Panil Birra Artigianale - Birrificio Torrechiara Reviews

Panil Brune 3.3
750ml bottle. Cloudy chestnut colour with average to huge, frothy, slowly osteoporosing, minimally lacing, off-white head. Concentrated fruity aroma, gooseberry jam, some rhubarb, white grapes, disguised, minimally chocolatey, malty background with a touch of coffee. Taste is chocolately dark malty, notes of coffee, slightly vinous, fruity overtones with notes of gooseberry, white grapes, minimally tart, slightly bitter finish. A bit unbalanced and inhomogeneous, nevertheless a nice, though not fully working combination of flavours.

Draft at Slow Boat. This is a cool spot. Deep dark reddish pour. Small head, some lacing. Oak, leather, well-balanced balsamic tartness and malty, lightly sweet backing. After acclimating over the first few sips, this just gets more and more delicious.

Panil Brune 0.5
Bevuta come "Agreste riserva" 75 cl. Bottiglia avariata?

Panil Raphael 3.1
New Beer Distributors, NYc 750ml: pours light brownish with a white head. Aroma is a lot of wood and cherries and some vinegar. Taste is rather sou. Not really all that sweet. Seems a bit unbalanced to me, as if it does not really know where to go with itself. Plenty sour aftertaste. Not a huge fan.

Panil Divina (Barrel Aged) 4
750 ml bottle
The second member of a world class flight compared well to the previous Raphael. Taking the sour experience in a different direction, it demonstrated why Panil is one of the only Italian breweries I am willing to pull the trigger on. Give it a shot if you somehow exhaust the Belgian list of unblended lambics or just want something different.

Aroma / Appearance - A bronze semitransparent base rests below an ivory head. Sheer legs release waves of sharp blue cheese, vinegar, and acid. Funky and bright, it has a residual aroma of caramel.

Flavor / Palate - A fluid caramel base binds together honey and ranch dressing. Oak, sour cream, vanilla, and malt vinegar work together in a way that defies all logic. The profile of this particular lambic sets it apart; rather than trying to imitate its kin from further north it carves out a unique niche.

Panil Raphael 4.2
750 ml bottle
The capstone to Cleveland Beer Week included an opportunity to try this gem which is one of the only things out of Italy that seems to survive the trip to the United States well. From start to finish the profile sparkles with a sour note that set the tone for the flight to come.

Aroma / Appearance - A golden rosy body shimmers with light underneath a thin whitish veneer. Musty dog, vinegar, oak, and dried lemon peels tease at the sour contents within.

Flavor / Palate - Tart dried figs, lemons, and the taste of musty books slowly decaying on shelves scour clean the palate. A cheesy finish offers hints of what direction this beer might head with more aging. Five ounces was enough to whet the appetite; depending on the cost perhaps I’d spring for a bottle as a special treat every once in a while.

Panil Raphael 3.9
Bottle sample at Iron Gate. Almost a gusher, but not quite. Clear golden color, massive white head. Aroma has dusty cobwebs, light tannins, rotten overripe cherries. Taste is profoundly earthy, dank, sweaty, dirty, dusty cherries and vanilla. Not for the faint of heart.

Panil Raphael 3.1
Bottle @ BVery’s. Really fizzy medium gold pour with a modest head. Nose is pretty oaky. Some butterscotch candies and a big of buggy tartness. Flavor is or candied apples, caramelized autumn fruits. Somewhat earthy, dirty. Lightly sour on the finish. Medium body. OK.

Panil Divina 3.5
Enjoyed at a tasting hosted by Brian on October 22. Thanks for the post-birthday hosting man! Poured from a 375 mL bottle shared by Brian. Thanks man! Vintage 2007. The pour on this is a little different. It’s a clear-ish golden amber color with some soapy bubbles that account for the white head. There is no lace as they burst and leave only a ring of collar. The aroma is something else. It carries a nuttiness and strong citrus tendencies, without being too overly sour. There is a little bit of a cleaner to it as well. It does smell a touch oxidized and like it might be past its prime. The flavor doesn’t do too much to dispel these. There is a pretty decent grape presence and then moves to a sweetness. This is not at all what I was expecting. There is a little spice and some oak, with what does taste like cardboard. Obviously oxidized at this point. The mouth feel is heavier and syrupy with a very light carbonation and a lingeringly sweet, lightly citrus finish. This probably needed to be consumed a year or two ago.

New Beer Distributors, NYC bottle: Pours reddish with a very small loose head. Aroma is vinegar, wine, wood, sugar, and some fruitiness. Taste is moderately sour. Carbonation is very light. Sourness maximizes around the finish and libgers on to the aftertaste. Veey drinkable while also being a little intense. Glad to finally have this beer.

Panil Divina 3.3
New Beer Distributors, NYC bottle ($17): pours orange with a bubbly white head. Aroma is vinegar, funk, sugar, and basements. Taste is sour. Carbonation is not that heavy. Aftertaste is sour and thinking about it makes your mouth pucker out just a bit. Low sweetness. Pretty nice. Not mindblowing. Glad to finally get to 77.

Panil Raphael 3.7
I have liked Panil for a long time, especially after finding several beers from them in Florence that I have not seen at home before or since. Light brown color. Very well carbonated, which more and more I think European brewers are getting right. A bit like a saison. Not very strong flavors, and not particularly sour, but there is yeast, mild sourness, and an earthy quality that I enjoyed an found refreshing. The carbonation helps this beer considerably.

Old bottle of US made sour. Pours a reddish brown hue with no head or lacing. The aroma is almost a vinegar with cherries and blackberries. The taste is tart cherries and mulberries with a muted sourness. Was expecting more sour. Somewhat acidic. It was fine but was just expecting a little more.
