Sunshine Sunrise Project: Off Shore India Pale Lager
Poured from bottle. Strange aroma, but of malt but really canít place it exactly. A bit of vanilla. A bitter finish and a slightly sweet first taste but, as previous have said, seems confused. Enjoyable still.

Sunshine Sunrise Project: Pale Face Ale
Quite and enjoyable beer. Poured from bottle with an amber colour. Medium frothy head. Has a strong sugary aroma like something youíd put on top your ice cream. Hops hit nicely at first sip and you immediately feel pepper hit the palate however the flavour doesnít last as long as I hoped it to. Quite good but lacks a little something in the finish.

Wood, sawdust, caramel malt and burnt toast.. Taste is same with hint of spice. Simple, wet and quenching, just a little too much burnt and caramel to give a higher rating, but, as it is, itís pretty good and I wouldnít say no to another.

Sunshine Brewery Tom Thumb Session IPA
Pours a lovely reddish amber with one finger creamy white head. Aroma is English malt, herb, slight fruit bread. Taste adds a touch of pine, citrus pith, maybe some licorice and a good smooth bitterness. Light body, good quencher.

Sunshine Sunrise Project: Off Shore India Pale Lager
As the previous reviewers noted, this is a bit confused, but then, isnít "confused" the definition of an IPL? I found this to be very easy drinking, floral was dominant, then grapefruit a close second and an underlying English-ness to the malt base. This beer ainít a Spanky Spangler show pony, itís more of a plumber with a new shirt and nice shoes. Pretty good.

Sunshine Double Happy
Pours clear, reddish copper, 1 and a half finger head which settles to a skim. Nose is definitely grapefruit and English malt. Taste: brassy malt, herbs and sweetened mint, grapefruit, slight lemon and metallic at the edge. Very spicy and a bit boozy at first but this soon mellows and turns into a fairly easy drinking DIPA. Good.

Sunshine Sunrise Project: Off Shore India Pale Lager
A lot more caramel imalt in this more like a vienna lager perhaps, taste is a confusion of that malt and an uncomfortable bitterness. Not the best take on an IPL Iíve had.

Sunshine Sunrise Project: Off Shore India Pale Lager
Described as an India Pale Lager on the label - also only 6.4%. Nose is quite floral with a bit of malt underneath. On the palate I find it to like most other IPLís - confused. A bit of sour grapefruit comes through which for me is a bit of a turnoff.

For a lager this one is not that back - more sweet malts than expected give this a bit of flavour to at least make it interesting.

Sunshine Gisborne Pilsner
Grass, sweet malt, lime, and grated carrot are the order of the day for the aroma. The label mentions something about satisfying my hop cravings. Not a chance. But still, I quite enjoyed my pint of this; there is enough hopiness and carbonation and general tastiness to elevate this quite a way above your average mainstream macro urine.

Sunshine Gisborne Gold
Light malt and hops. A little grass, a touch of honey, a bit of metal and a bit of plastic. Good carbonation pushes the decent level of bitterness (decent for this kind of beer) forward a tad and tingles the tongue. Better than green-bottle macro slosh.

Sunshine Gisborne Red Ale
Pours ruby red with small off white head. Aromas of salted caramels and apples. Flavor is caramel. But with some bandaid phenols which is unfortunate. Good beer otherwise.

Nearing itís expiration date. Pours deep copper with a white head. The light aroma is of spicy hops and slightly woody. Taste is again light and decidedly malty: caramel and toast. High carbonation, light body and a short clean finish. If youíre looking for a big, hop forward pale ale, this isnít it. But if you want an easy drinker this wonít steer you wrong.

Sunshine Gisborne Pilsner
Pours crystal clear gold with a hint of red. Short lasting white head but it leaves some amount of lace to the glass. Aroma is fruity and grainy with some diacetyl. Flavor is of sweet grains (Iíd say corn, but I think this is an all barley malt beer). Sharp bitterness charicteristic of Pilsner. Of dry finish and aggressive carbonation.

Everyday drinking pilsner. Not overly hoppy or sweat tropical notes. The craft beer drinker will get bored of this very quickly - two sips and I am already thinking about my next beer...

Sunshine Gisborne Red Ale
Reddish amber with a dirty white head. Aromas of rustic autumnal NZ hops - orchard fruit, Coxís apples and ripe citrus. Flavours mild and fruity with a tinge of bittering hops/ Nothing wrong with it, but not utterly memorable.

Sunshine Gisborne Pale Ale
It does exactly what it says on the label, so a full review would be almost entirely redundant. This makes writing this a lot easier and I might add that finally, someone with the power to write copious amounts of brand-wank has actually written something useful on the beer label instead. Well done.

