Canoe Brewpub Reviews

Canoe Dark Ale (formerly Beaver Brown Ale)
Serviceable porter type ale. Very dark with a tan head. Burnt flavours are pretty much as one might expect and like all the best porters, has no flavour gap between the initial impression and the aftertaste. Yeah, OK.

Bottle. Medium orange-gold, lemon and perfumey spices. Quite perfumey actually. Not sure what to make of this. Is it a Belgian wit?

Served with an orange wedge, cloudy blond color with orange hue. Aroma and flavor are rather soapy; off-dry, with a paper feeling, and some orange peel oil.
Nothing special.

Hazy dull golden color with small head. Mild aroma, light fruitiness, traces of diacetyl. The malt flavor is nice, some cereals, rather dry, with some hop resins, and traces of diacetyl.
Nice beer with some flaws.

Canoe Red Canoe Lager
Draught at the brewpub, 4.8% ABV
Hazy deep blond color. The aroma is too mild. The flavor starts with some malt crispness, but it gets lost quickly; light residual sweetness; correct bitterness with some hay character.
Basic Lager.

Canoe Summer Honey Wheat Ale
On tap @canoebrewpub. I had this a few years ago and liked it. This time around, it didn’t quite measure up. Leans fairly sweet and boring. Sits heavier than other wheat ales -- has more of a lager quality.

On tap @canoebrewpub. I had this a few weeks back, so my impression of it is fading. But I remember it being decent. Orange amber, minimal head. Bright flavours -- fairly typical grainy wheat, zesty orange with mild doughy yeast tones.

Rouge sombre avec une petite mousse belge. L’arôme des fruits sec et sucre brun. Le goût n’est pas assez complex. Un peu de raisins sec, légèrement sucré, avec un peu d’amertume dans la finale.

Canoe Simcoe Imperial Pilsner
Jaune brumeux avec une petite mousse blanche. L’arôme typique pour le style, mais un peu plus sucré. Je dirais que le goût resemble l’arôme, mais avec un amertume pas mal intense pour un pilsner.

Canoe Red Canoe Lager

Canoe Sirens Song Pale Ale

Canoe Dark Ale (formerly Beaver Brown Ale)
August 17th, 2012 - If memory serves me right, this was a draft from a local tap house, and one close to the water. The landscape was gorgeous, and not unlike a scene from Battlestar Galactica, combining a slow flowing waterway with the modern minimalism of concrete architecture and delicately repurposed buildings, saved from decay and violence-by-wrecking ball. And the beer to give this scene a little flair was Canoe Brewpub’s Dark Ale. A fresh puff of aroma hits the nose from the beer, and a quick sip as I take in the interior of the bar hits me with a sudsy and chalky touch of hot chocolate, with a long baker’s chocolate aftertaste. The balance between the dark cocoa sugars and the hops is well done, making this a nice, satisfying drink to take in after a long day of walking around Victoria.

Canoe Amarillo India Dark Ale
On draught at the brewpub. Very Dark Brown, off-white head. Nose is powdery chocolate malt, earthy/spicy hops. Flavour is same with light coffee. No amarillo tangerine? Hoppy American brown, pretty much, very quenchable. Reminds me of Lighthouse’s fresh hop brown.

Lasting foamy golden head atop a deep reddish brown body. Nose is odd - smokey yet cantiloup. Almost lactic and creamy, some decent hop bitterness throughout the finish. Okay.

Canoe Summer Honey Wheat Ale
Tap. Pours a mostly clear yellow gold body with a tight bubbled fizzy white head. The nose is citrus fruit and wheat with some honey and light spicing. The flavor is rather light and bland with some minimal citrus and yeasty esters of clove and spice. Light lingering coriander and orange peel. Mouthfeel is light bodied and very fizzy with a lingering citrusy finish. Overall, pretty bland and boring, they’re trying to liven it up a bit by serving it with an orange slice, but it’s not doing much for me.

Canoe Galaxy ESB
Tap. Pours a clear dark reddish amber body with a small tight bubbled beige head. The nose has plenty of fresh Galaxy hops, the malt base is dry and toasty with some great tropical notes. The flavor is huge on the Galaxy, bursting with tropical fruits, especially passionfruit. Not much malt, but probably for the best when you’re trying to showcase the hops. Some toasty and husky malt on the finish after the hops fade. Very light bitterness on the finish. Light to medium bodied with soft fizzy carbonation. Pretty nice beer, a big surprise to find a good one after the first few I tried.

Canoe Dark Ale (formerly Beaver Brown Ale)
Tap. Pours a clear brown body with a small wispy light brown head that fell to a thin film. The nose is showing a bit of buttery diacetyl with the lightest chocolate and coffee notes, just lightly nutty. The flavor is pretty light on the butter, but it is there. Decent slightly sweet caramel and nutty malt, finishes with a slight metallic twang. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, a little clingy and sticky with some caramel lingering. Soft fizzy carbonation. Pretty weak attempt here as well, a little too light in the malt department and a little boring.

Canoe River Rock Bitter
Tap. Pours a clear reddish amber body with a small fizzy off-white head that faded to a thin film. The nose is very light, a slight hint of butter, some toasty and caramel malt, minimal to no bitterness. The flavor is thin and sweet with some noticeable dactyl, a big turn-off for me. The minimal hop bill doesn’t do anything to hide it either. The malt is thin and husky with a grainy finish. Mouthfeel is slightly clingy with fizzy carbonation. Pretty poor attempt as a Bitter.

Canoe Red Canoe Lager
Tap. Pours a clear pale yellow body with a small fizzy white head, tons of carbonation. The nose is just lots of corn with a bit of pale malt and minimal to no hops. The flavor is rather corn laced and very boring with minimal to no hops, not especially clean or crisp at all. Light bodied and sticky with lots of fizzy carbonation. Too much corn and residual sweetness in this one. Blah.

Canoe Galaxy ESB
Draft - All galaxy on the nose. Dark clear amber with a rich beige head. A surprising hop bomb. The Galaxy hops explode instantly and end with a lasting bitterness. Malts are present to balance and a touch of grain, but the Galaxy dominates. This will be what I drink till I can only crawl back to the hotel.

Lots of lemon citrus aromas from a slightly cloudy lemon gold coloured beer. A short off white head that leads to spice flavours with hints of honey and lemon. A short crisp finish for a nice refreshing beer. Enjoyable!

Canoe IPA
Typical hop aromas that pours a slightly cloudy golden colour. An unusually short lasting finish on the palate which doesn’t help the lack of flavour and bitterness. Not a great example of an IPA but a very drinkable beer more in the style of an English pale ale.
