Cascade Brewing Reviews

Cascade Drunken Haze 3.4
Draft at the House of Sour. Pours a cloudy medium amber with a loose and sudsy white head. Mild toasty and melon-y sweet nose. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Lightly toasted grains and some soft melon notes on the mid palate. I have to admit the commercial description for this made me drool even before I ordered it, but it ended up being quite subdued in comparison to the expectations from the description.

Cascade Spiced Cran-Apple 3.5
Draft at the House of Sour. Pours a murky medium red with a loose sudsy whitish head. Bright sweet nose, mix of berry and apple, some tartness offset by spicy sweetness. Chirstmassy for sure. Creamy medium body with moderate carb. Tart, sweet mid palate with berries and apples playing well together, with complexity up top from spices. Not bad as a summer refresher, but immediately makes me think of Christmas and holiday meals where you get a mulled cider or a fruit cobbler. This would be an interesting addition to those lists.

Cascade Grapefruit Lime 3
Draft at the House of Sour. Pours a murky pale amber with a scant sudsy whitish head. Big pithy intensely dry bitter nose. Creamy medium body with moderate carb. Pithy, dry, acetic, bitter mid palate. Way too far over into bitterness and quite out of balance. Needs to blend back into a beer thatís too sweet and needs balance from the dry/bitter side; just on its own this tastes like a concentrated thread for another bigger batch of beer.

Cascade Sloe-ji Berry 3.8
Draft at the House of Sour. Pours a cloudy dark maroon with a loose and sudsy, very faintly pink head. Bright tangy acidic nose, lots of different red pitted tree fruit notes and bright acid all running around and around. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Moderately oily body, nicely acidic bite. Sharp attacking acidic fruit tartness from the first sip to the last aftertaste. Wonderful intense sourness and great blended fruit flavors throughout--berries, pomegranate, soft lemon in the back, sweeter vinegars. Wish I could come back to it again and again.

Cascade LíOrange Du Jour 3.7
Out of a live barrel at the House of Sour. Pours a cloudy medium golden orange with a loose and sudsy whitish head. Bit tangy fresh orange juice on the nose. Creamy medium body with moderate carb. Fresh orange juice flavor all over the mid palate. Tastes pretty much like a glass of good fruit juice. Mild ferment character playing against the fruit, but the citrus is the star of the show without a doubt. Long tangy finish.

Cascade Bump íN Rind 3.8
Draft at the House of Sour. Pours a cloudy pink with a sudsy whitish head. Big tangy fruit nose, smells like freshly sliced very ripe watermelon. Light tanginess from the wheat and ferment in the background. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Mid palate is a perfect combination of fresh fruit with light summery grassiness and a bit of soft tartness--makes you feel like youíre sitting out in a field eating watermelon. Delicious. I believe the server said this is one of the first long-treatment-type releases from a newer guy in the brewhouse, and this serves very well as a sign of more good things.

Cascade Vlad the Imp Aler 3.9
750 ml bottle shared with Tmoney99 and the MadTree crew. Pours a hazy amber brown color with a small off white head. The aroma and flavor have big tart fruit, caramel, acidic character, apple vinegar, wood, bourbon, the sweet/sour/acidity really works with this, but the 10.6% creates warmth, solid.

Cascade Apricot Ale 4.1
Draft at Bru Craft. Bottom of a keg first tapped at a Cascade event last week. Murky golden orange pour. Just a very thin fizzy white ring. Huge overripe apricot flavor. Very sharply sour (as expected) but much fuller than the bottle. Juicy. Piquant. Gigantic. Notes of bruised peaches, fresh cut hardwood, green apple sour candy, figs, kiwi and thistles. Fantastic!!!

Bottle shared courtesy of Mark-sama (you rock!). 5 year aged. Lovely heady nose, wine texture, loads of tangerine, marmalade with a tart edge, followed by deep and complex notes of spiced rum, oak, apricot, more tart on the finish. Definitely up their with top-notch vintage wines, now I get why that brewery is so special.

Cascade Tangerine Dream NW 4.4
Bottle. 2011 batch. Spicy nose, oranges, rum, a bit of vinegar. Huge, complex, lovely. Flavor of tangerines, biscuits, chocolate, wine, spicy. Rum notes are amazing. Great fruit depths. Wow, this is lovely stuff. Has aged very well and seems better than people have found it in the past. Much less sour than the typical Casade, and so balanced and complex.

Cascade Manhattan NW 3.8
Shared 750 ml. bottle poured to shifters, displaying a hazed, copper color, with a modest layer of soft white, bubbly head foam that reduced to a persistent, small bubbled film, and light spots of lacing. The nose was expressive cherry that was dry, extremely tart, and nearly sour. A bit less than medium bodied, with moderate carbonation that assisted, but was mainly blanketed by the tartness, the taste was cherry & sour as the aroma, with some tannic astringency, a touch of sweetness that was slightly mellowing, but no perceptible bourbon to complete the Manhattan theme. Puckering, and very tasty, nonetheless.

Cascade Strawberry 3.9
Bottle. Little Leeds Beer House. Bit of drama on opening. Hazy, gingery, pinky orange. Thin, fairly dense, lasting, white head. Nose has Strawberry Mivvi ice lolly. Get the oak, in spades, and the vanilla. Missus canít bear this one, getting plastic and UHT milk. Anyhow, I donít. Taste is light sweet. Nicely tart, and light dry. Foamy mouthfeel. Some acidity. Dried out toward the end, with the vanilla, oaky sweetness lingering on the lips. Nice one.

Cascade Blueberry 3.8
750ml bottle for $25. Good beer, understand the craft, wine kinda, but for the price point, I have had better beers in this style. With that said, I did enjoy this offering. Purple pour, with zero head and lacing. I pick up the funk, blueberries, cob webs, white wine barrels, and malt. Taste is tart, funk, sour, fruity funk and dryness. No detection of alcohol. Good, not great.