Sunshine Gisborne Pilsner
Clear golden yellow with a persistent sparkle and a white head that left good lace down the side of the glass. Aromas of grape and lime peel, good Sauvin-type aromas going on. Good piquant zingy citrus bitterness makes for a lingering finish that offers plenty to like.

Itís probably about time I reviewed this beer given its long standing, but you just donít get it in the South Island of New Zealand. It is as it says on the label, a golden lager that also has a white head and large bubbly carbonation. It looks like a classic lager in the glass and has a very light malt aroma and subtle metallic hopping. It isnít the most complex beer - mild maltiness and little else to commend it to beer snobs. It tasted to me like Mackís Gold used to taste prior to Lionís takeover. An aperitif beer? I bet it has never been described as that before, but thatís how and why I had it and it fit its purpose well.

Perhaps I should declare that the bottle was 2 months past expiry and it may not be a fair rating. It did have a great black look, with a nice creamy, firm head. Nice aroma of plumish stout, but the taste ruined it. Too much of a sour, bitter orange flavour. I wouldnít be surprised if anyone tol me the beer had been tainted with orange cordial and cointreau. That was it for me. If I ever have another chance, I will give it a second go.

The first sip reminded me of opening a bag of hops. Great drinker, interesting and unintrusive hop profile. Itís not trying to new a highly hoped pils, that is the greenís job. Instead it is an easy drinking yet satisfying pale lager. I would order this over a steinlager, stella or carona any day.

1.25L plastic bottle fresh from the brewery. Coppery-mahogany hue, small foamy off white mostly lasting head, good lacing. Very nice hoppy, malty, dark fruity, spicy aromas - raisin especially with some vanilla. Moderate sweetness, moderate bitterness - nice flavour. Medium body, watery to oily texture, slightly chewy, light carbonation, bitter finish of average duration. Initial impression - reminiscent of a Galbraithís ale. Very nice indeed.

500ml bottle fresh from the brewery. According to the brewer this is the same recipe as Gisborne Green (Pilsener) just with 20% more water. Strangely the Gisborne Green was more about the hops and this was more about the malt. Given the choice between the two I would always choose the the more intense aroma and flavour of the Gisborne Green. However this was OK as a beer and easily much better than your average pale lager.

2L bottle fresh from brewery. Awesome very dark black hue with dark coppery tinge, small dark caramel dense head fully diminishing, some lacing. Strong coffee, roasted/toasted/almost burnt malt, chocolate, mild tobacco light vanilla aromas - very agreeable. Moderately to strong sherry sweetness, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, oily texture, soft carbonation, long warm soft velvety finish. Not quite in the outstanding category but very nice indeed. Very drinkable.

Rigger from the brewery. Apparently (according to the brewer) Gisborne Gold with 20% less water. Vibrant clear dark gold hue, sparkling, with fine small white head mostly diminishing, excellent lacing. Beautiful very fresh strong smelling grapefruit citrus & light tropical fruit & floral hop aromas - reminiscent of Renaissance Paradox Blonde just not as strong - has to be Riwaka hops (?) yum. Moderately malty sweet moderate bitterness - well balanced to me. Well carbonated, medium body, nice long finish which is hard to define - both sweet and dry. IMO a very nice brew, fresh from the brewery makes it that extra bit special for me.

Nice perfume aroma. Good fluffy white head. Built on a sweet malt base, so much so itís more a Helles that Pilsener. Some hop notes in there which makes it more defined than anything mainstream but the true style-guide police might be feeling a little short changed.

Clear and brigh gold. Fine mouse with good stability. Overt but not excessive hop aromas with fejoa and grapefruit . Delicate malt structure displaying honey/straw notes and a slight toast background. Solid hop back bone finishing very dry, a great refresher or session beer with a bit m,ore charachter. At its price (just above domestic green bottle price) a very good buy.

Sunshine Reserve Ale
Pours amber with thin, off-white head. A malty aroma with subtle vanilla, spice, raisin and yeast. The dominant malt moves through to the flavour, where it creates a smooth, warming balance with subtle hop and the light plum, raisin and vanilla flavours. subtle yeast on the finish which coats the palate beautifully. A well-brewed mild ale and very drinakable. Top marks.

Pours black with ruby edges, tan head mostly diminishing. Coffee/chocolate aromas, quite strong vanilla tones and some weak caramel. Flavour is incredibly smooth, vanilla mingles with chocolate and toffee in the mouth. Very pleasant to drink. Burnt malt flavours come in right at the end. A very balanced, easy to drink flavourful beer.

Rigger from Regional. Pours light golden with white disappearing head. I was surprised when I first tasted this as I was expecting something on par with Speights. What I tasted was far superior. This is quite a simple beer, little aromas to speak of, perhaps some malt. I was surprised to clearly taste some nice bitter hops, with a malty background and lingering bitterness. For its price range this is the best I’ve tasted.
