnhenn White Devil 2.8
Majority of 4 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Warren, Michigan. Consumed on 4-21-16. Pours a light gold. Mostly clear with some haze. Thick head. Urine and green grape scents. Grapey flavor; sweet white wine. Much too sweet for my tastes. Also reminds me of sake. Boozy. Full body; too filling. Overall, not my thing.

Kuhnhenn India Pale Ale (American IPA) 3.6
4 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Warren, Michigan. Consumed on 4-21-16. Pours a clear amber with beige to cream head. Nice color. Orange citric hops in the aroma. Grainy smell. The graininess works better in the flavor than the aroma. Tastes like cereal with orange slices. Medium body. Frothy in the palate. Nice palate effects. Overall, good though not great.

Kuhnhenn Simcoe Silly Ale 3.8
4 oz. pour, on tap at the brewery’s taproom in Warren, Michigan. Consumed on 4-21-16. Pours a hazy bronze with moderate to high effervescence. Thick, cream-colored head. Looks good. Pleasant, hoppy, Belgian aroma. Scents of brine and paint. Yeasty, fresh smell. Very Belgian taste but also dry. Hoppy Belgian golden ale more than a Belgian IPA. Medium body. Frothy in the palate. Good palate effects. Good beer overall. I don’t necessarily specifically sense Simcoe, which is perhaps my favorite hop.

Kuhnhenn Blueberry Eisbock 4
THANKS to Kermis for this one. 2012 Vintage. 375 ml. split between kermis, deanso, kraddel & me. Pours a super dark blueberry purple with basically no head. Nose is a mix between strong oxidation & thick blueberry syrup, lightly herbal. Taste is heavy oxidation with massive thick lightly boozy touch herbal blueberry syrup, pureed blueberry, thick herbal syrup. Clear oxidation body-wise & little in the way of oxidation syrup. This is how I imagine a 10 year old high ABV high gravity sweetened commercial blueberry lambiek would taste like. Anyway this is nice but the oxidation is a real shame, it is good but it is also clearly past it. Happy to have tried this one. P.S.: I am interested in selling my idea of high gravity super-alcoholic sweetened lambiek to AB InBev, contact me.

Kuhnhenn Salted Peanut Butter Brownie 4.3
375 ml bottle from a trade with flandersned. Thanks! The mead is a darker brown with good clarity. The aroma has strongly sweet chocolate and peanut butter. There is also a more aggressive salt character in there. The mead is actually a good bit sweeter than I would have expected, so this is definitely more of a sipping mead. Perhaps something to have as a side beverage. Thicker, chewy mouthfeel. I really enjoyed this mead, but I think the folks I shared it with were significantly less enthused by it.

Kuhnhenn Dark Heathen Triple Bock 4.6
Deep chestnut brown with a thin fast fading tan head. Amazing deep aroma with chocolate and light roast and malt syrup and Christmas warmth. Amazing smooth and roasty sweet chocolaty flavor, a wee kiss of coffee, more sweet earthy malt syrup, Christmas English ale flavors, and finishing with a bit more cocoa. Really amazing.

Kuhnhenn Fourth Dementia (4D) Old Ale 3.9
Bottle. Deep reddish-brown pour, murky, with a small head. Aroma is quite sweet, caramel and raisin, some berry notes, slightly bready. Taste is sweet up front, lots of berry notes and raisin, really flavourful and fruity. Finishes with a slight bitterness to balance and manages to not be too cloying despite a thick, oily texture and a lot of sweetness. Some coffee in the aftertaste. Amazing for the style, complex and really delicious brew.

Hazy mahogany brown color. Mildly tart, cherries lollipops, oak, caramel sweet and tart nose. Surprisingly light body slightly tart with tons of cherry lollipops, sweeter than an oude burn, but sooo well made with light body. Excellent

12 ounce bottle thanks to BlowOffTube . Pours a jet black color, this is as dark as possible. A small brown head. A big sweet bourbon and roast nose. Dark fruit. Wow, this is awesome. Brown sugar, huge dark fruit, sweet bourbon. Sugary, tobacco, tropical sweetness like from rum. Lovely. This is one hell of a surprise and a damn good BA stout. A slick thin palate. Huge but very drinkable. No heat.
